Systems of Linear Equations: The Substitution Method [fbt]
This video by Fort Bend Tutoring shows the process of solving a system of linear equations using the substitution method. Six (6) examples are worked out and explained. This math concept, systems of linear equations, is used in all algebra classes, geometry, finite mathematics, precalculus and calculus courses. Instruction for solving systems of equations by substitution by Larry "Mr. Whitt" Whittington. Intro/Outro by Chuck Knipp's Shirley Q. Liquor. Fort Bend Tutoring Substitution (fbt tutoring)

Wow, five minutes in and I'm understanding this in aspects I didn't think I could. There was something about the way my teacher worded these concepts that I simply couldn't grasp - but you've made it so easy. I'm so happy.

I think what you are doing is great. the way you explains things in the sense that it is absolute helps me understand and accept what is being taught. Any chance you could allow a pause or prompt on maybe the third or fourth problem to allow time for someone to try the problem out? Or designate a problem for us to work out? thanks Mr. Whitt!!
@FortBendTutoring

Great suggestion! I'll consider it. In the meantime, if the next problem looks similar press pause and try to solve it or do a similar odd problem in your textbook. Most likely you'll find the odd answers in the back of your text. Thanks for the feedback!
We've just uploaded our video for the elimination method! Good luck on your test!

Where did the 5y come from in example #2? Thank you.
@FortBendTutoring
7 ай бұрын
Hello Odell! The 5y is the sum of 4y and y. When combining like terms, you add the coefficients of the terms. In this case you’re adding the 4 in 4y and the 1 in 1y.

How did you get the 40/5 for problem number 2?
@FortBendTutoring
3 жыл бұрын
Hello MsDera426! I rewrote 8 as 8/1, then multiplied the numerator and denominator by 5 to get an equivalent fraction 40/5. This was all done to get fractions with the same denominator so that I could add them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJx_o7qThZPaqbQ.html

Hello Mr. Whitt! I’m just curious, For multiplying decimals and subtracting. On problem 6 towards the end, How did you get 1.6? Did you multiply the 2 by the 8 but brought down the decimal to separate them and how did you get .4 from 1.6-2 wouldnt it just be 1.4?
@FortBendTutoring
3 жыл бұрын
I multiplied -2 times -0.8 to get 1.6. I believe you may have missed the -0.8 because it’s written as (-.8).

why do you solve for x sometimes and y sometimes?
@FortBendTutoring
6 жыл бұрын
I pick the “easiest”variable to solve for. Sometimes it’s an x, other times it’s a y. The choice is arbitrary.
how would you solve 3x+4=-y and 2x+y=0 using the substition method

Can anyone explain to me why at 12:37, he chose the second equation to solve for x? i just need to know what the secret is to being able to tell which equation is easier to solve for.
@FortBendTutoring
8 жыл бұрын
+MsDera426 In that instance, there wasn't an "easiest" variable to solve for. Just know that some choose based on the number of steps and others choose a variable to solve for based on how small the coefficient is. It's a personal choice and "easy" is relative to each individual's belief as to what "easy" is. You'll know which variable is easiest for you with experience. Until then any variable you isolate will help solve the problem. In the meantime, you can use this as a guide as to which variable to pick.
8:46 We will also need infinitely many solutions for our answer to check if we got the answer correct or not, like when we are converting from one form to another. If we have one solution or no solution, then we made some mistake that has to be fixed. Otherwise, if we have infinitely many solutions to the system, then we are AOK.
