Thanks so much for the excellent instructions. I just used this in my shop but made my own jig for routing instead of spending for the StewMac version. A bearing glide, angle aluminum, and 2040 T-track set be back about $40US. Turned a bumper for the base on the lathe and I reverse mounted the 5x3 inch angle aluminum so there's no need for a spacer to raise the guitar body. Your work is very clear and has helped me with my first guitar build. Thank you!

Using the fine tips to deposit the acetone with the binding already taped in place is a stroke of genius. Your channel overall is a joy to watch. I salute you, sir. :D

Packing tape, it's clear to see your work, the adhesive has 10x superior holding strength vs all other tapes, and it's cheap!. It comes in different widths for different areas. You can get it anywhere, hardware store, your favorite shopping store. Excellent videos Mr Fletcher, attention to details and craftsmanship is brilliant!

That was great Fletch. I used to use super glue on my ukulele bindings, which was great for sticking skin to wood! Haha! Never would have thought of acetone. Gonna use that method on my Tele build projects. Fantastic guitar build videos. Thank you very much Fletch.

those binding jigs are irreplacable when you need it. Nothing else can do it. It might sit on the shelf most of the time but when you need it you're glad you have it :) Great video as always mate

Very clear and intresting video! Wanted to ask what material is the binding made of?

Your video's are incredibly helpful for the aspiring luthier. I'm working on a guitar that will include a natural flame maple binding. How do you recommend bending and gluing the binding? And if I stain the top of the guitar, how can I prevent the stain from bleeding into the binding? I imagine it would seep under tape.

Great video - as with all your videos you have succeeded once again in taking the guesswork (and more than a little of the apprehension) out of attempting new detailing techniques. Looking at the router jig, though, would it be possible to grind some metal off the corners (or to chamfer the bottom edge) on the "guitar side" of the router mounting to allow you to work around a slightly steeper arm contour? It seems there's at least half an inch or so of extraneous material along those edges.

You area very smart craftsman. Is you router jig bought or did you make your own,

can you flip the z axis carrier so the router is mounted on the other side, then it would go much lower?

Would naptha work also,and will this method melt epoxy?

Fletcher, What Router you use in the videos? Where to buy the templates for Strat and Tele videos? I have templates already, but wanted to follow his line of construction has helped me greatly.

So, I've been reading that acetone is better for perloid and a glue called "rooglue" is good for ABS. Since Rooglue is from down under.. I figure you're the best source for the answer. The acetone is considerably cheaper to purchase and looks relatively easier to apply. I have both here... I can only assume the rooglue leaves shine-ons that effect the finish?

Re; binding glue. Did you use pure acetone and what about acetone based adhesives? Some have dissolved binding into acetone and used that as glue. Opinions please. Thank you for sharing.

i use this same method but i use thin CA instead of acetone.

Hi David, I'm just wondering if you've ever considered using plumbers waste pipe fixative for binding. Here in the UK at least there's 3 types of waste pipe connection; push, screw and solvent weld. The solvent weld is acetone-based, but is a thick paste, so might help fill minor gaps. I've not tried it myself, but have a binding job to do soon on a custom SG style I'm working on. Anyone else tried it?

No, the Acetone melts the ABS binding into place.

what kind of glue is that??

You know David, I was thinking that modifying the base that the binding router attaches to would give you a lot more clearance for deeper arm cut binding.

I wondered if you tried this type of gluing method on a scrap of wood to make sure the acetone melts the ABS all the way down to the bottom of the routed channel, making sure you are not just melting the top of the binding?

Hi Wilf, I certainly did test it before going ahead and using it on a guitar body. The acetone freely flows to the bottom of the channel and the bond is good. 3 bodies in now with this method and it is rock solid and a lot less messy. Cheers

Yes. Acetone melts plastic. It basically glues to itself.

Did the acetone cause the grain to raise? Is that the discoloration where the acetone soaked in the grain before you sanded it?

More than likely its the 0.060" thick binding

What kinda tape are you using and how long(and what temperature) do you heat the binding at those tight curves?

You heat it just enough to bend it. Be careful not too much heat..it melts and burns the plastic0

Hi Fletch. The doughnut has a flat bottom that rides on top of the arm contour, but the arm contour is at an angle (not horizontal). So it's only the outer edge of the flat part that has contact with the body at the contour. Doesn't that make the binding channel somewhat shallower there than at the flat parts of the body? Like 7.5 mm instead of 8 mm? Or is the difference so small that it's invincible?

I am having this problem, the channel is perfect around the flat parts but the channel around the arm contour is shallower because the doughnut doesnt rest on the very tip of the guitar so my arm countour channel is about 1mm shallower, i cant think of any way around this 😢

Sorry mate, its already routed and the guitar is sprayed with lacquer. My Strat Series shows the neck pocket being routed though ( Part 7)

It melts the ABS Binding

read the MSDS on the acetone. You're PROBABLY fine in this small and infrequent exposure to it, but acetone absorbed through the skin in too large an amount will cause neurological damage. Better safe than sorry I'd recommend some latex gloves when doing this job.

you say you use 'acetone to glue on the binding? do you mean CA glue? super glue? do you just use acetone? how does it bind?

Acetone melts the abs plastic binding allowing you to use the melted side to glue it in place

Mate, all over the place really. Depends on what it is. If you mean the maple, I have to buy that direct from Canada, wouldn't find a piece like that in Australia I don't think
