It's kind of amazing how compelling the Xenonauts air combat is. While in XCOM 2 and Phoenix Point it's a massive snoozefest.

man, no wonder I was getting absolutely destroyed - I wasn't using any of the dodge rolls or afterburners or the like! I came in from nu-XCOM, so the air-combat is new to me.

It is nice to see how air battles work, as the Let's Play I just watched by Janet on Occasion, always autoresolved and he otherwise faffed about with aircraft weapons without even trying to learn the nuances of it. So, again, it is nice to see interceptors actually be able to go through engagements without ending in a humourous repair state that is 3x as long as the construction time otherwise was in his game.

Thanks for the video. I’ve had the EA game a few days now but I’ve auto resolved all of the air combat, but at the moment I only have one base with 3 Angels. This gave me some useful tips. 👍🏻

Thanks this was very informative. The air combat literally makes or breaks your ability to survive late game especially with income. Sadly I may have learnt this too late as I reached a point around day 130 where the UFOs suddenly all changed to abductors and fighters and since I wasn't struggling with the early game scouts and observers I didn't have laser guns or upgraded missiles on my angel's just got stuck with not being able defeat UFOs which had major effects on my game due to income decrease from panic and lack of bounties and also lowed my development of gear cause I couldn't get alien alloys (eventually leading to me losing the soviet union).

I would like to see a video on how to deal with late UFOs, They are destroying me. They out range me and i cant find a way to defeat them

The only UFO I didn't show is the bomber and abductor and I did show you use torpedo's RTB then use more torpedo's for the "Safe" way to do it. Past that laser cannons and dodge.

AFAIK there's a passive HP regen on UFOs that makes the repeated attacks less effective - but what I found works for me against bombers, is sending a flight of Angels with torpedoes closely followed by a flight of Phantoms. Angels put their torpedoes in, disengage, then Phantoms come in and finish the job
Accelerated Gun isn't exactly trash considering it has better DPS against targets with no armor it can be used for dedicated anti fighter aircrafts or as a backup gun..... but yeah the additional range that the laser lances give is just tooo good to pass up.
I've been playing XCOM and Xenonauts for years and I can count on 14 fingers the number of times I've actually run air combat. Almost always auto resolve. Great video.
Gatling gauss has 8 times the dps of a laser and decent armor destruction. It shreds targets at short range. Unfortunately to get it - producing accel cannon is a requirement.

I got the coilguns for my snipers and Machineguns, thinking they'd be great for burst damage. They, uh... don't seem better. Honestly, why do Snipers... exist? They can only shoot once per turn, period, and even when they hit they do no more damage than a Rifle. Some balancing seems necessary.

Theoretically snipers work on long range maps with buildings that have multiple stories. Or when they can start flying. however RN in the game snipers are just OK on some maps and trash on others. Machine gunners just suppress the enemy that's about it.
Do you buy the 2nd teir aircraft? Or just skip it and wait for the 3rd tier like how most people skip magnetic weapons and just buying lasers? When decommissioning aircraft youre supposed to get money back but you dont, at least in my game theres no refund on aircraft so im trying to decide should i buy the 2nd tier or just wait and buy the 3rd? Or is there only 2 tiers?

Right now Ingame theirs is no third tier aircraft so just buy the tier 2.
shooting missiles at the target from the flank/Side negates the roll ability ^^ unless they have boost too in X2
How similar is the game to the original X-coms? It feels like a remake, but i expect they changed a fair few things.

Pretty similar to the OG Xcom with changes and upgrades. Ex air combat and the base management is easier and less tedious no more buying magazines and clips or grenades you just have unlimited.

equipping your soldiers according to a scheme (youre an assault soldier, and youre a sniper), which equips them with all the stuff you designated for that role - is probably the most impactful QoL change ive experienced so far, with "trail until over land" feature a close second, plus the main characters (commander, scientist, ..) existing and talking is a bit of a bonus to atmosphere
this much harder looking than xcom that all ground tact strats

Veteran Difficulty.
Nope, nope, nope, that is not how to deal with fighters while you are carrying missiles. What you need to do is fire your missiles into their SIDES. Rolls are 90 degrees left or right, so if you launched it at right angles to the enemy fighter, both missiles would go in. What you are supposed to do is accelerate one fighter to act as a decoy at an angle away from the enemy. They'll turn to follow the closest fighter, so let your missile fighter lag behind a bit until the enemy commits to a right angle flight path away from it, then fire the missiles. They would try to roll but at 90 degrees, the only options are to roll into the missile or roll away from the missile, which would give it time to course correct and still hit.
So it's yet another feature that's both technically and graphically almost exactly the same as in Xenonauts 1 from 9 years ago? That's great news.

wait why arent there any battleships carriers or cruisers? coming later or something? that sucks man... such a major component :(.. god this game took forever to make for some reason
