Raptor 660 Valve Adjustment Guide

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Quick and easy video on how to do the valve adjustment on a Raptor 660, the steps are the same for every 660 from 2001-2005. The engine MUST be cold when adjusting and the engine at the same TDC (compression stroke) when adjusting the intake and exhaust valve.
Have any questions? Ask below and I'll do my best to answer them!

    Hi, straight to the point instructions. I've watched your videos before but never worked on the same machines. I've got a 2003 Grizzly 660 with the same setup. Three intake and two exhaust. I had to replace the head because the last owner never had any service done to the cooling system. My issue is that the tappets seem to keep moving away instead of tightening up since the exhaust and the intake share the same lifter. My service manual doesn't explain this and not really any video will explain this either. Hope I'm not confusing you or anyone else who reads this and can reply back to me. thanks

    Every system is different, some tappets tighten up with use and some loosen, mine tend to tighten up and close off the clearance. As long as you check your valves every 5 or so long rides you should be fine, if its loosening up well before that and/or making noise, it might not be a bad idea to put some blue loctite on it and torque it to spec next time.

I have an 05 660 that cut off on me, I took the plug out and the electrode was broken off, and I can only turn the crankshaft about 180 both ways with a socket till it comes against. I mean any engine will have unburnt fuel come out the exhaust when deaccelerating, you'll just hear them better with an open exhaust lol but yes, your valves could be tight and too open allowing more fuel to go out the exhaust than normal

  • @Hunters_Mechanics

    @Hunters_Mechanics

    3 жыл бұрын

    To bleed the system, you just open the radiator cap and run the ATV until you see the coolant boiling. It's a good idea to have several rags around the cap just in case it bubbles out. The thermostat sits underneath the radiator and is mounted to the frame there

    Question my quad turned off with in 5 minutes. At first I thought it was the break cable since all the symptoms were similar to those issues. They I started taking it apart and I noticed that the valves got loose. I re adjusted the valves and the quad worked good for around 5 minutes and now I believe that the clearance moved again. Do you have any tip of what could be causing this issue?

    Hey boss, I manage to run my quad for a while, but in around 2 hours of riding it overheat. I know there could be a lot of reason that it overheat but other then the coolent what other reasons could cause this. I rebuild the water pump, I got a new thermostat, I cleaned the radiator and didn't see no leakage, radiator fan works. Could the valves not been on spec cause this or maybe my oil pump, or not clutch properly. This is my first quad.

  • @Hunters_Mechanics

    @Hunters_Mechanics

    What did it do by "overheating"? If your coolant flow is good, you shouldn't really have an over heating issue. It is a possibility you're not getting good oil flow, have you done the oil pressure check with the small bolt on the side of head/valve cover? Holding the choke would just allow more fuel flow but shouldn't cause a dramatic overheating

    The carb is new from Amazon. I think it came out defected. In the heating issue I am thinking it could have something to do with the oil. I checked the coolant when the quad cool down and it was fine, but the oil box seems to be empty but I don't think it leak all the oil. I only see it leak from the crank breather hose. I am thinking that the oil pump is not pumping and that the oil is staying in the bottom and when the crankshaft moves that's when it leaks oil. Thanks for replying
