Writing Linear Equations: Point-Slope Form [fbt] (Point Slope Form)
This video by Fort Bend Tutoring shows the process of writing the equation of a line in point slope form. Eight (8) point solpe form of the equation of a line examples are shown in this video which includes using the slope formula, slope-intercept formula and the point slope formula. This math concept, writing linear equations in point slope form, is used in all algebra, geometry, precalculus and calculus courses. Intro/Outro by Shirley Q. Liquor. Instruction by Larry "Mr. Whitt" Whittington. Fort Bend Tutoring Point Slope Form

***** Hey Kat! The problem asks for a line perpendicular to the given line. Lines that are perpendicular to each other (lines that intersect and create right angles) have slopes that are opposite reciprocals of each other. That's why we use -3/2 instead of 2/3 which is used in lines that are parallel to one another, not perpendicular.

For problem 7 why didn't you use the m=2/3? you used the -3/2 in the point slope formula. I'm thinking that the m=2/3 should be written into the linear equation and not -3/2 in the last step of this problem. Please help me understand your selection.

Thanks!! excellent systematic process that keeps track of the whole, with good habit on negative numbers. Any way was wanting to see how you deal with the negatives in the point slope formula? When points given are seen as positive in distance form the origin.
@FortBendTutoring

Our pleasure Daniel! Negative values are treated the same as positive values in the point-slope formula. We have several points with negative values within this video. Also, every point in the Cartesian plane will have a positive distance from or to the origin no matter what quadrant it lies in. Try using the distance formula to confirm this. Thanks 4 watching!

The part that confuses me is the combining of the signs right after the part of y-yone=(x-xone) and the dividing, do i always divide the numerator?
@FortBendTutoring
8 жыл бұрын
The reason we combine the signs is to simplify the equation. Just know that you haven't completed your problem if two signs are next to one another. To resolve the two signs use multiplication rules. Which problem are you referring to as far as "dividing" is concerned?

When u labeled ur values for x1 x2, y1 y2 what criteria did u use to assigned the respective labels for each value. I mean I know that each number in parenthesis is either a x or y value often(always) the first on is x and the second one is y but when there are two parenthesis how do I determine which one will be the x1 or x2 or y1 or y2?

Is -3/2 the same as -3/-2? so when you flipped it and changed the negative are both the rise and run negative or just the run?
@FortBendTutoring
8 жыл бұрын
No they are not the same. To get the perpendicular line's slope you need to flip AND change the sign. So the original line's slope is 2/3 and then after flipping and changing the sign you get -3/2. As far as the rise and run goes, it doesn't matter where the negative goes as long as it's just a total of one negative used overall.

I’m slightly confused about WHY you subtract x - 0 in a few of your equations, but in others you don’t subtract anything. Is it because it’s x -0?? These values are always in the (x-x1) part of your ‘y-y1=m(x-x1) equations. One example was #8a. I guess I’m a little confused as to why you don’t multiply the ‘m’ by distributing it to the (x-x1) in all the equations, and why in only the equations that end up being the (x-0) in the y-y1=m(x-0) are the only ones that end up mx (or #x)? ... if that makes sense... it’s a bit difficult to explain via phone screen 😬 Thanks in advance!! Your videos have been a LIFESAVER this semester!!! You have no idea how much you’ve helped me understand what the heck is going on in my college math class! Don’t know what I would have done with fbt!! I tell EVERYONE in my class how awesome your channel is 😊 many many thanks, kind Sir!
@FortBendTutoring
6 жыл бұрын
It seems the confusion comes from having the x1 value equal 0. That’s the only time you’ll end up with the mx term as the point-slope form does not require you to distribute the m in the m(x - x1) part of the formula. You are most likely use to the slope-intercept form where you would distribute.

Why can't s=slope?? or am i the only one that thought of that?!?
@FortBendTutoring
8 жыл бұрын
Great question Dave! You're not the 1st 2 ask that, so no prizes will be sent 2 you. The reason is "s" had already been assigned to several values commonly used in math like s = side of a polygon and s = arc length. So to minimize confusion, they gave slope a different symbol other than the 1st letter of the word "slope". At least, that's the reason I tell myself. :-)
