Wrath | Book Review

Ойын-сауық

Not everyone makes it out of the God-War alive in John Gwynne's epic conclusion to his series, The Faithful and the Fallen. Here are my final (spoiler-free) thoughts on the final book, Wrath.

Not sure how long it took, but when I do audiobook + physical book, it goes extremely fast and that what I did with this series!

Yesss the review I have been waiting for!! I am so happy for you that you had such a good time with this series :) And it is crazy how similar our reading tastes are; I kept thinking of things I wanted to comment while watching this review and then you literally pointed everything out in the video. Those two scenes you mentioned... chef's kiss, I loved them so much! It is interesting, because I can very easily point out some of my criticisms of the series (which are basically the same as yours I believe) and yet I was completely along for the ride and enjoyed it immensely. John Gwynne just writes some good old-fashioned fantasy, but he does it exeptionally well imo. My ranking of the books would probably be: 1. Ruin, 2. Wrath, 3. Valor and 4. Malice. Do you plan on picking up the next trilogy in the Banished Lands any time soon or are you taking a break for now?

I think my order is the same as yours. And I agree, Gwynne is just a solid solid solid fantasy author. He's not bringing anything new to the table, but he's excellent at what he does bring. I think I'll give it some time before I come back to the Banished Lands. Have you read the next trilogy? How does it compare to The Faithful and the Fallen?

@@DragonArmyBooks Yes, I have read the next trilogy; I dove right into it after finishing the Faithful and the Fallen. It takes places roughly 130 years later and it is so much fun to see how the story and characters from the main/first series have become legends now. I honestly don't know which series I prefer best... The cast is a bit smaller in the trilogy though and I think that helped with my immersion in the story (plus the fact that I already understood the worldbuilding at that point). I might have had more of an emotional connection to *some* of the characters in the Faithful and the Fallen, but there was some great characterwork (and representation of autism) in Of Blood and Bone as well. The writing was comparable to the writing in the later books of the main series and the action scenes are still super good (and long... I believe the final battle in A Time of Courage takes up even more chapters than the 35 chapters you mentioned for the final battle in Wrath). All in all, if you liked the Faithful and the Fallen, I cannot imagine that you wouldn't at least enjoy Of Blood and Bone as well. That was way too long, but oh well... I hope you enjoy the series when you decide to pick it up! :)

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to get through Malice. It was just SO much to keep up with. After finishing Malice I knew I had to go straight through the series or I would forget too much and at times it still felt like a chore to keep up with all the POVs. But I’m glad I stuck with it because I became so invested in the story and some of the characters. I, too, was certain some of my well liked characters wouldn’t make it to the end, and was surprised. The final battle was so well done! My personal ranking of the books (favorite to least): Ruin Wrath Valor Malice
