Inventables X-Carve - Assembly & 1st Impressions
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Inventables were kind enough to ship me one of their new X-Carve machines to try out. In this video I assemble it and give it a workout.
More info about X-Carve is available at www.inventables.com/

Outstanding! Once again you totally amaze me with your work Mr. Fletcher! Truly love watching you do your thing. It's obviously not, but you make everything that you do seem effortless, it's a joy to watch you work, and your vids are always a pleasure to watch and learn from. Thanks for sharing with us, cheers!
Thanks that was a really helpful review and guide to the x carve. Far more detailed than most. And a lot of good info.
Fascinating! Thanks for posting.
Can't wait to see what you do with this new tool... It's like having every master template at your finger tips.

Steve Carmichael Thanks Steve ! I hope you find some of the video's useful
Templates are only the beginning with this thing. You can make very intricate inlay designs on fret boards in no time flat with this guy too.

Three things, David: 1. If Inventables doesn't link to this video and use it as a guide to assembling the X-Carve, they're really making a huge mistake. This has got to be the most complete, concise, and well explained X-Carve assembly and review video that I've ever watched, and I've watched quite a few. Very well done! Thank you so much for making it. 2. Gorgeous looking template. Even the 1/4" thick template should be good enough for someone without a CNC to use to make a good 1/2" or 3/4" thick cutting/routing template, right? 3. Soooo... does this mean that John over at Labels Extreme now has a little bit more competition? (Sorry John - I had to ask!)

Fletch - have you had a chance to try Fretboard Inlays, Radius, and so forth - the ability to get that all done on the fretboard would be very awesome - thanks for sharing this
You are such a pro and an invaluable source for luthier knowledge. I finished my strat & its magic! Thanks for those videos! I've been learning fret work and set up as advised... honing my finish work. My progress as a builder is directly linked to your excellent teaching ability. Keep 'em coming. So, how much money do you have invested in CAD & CAM programs, and universal G-code sender?
Very nice and very cool. Thanks!

AudioAtmos Thankyou !
That is so awesome. An don't have to have a big huge bulky machine taking up like 6 to 8 foot or more some where in ur shop.you also made it look so so easy , which I'm sure it's not for the average guy. But the work to do is far from average. Can't wait to watch you do a real guitar project with that bad boy. Great stuff my friend!

Ah mate, if I only knew you were making templates down in the 'Gong (up in Newie myself), I wouldn't have just ordered some from the Netherlands! The end result looked pretty good, I gotta say.

As a test it would be good to cut another template and see how similar it is. Ideally it would be identical. Looks like a great tool.

Mike Dawkins Ive done it a few times, I've lined 4 templates on top of each other and I could drive a 1/8" bit thru all of the bridge holes perfectly.

That was cool Fletch, very nice video and excellent videography. Makes me want one of these milling machines now!! Can I ask what is the camera you are using for filming, from the nice depth of focus would I be correct in guessing a DSLR of some sort?

You mentioned needing a more powerful spindle to cut hard maple. Do you plan to pass the template step and cut a guitar body directly? This great video is more than a fair trade for the machine. Well done!

Gene Takach To be honest I take pride in building guitars by hand. That's not going to change now I have this machine. This machine will just help me do stuff like templates and inlays etc
wow thats awesome mate! Jealous as hell :) That'll do wonders for your workshop
My X-carve just arrived this week. Thanks for the great assembly guide! I'm currently designing my basic guitar bodies and necks in AutoCAD. Do you think Easel will work for radiusing fretboards and doing neck back profiles?
@FletcherHandcraftedGuitars
9 жыл бұрын
Steven Familo Hi there Steven, Easel is not really going to be suitable for what you are wanting to do. You would be looking at Fusion 360 or something similar ( has CAD / CAM combined )
An open sourced mini/portable CNC is genius.

Love your vids, thanks for sharing this with us. Just curious about a couple of things, how much does it cost? And could you do highly detailed carves, like pockets for inlay work, in say an ebony fretboard? Cos if so the possibilities with that would be endless if you could find a sharp downcut bit with a tiny tiny radius! Then again it might be a bit too impractical, i don't know.

Hi Fletcher, Do you think is possible to carve wood guitars body directly and to not have need of macking only master template? Dont' you think it would need a proper router bit? thanks in advance.

Umberto Sgobba I would need to upgrade the spindle to a more powerful unit before I would contemplate carving a guitar body

hey fletcher have cut any body or necks on the x-carve...
That thing looks like it could be all kinds of time saving fun It must be a bit of a weird adjustment...I mean it does take some of the tactile element out of wood carving...but as a time saver, the possibilities seem endless

Steven Edwards Oh yeah, there's lots to do with this machine. I Must point out though that I am only go to use it for things like templates and inlays. I take pride in making my guitars by hand, that's never going to change
So are you going to cut bodies with this machine?
Hey Dave....Tom from Texas...where did you get the really small router bit that I saw you cut fret slots with and what size was it? Thanks in advance and hope you are doing well.....Tom

You got it free......not same as someone forking out a huge $1600
A quick tip. Leave the outline to be routed last, do everything inside the body shape first. Less of a chance for the material to move during the routing.
How much does one of these machine cost? Is it a fair price for the quality of the work it does?
I can make a video too if they send me free machine :D
