So how about Chromecast, Android TV, Google assistant, Online TV and huge variety of apps in one single, well built and stylish looking device? Say hello to the Mi Box S and … let’s talk about the top 5 reasons to buy it.
Diving right to the first and - supposedly most important reason to go for a Mi Box: using a streaming device is among the cheapest ways to make your TV smart or smarter than what it is, and make that based on an open-source and well maintained by Google operating system.
Mi Box s arrives at slightly lower price than its predecessor, which is another good sign. While Xiaomi do not disclose this officially - it is powered by the S905X processor - widely used with many TVBoxes, but is unfortunately not the latest and greatest from the Amlogic product line; The box is equipped with 2GB DDR3 ram, 8GB storage, and arrives with Android TV 8.1 out of the box.
The TVbox is a very slight upgrade to the predecessor - Mi Box 3, so if you have that one, likely the Mi Box S won’t really strike you with performance upgrades.
Second top reason to go for Mi Box S is the Android TV OS - meaning that it is stock image of Google’s Android system, which is certified by Google. You don’t have to worry about shady apps, unknown services, bloatware or whatsoever. It is arriving with version 8.1 out of the box, a nice step up compared to the competition.
The settings menu is well organized - and is aligned according to Android TV standards, giving you control over the entire operating system. You can adjust WiFi settings, the display and sound, add Bluetooth devices and so on. Everything is well understandable and grouped in a way that makes sense.
Adding a Bluetooth Gamepad worked just fine withing a few seconds, event hough we talk about a quite old model.
Using USB devices is quite easy too, and unlike the Amazon Fire TV stick, using external media with the Mi Box S is quite well working! The device is good even for gaming - not as powerful as the nvidia shield TV - but still good enough for games like Asphalt, Real racing, even PUBG.
Being Google certified leads us to the third major point of interest - content streaming in Full HD and UHD ; HD streaming of Netflix, for instance. KZread is also well presented with video resolutions of up to 4K.
The other outstanding feature to highlight - voice control: there is a dedicated button launching Google Assistant - instead of typing long names and titles with this not so convenient software keyboard - just say them and they will show right away.
Number 5 - Google Chromecast which is embedded. Extremely convenient and useful - and one of the big differences between this TV box and the non-certified android devices. Videos, photos - this is a very quick, good working and reliable way to share content on your TV and make it visible for everyone in the room.
If you need a cute, stylish and capable device to stream KZread, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video - it is perfect and in my opinion is a better choice than most of the other google certified TV boxes. If you have the Mi Box 3 - keep it and carry on using it. If you don’t care about android TV, and all you need is Android’s full power unleashed - as it is on your smartphone for instance - get a Chinese TVbox with the latest generation processor.

how's the box after 8months now ?
Great box for a low price. Just installed android 9 on it and it runs even better now. My disadvantage is the lack of an extra usb port. I ordered a usb splitter box with 3 ports and i will let you know if that will work with my airmouse and usb stick. One other point is the choice of the default launcher, i am using sideload channel launcher 2 now in witch you can custimise everything including your background. It would be nice to set that as the default launcher. For the rest only positive. There are also apk files you can sideload on it. One of my reccomandations is CX File explorer. Runs very fast on the box and you can easily set up an account in the cloud with the webdav protocol. CX can also do a cleaning performance of large unnessacery files and cache files. The box also reconizes a usb stick of 64 gb so the storage of only 8 gb isn't a problem anymore.

What is 8GB enough for? Can you download apps on added USB stick? Normally apps can only be launched from main hard drive..

having a USB splitter without it being powered externally will limit your USB connectivity due to voltage issues, always use a USB port splitter with is powered externally.

Never had any problems with power issues. And yes, apps can be stored on the USB drive if you define it as internal memory instead of external memory. In the meanwhile this box is used for pure streaming in the living room, I have another box now with more memory and storage.

A disadvantage (since you asked) : No ethernet port. Whether or not that is a disadvantage is practice I don't know. But it seems to me that it would be a good thing to have a rock solid, works every time, all the time, bandwidth to burn, connection to complement WiFi. I am interested in comments because that is the only thing putting me off getting one of these.

It can be done with a cost.First usb splitter then Add a usb to ethernet adapter .Some even mention their internet speed has increased.

Hi Angelos, yes, you can connect a combo (haven't tested this model in particular, but most of them work without any troubles). And this will of course consume your only available USB port.

Will it play 4K, 10 Bit, HDR10...all that jazz from the flash drive or portable external drive and do flash drives need to be FAT format? I generally reformat my flash drives to NTFS because of the file size limitations of exFat and/or Fat32. Obviously full UHD movie files are going to be greater than 4.32 gb so the drive has to be NTFS format. I have a 4K Firetv and it won’t read NTFS formatted drives. I hope all of what I said makes sense to you all. It sounds correct in my head. Lol

The Mi Box has certified ANdroid TV - better for Netflix as it supports it in HD. The N5 Nova is closer to stock Android.

when you playing forward or backwards on youtube, a loud sound will be heard when it starts playing. even when the sound is switched off. I read that the box 3 also suffered from this

yes, but only if you use kodi player (go to system settings & change settings level to expert from the bottom left > audio output > enable passthrough and choose the formats that your sound system supports) it even has the ability change every multichannel format to dd 5.1 if you system supports that only (kodi is a truly capable player)

Great Reviews . Which are the 5.1 surround audio formats compatible with this unit via HDMI out while USB movie playback ? Does it support EAC3-5.1 , DTS 5.1 ,Dolby Digital 5.1 which are commonly seen in torrent downloaded movie clips ?

This is the best Certified Android Box so far after NVIDIA Shield. If you can afford then surely go for NVIDIA otherwise this is still the best pick. Yes, It is low on RAM and ROM. But apart from those it has something in it called DRM L1 license which you won't find in other brands. Those who are looking to play PUBG on this box can look for other boxes. But if you want to experience heavenly AV quality over Netflix,youtube other streaming options then this box is just for you. This box will get regular OTAs whenever it is available. CONS : This box lacks Ethernet port. There should be at least 2 USB ports in the box one of which should be of usb3.0 compatible. Front notification light on the box is too faint, I can hardly see it glowing.

I want to use ethernet port and some 2 or 3 USB which comes along with USB hub. Some people using OGreen model but it's slight expensive when compared the same features having on TP-Link it was cheaper. Can I go for it? I completely wanted to use it for Mi TV Box and Firestick.

As long as there's HDMI input - you will be fine.
I saw your video and bought one, to test it myself. For me it was a disappointment because it does not work well with 4K resolution as advertised. I like the idea but it is not an alternative to a Chromecast Ultra, unfortunately.

Can you explain what's the issue? I'm interested in this for 4k streaming and need to know before I purchase..
I have a mi box3.The most benifit is- i have bought a "sony ps4 controller" & i can connect to my box. Now i cam play game on my tv like Asphalt-8,Dead trigger-2 & more.

Have you tried playing Fortnite? It works? How did you connect the ps4 controller(with usb cable/by bluetooth/by wireless)?

If with 3GB RAM / 32GB storage would be good. If with 4GB RAM / 64GB storage would be ideal. Just go ahead and price it higher.

@@frdagzd I use a hard drive but it would be nice if the storage inside was more. I bought a new one it has an ad card slot that helps a lot
I think the 4k fire stick is better if u have it hook up right.

@@TechMishka my favorite personal is the shield but I'm a box seller as the fire sticks I do really well them selling them. The wifi chips on the Amazon devices are really good.

It has Android so no need for bluestacks. And mobdro is an android APK so it'll also work

It looks like an IPTV dedicated box which gives you the advantage of watching IPTV content with better quality than what you can get on the Mi Box S. A lot of positive reviews out there.

Tech4All @Tech4All I believe the Formuler Z8 does not run Android TV OS. It runs on plain Android and is not Google certified. Therefore you cannot run Netflix unless you can find a version to sideload and most certainly will not run Netflix HD or Netflix 4K. Also because it does not run certified Android TV it does not support built in chromecast.
Just buy a nVidia shield. Everything else is just a waste of money. Mibox's suffer from audio and video sync issues if you have a receiver or soundbar hooked up. The shield allows you to sync it system wide through the settings. People say the mibox is 2nd to the Shield. Sure it is but it has been lapped 10 times.

This is not a cheap 'TV box' ....and with 2gb+8gb, come on dude.......really ! For around the same money, and 4gb+64gb the A95X Max wins hands down and is far more reliable.

Most likely it is; Don't forget that some of the certifications cost money, and this is why we get mediocre hardware. But yeah - I am also sticking to other kind of TV boxes.

A95X has only 1GB RAM and 8GB storgae in Sweden anyway....and only Android 7.1...
Chromecast or screen mirroring doesn't work properly at all. Otherwise its a great android tv box for the price. Almost every app or games work properly enough.

@@umersalman1 No bro i tried with Xiaomi, Samsung and Motorola too. But it didn't worked properly. I mean to say it does connect with all of them but not as as smooth as it should there is lot of lag and unresponsive behaviour.

4k streaming Netflix is the only reason to buy this box as the specs are poor and the 8gig memory is almost unusable if you want to use kodi and streaming apks.

Hey Freddy - it can work fine, however adding an external drive has to happen through the menu in Android. Kind of restrictive in that sense.

My shield fucking sucked had pro version and USB stick 3.0 don't know if it was a dud or what apps where playing by them self , sideloading things sucked stopped working in 5 months was lucky bb let me get refund

@@ALIENSInGAMES Correct and it's also the most powerful device that can play games, stream games from a PC and play video and audio files from a USB drive attached to it. The fire stick is the best pure streaming device for much cheaper so if you want the extra power and features of the shield, you have to pay more.
This box is nothing but hype and bordering deceptive advertising. The Android TV system forces you to sideload anything that might be worth putting on this box. And not even allowing a working browser?!?!? How are we supposed to search from their parent company Google? Next up is the Atmos that they advertise. It works... IF you have your own files that you can play. It does not Stream anything in Atmos. There are only 3 services in the US that do. And NONE of them work with Atmos on this box.The Vudu app only works at 1080P, therefore Atmos will not even work on that app, either. For a box with this little memory you should be paying no more than $30-35. 4K works... with Google and KZread. I sideloaded Amazon Prime, and this box can't handle 4K from them. It sounded like, and I was really hoping, that this would be the one and only box that I would need. But this one falls WAY short.

It mostly depends on whether you need it Google certified or not - because if it is not, then there will be no Netflix HD and Amazon Prime video in HD. If that is not an issue - you can check some of the no-name chinese TVboxes with more RAM and good CPU. Most of them are just fine.

If you need external drive - better get a device with regular Android. In order to use an external HDD - you need to add it via the Mi Box Settings.

i think it does (but im not 100% certain). and i would advise you to use kodi (it can browse your media files without the need to install a file explorer app, and it has better codec support & audio passthrough), vlc on android is not that good.
