X-Carve Clamp - Design, Cut & Inlay

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I needed some low profile clamps for the X-Carve so I quickly threw this video together showing how I did it.
And why not get some inlay practice while I'm at it ?
Made from scraps of rock maple pulled from my bin :-)
More info about X-Carve is available at www.inventables.com/

    About 20 years ago I was a signwriter and had access to a huge esab router about 12' x4' we used to do a lot of infill with paint, epoxy etc but used a large syringe to fill the routed lines this was a lot easier to clean up and sand afterward. Still the best way to do this in my opinion.

    Blackrain4xmas Its all down to the feeds and speeds - once I worked that out things ran a lot smoother. The default settings in Easel are too aggressive IMO. If your using the stock spindle, don't use a 1/4" bit , stick with a 1/8" End mill.

    Nice project! and sorry for the crazy question but which epoxy and dye do you use? I just did a large inlay with some Apoxie Sculpt black which is nice - but it takes too much time to apply and mix, would really appreciate pointers to products I can pour and need only a bit of sanding if I can keep things level.

    Can I ask how you keep your epoxy gloss looking? I tried using epoxy on a sign, and when I sand it smooth the epoxy is no longer glass looking, it has scratches all over it. I have tried 320 grit, steel wool, even a buffing pad with no luck getting back gloss looking, even after clear coating.

    I almost ordered an X-Carve about a month ago actually. In the end I went with the Shapeoko3 for the rigidity--but I don't have it yet, as I'm still on the waiting list. Did know you were using one...how have you found it to be? Have you done much metal-working with it? I think that's what I'll be doing most.

  • @FletcherHandcraftedGuitars

    @FletcherHandcraftedGuitars

    Tom B I'm liking it, the stock spindle is a little underpowered but that's easily fixed. No metalworking here, all wood :-)

  • @bluehornet6752

    @bluehornet6752

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yup... A new spindle isn't terribly expensive, right. If I was only going to work with wood, then I think I would have gone with the X-Carve as you can get a larger one than the Shapeoko3...for the same money. But I ultimately decided that the rigidity was more important than the size, so I went with the Shapeoko3. Since most of the work I'll be doing is smaller than the 16x16" cutting area, I think I'll be alright for a while.
