Tip for any oil change... cut open flat rubble sack (ie a big black bin bag), place under the engine area, put something heavy at each corner to stop it blowing about, then you drain your oil into the basin and avoid having a black puddle on your driveway which would result in divorce for most of us.

On modern injection engines you can hold open the throttle and press the starter and this will just rotate the engine. Probably to clear a flooding. Check the owners manual to see if this is supported.

In both your recent oil change vid's didn't see, nor did you say anything about using a crush or sealing washer on the drain plug. My bike (Triumph Bonneville) uses one for the drain plug, as do all the cars I've ever owned. Do you bikes not use them or is that just your philosophy?

Maybe a 6 year old vid though it confirms the hassle! having to remove the pipes just to get to the plug lol, picked mine up last August and with the MOT coming up now in may I've been getting it sorted bit by bit, what year is/was yours? Noticed an oil leak coming from around the filter on mine earlier on and luckily already have the oil and a new filter to go on, just hoping on some dry weather over the weekend to get it sorted.

Hey Matt, I have a question for you. All my bikes have the sump plug on the side of the sidestand. When I drain my oil, I put it on the sidestand so oil can drip out nicely, it's the lowest point of the sump so it flows nicely. I do shake it around a bit at the end to get everything out (yeah not everything I know). I noticed in the video you keep your bike upright. Is the plug on the lowest point on the yamaha? Like with cars? thanks

Usually yes, sometime they don't look like they are but internally the casting has 'canals' that stream the oil to the plug, like the ER5

A guy working for my dealer tried to fuck me over by not changing oil filter on my first 1000km service (brand new bike). Luckily I am a bastard so I scratched/marked the old filter prior to the service and when I was to take the bike back I pointed at the scratch mark and demanded an oil filter change as well (they charged me for it on the bill). They did it in front of me together with another oil change. Turns out the guy was stealing from them as well, putting parts he never replaced in his pocket and selling them later "under the counter". He is no longer working for that dealer (and for no one else for that matter, the word gets around really quick). Really stupid move on his behalf, to lose a good job for less than 10 euro...go figure...

The Bikes came stock with a 4 into 2 system and the 4-1 one block the oil drain bolt so its impossible with most after market 4-1 I've been trying to research if any of the 4-1 actually clear the drain bolt but so far have not found a brand that does.

Yer but my Exhaust is a 20 year old Nexxus shite pipe its a bastard to get off and even more of a bastard to refit. It leaks from the connections every more and more each removal and refit really just weighing up my options for a replacement and this video has helped me make the decision to go back to a 4-2.

Before I put the filter on, I pour some oil in the centre of the filter for it to soak up, so it's not a completely empty cavity of air to go back into the engine

  • @dirtygarageguy

There will be some oil in the engine, the fill level will be enough for the syphon. It's just a filter. I wouldn't bother filling it. You risk putting crap in it.
