2001-2005 Yamaha Raptor 660R carburetor cleaning

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey everyone, this video is of a 2002 Yamaha Raptor 660R carburetor cleaning. This bike had been sitting and would not start properly. Typical symptom of a dirty/varnished carburetor is the bike or ATV will only run on “choke”. Completely cleaned the carburetors and drained/flushed the tank. This will apply to the Yamaha Raptor 660R from 2001-2005 which were the years of production. Yamaha calls this ATV a YFM660RP. Thanks for watching and I hope this video helped you in some way.

Just gotta say thank you! Saved myself $500 each, cause that’s what Yamaha wanted to charge for a carb inspection and cleaning. 2 Quads (660R) were sitting for two years… followed this video and the damn thing fired up and idled like it was brand new!! Cheers from Cali and the Pismo dunes.

I got the chance to clean up my uncle's raptor 660r and this video helped so much. This is the first time I'm getting into projects like this. The quad sat for 7 years so I thought the carb would need cleaned and just like that one the right side slider was sticking.

  • @OTRVM

I would have to agree with that thought. Those are generally overflow tubes. If the float gets stuck inside of the carburetor then the fuel will not stop entering the bowl. The fuel needs to go somewhere. Out the overflow tubes is one way. But if the fuel is flowing at a high rate it can also overflow into the intake both the air box and the intake side of the carburetors on the engine side.

Ok overall was a really good video but I just have to point out you missed the bolt under the grill in the front I didn’t see you clear the gas line or the inlet to the carb before reinstalling the carb and also the rubber diaphragms are no good now because they got soaked in carb cleaner and will break down a lot faster now but other then that it’s all pretty good and the thing ran great good job I’m going to do mine tonight when I get home

I saw some videos who guys have already made that adapt (but just on Europe). As xt600 use carbs where 2nd stage works per vacuum, how its the mechanical process of 2nd stage of that raptor carb? Make sense that adaptation ?

Good evening. I apologize for the delay. After reviewing the video, manual, and DynoJet Jet kit installation instructions. With this particular setup which is a KN filter and pipe you would run the mixture screw in just until it seated. *Do not crank it down* Then back it our 3 turns. With less tuning such as maybe only a filter and no pipe you could go 2.25-2.5 turns out if you even have access to the screws. I hope this helped.

Although it only has 20 reviews, overall it’s 4.5 stars and for what it’s worth, it’s the “Amazon’s Choice” for the ‘01-‘05 raptor. I have a mint ‘03, a mint ‘05, and an ‘05 roller I use for parts. I only needed 1 oddball piece that I couldn’t find anywhere. I kept the stock carb on the machine and will now use the new carb for parts. Thorough cleaning/rebuild and she’s alive and ‘rippin!!! Front tires still want to lift off the ground in 4th gear. Not gonna lie-nearly shit myself on the first test run after the rebuild. @@DAREDEVIL503 Sounds like you solved your fuel dumping problem from the original post. Do you have any mods and if so is it jetted properly? Is it popping/backfiring? When you say starving, is it for fuel or air? Are the adjustment screws and floats adjusted properly? Did you check the spark plug to see if it's burning lean "white" or rich "dark brown to black and or wet". A new plug would be recommended for checking that with some time riding. Is the issue at idle, mid-range, wide open throttle? I recommend you pick up a haynes or clymer service manual, they're around $30 and walk you through all aspects of the machine step by step with pictures too.

You should remove the vacuum diaphragms before spraying carb cleaner anywhere. It destroys them. If the slides are stuck use WD40, it won't dissolve the diaphragm. Not to mention the air cut valve, which is a pain to remove. And pretty much always replace the bowl gaskets!
