055 - X-Carve: Unboxing, assembly and initial impressions

Inventables were kind enough to offer me an X-Carve for no cost to me to do an honest review of the unboxing, assembly and initial impressions.
For more information on the X-Carve, go to the Inventables website www.inventables.com/technolog...
You can try out Easel for free, whether you have an X-Carve or not. Visit www.easel.com

I look forward to future videos related to the CNC and the software side of the application. Thanks for the videos.

This is probably one of the better reviews I have seen. I especially liked your review of the software. That is something that is left out a lot of times. I look forward to your CNC videos. Worked with them for 30 years which is the reason I actually bought a CNC Laser engraver/cutter. Thanks for the great video.

Jim Coogan Thanks! Its really only been in the last few years that CNC hardware has become affordable to the hobbyist, and I don't know if the software is all there yet for the hobbyist that isn't also an engineer. Hopefully I'll find a solution that works well for me!

Excellent video on the X-Carve! I'm putting mine together now. I too want to learn more about the other software out there and get into the 3d carving aspect of it.

Not yet, but I've been looking up other stuff off and on. Need to research it some more.

Steve Carmichael I am using V Carve pro for most of my "practice" so far and Im looking into ArtCam pro which is looking to be a pretty awesome 3D program!! My concern is if UGS can handle 3D carving or if I would need to use another program like Chillipepper or something. I know Grbl does not work with Mach 3, which I hear is the best G code program for 3D carving! Steve please let me know how your coming along in the 3D carving area as you progress, either message or videos would be great! I am really wanting to get into some 3D stuff!

Tommy G Workshop UGS will do 3D carving - it'll really handle anything so long as the G-Code is appropriate. Depending on what program you're using to generate the GCode, you may need to play around with UGS settings to allow for (I think) 70-characters per line of code. I know I ran into that issue with MeshCam.

Great overview! I also did not have the room for the 1000mm version but did increase one axis of mine when I upgraded the SO2 to the X-Carve to give me a 500mm x 660mm machine. I can't wait to see what projects you come up!

Mike Merzke Thanks! I actually watched your video on that last week and thought that might have been a better solution for me (cutting the rails), but by then my X-Carve was already shipped and in the country ;)

I didnt find the self tapping screws that bad. I actually used a torx bit in my cordless drill to do mine. Id get the screw started by hand and then finish it off with the drill. Worked fine

I would love to see some videos on the software side of CNC, that and figuring speeds and feeds are my 2 biggest weakness right now!! I am using universal G code Sender and Im starting to kind of understand how it works but I still hit a few bumps here and there! Looking forward to more videos on the X Carve!! My video on the workstation I am building should be coming out soon!!

What would be cool if is if you made your gcode sender an IFTTT "recipe". That way you don't need to code up the "messaging to the phone" part, and instead people can choose to get an email, or whatever else they want.

Doug Williams Thats not a bad idea - I'd been considering just using PushBullet, but I may just make that part extensible so whatever end point (IFTTT, PushBullet directly, etc) can be added on relatively easily.

synapseZA Yup, I was given the choice between the two and I simply don't have the room for the 1m^2 unit. Maybe down the track I'll have the room and will upgrade to larger rails. For now, however, it should still be good for what I've got planned

***** Technically its New Daily Persistent Headaches (NDPH), which is 'migraine-like' or 'tension headache like' in levels of pain and persistence without some of the symptoms. Its rare for me to get vision issues, but it does occur. The real kicker is I wake up with them every single day.

What was the actual cut time on the clamps?

  • @TheWoodKnight

    @TheWoodKnight

    9 жыл бұрын

Jeff Ferguson I was in an out of the room and doing other things, so I don't actually remember, but it was in the ballpark of 40minutes. I didn't have my feed rates anywhere near right (could have taken fewer steps or moved quicker), but ultimately for something like the clamps I could have made them faster using the tablesaw and a drill. However, it was a really good "Hello World" project to test for accuracy and repeatability. The clamps were all within tolerance and all the same size, so it was good to see my machine setup correctly :)

Is it really worth $800 for the base model or $1300 for the one I presume is shown here? It's a motor, a couple of servos and a logic board attached to an aluminium frame. The parts value of this machine is probably a tenth the cost to consumers!

TheRebel3000 The Shapeoko 3 comes in a good percentage more, the OX CNC Mechanical (no electronics kit) comes in ~1170AUD, the Nomad 883 and other similar enclosed CNCs are at least double the price. While I'm sure many of the components can be sourced cheaper than the overall package, they're never going to be as quick to get up and running as the 'off the shelf' kits. Particularly for me, I'm not great with electrical portions of it, so that'd take a lot of extra time. Some of that time can be solved by using the open-source data of the X-Carve (workbench.grabcad.com/workbench/projects/gcl5zpCuwqCXWLvYktLQBc-2IHvossNo37ycTOkzg6gREW#/space/gcvs_XeRNVzNkfG_tFTAMd0C2lBbCsLcagOxXb1Jlki0kT/folder/858489), but like with most things in life it comes down to effort/reward.
