The amazing thing about those signs is that they all showed things about themselves that are unique, but when they passed it to the person standing next to them, that was a thing that those two people shared in common. So, we have these five amazingly talented people who make such beautiful music together, and despite how different they all are from one another, they still share so much in common.

We all do; we just have to look for the commonalities. I have things in common even with people I dislike intensely. It doesn't make me like them, but it does make it easier to understand where they're coming from.

I've seen this so many times and it still brings me to tears. It is such an important message and so beautifully delivered. You probably picked this up but the cards represent both their similarities and differences. Both Scott and Mitch are gay, Kirstin and Kevin are Christians, Kirstin is Latina, Avi is Jewish, etc. This video is such a beautiful representation and celebration of diversity while reminding us we all share one integral thing - we’re all human at the end of the day. A beautiful video to go with a beautiful timeless song.

If it weren't for their stunning resolution, I don't think I could watch more than once a year or two...but with their beautiful message, I listen whenever I need to revive my faith in humanity...or have a good cry. This song is powerful on its own, the message is so profound and then they added to it and of course their beautiful vocals are magical! We are all humans and deserve dignity! I’m so glad you did this. I also recommend Rise by Superfruit, and read the description as it adds to the gravity of the song at the time that they all sang it!

I see their incredible Wall of Sound after Kirstie's verse as a metaphor for the song's message. Those powerful harmonies are possible only because of the strikingly different voices and variety of ranges and tones. Humanity is stronger exactly because of our differences, and when we come together, we can create something magical. Lennon would love it.

PTX is just a symbol for this song. There is no better way to show identity and unity, as Pentatonix consisting of such a diverse group of people, with all the differences that we see, and yet, they unite their voices in a way that few others can. This is really a symbol for being diverse, but treating each other well and overcoming individual differences.

Thank you, as always for your reaction. I agree they did so well in staying within the scope of the original in style, even improving on it (as usual) with their arrangement. I honestly think John would have been impressed by simply having white and black men with a woman sing this song in such perfect harmony. I think he would have been overwhelmed with hope for the future if he knew that gorgeous harmony, developed over years, with deep friendships embedded, became this ode and anthem from two LGBTQIA+ people, a Jewish man, a Black Christian man and a Latina Christian woman. "The world will live as one." We still imagine it.

I was not aware Mitch doesn't gender himself as a man. In fact I can't find that after looking at a dozen profiles of Mitch online. Wikipedia informs me that he is "gay" but doesn't suggest anything about his gender beyond "Grassi wears ninety percent women's clothing, and is enthusiastic to express a more feminine side; he feels "clothing is genderless. It's all about expression and feeling and the art of it." The sign for man is applicable to several who don't hold it up. Unless I've not been informed... I don't think the passing of a sign is any more definitive than not passing it at a given point. @@blitzofchaosgaming6737

I think John Lennon is somewhere smiling and is thrilled at what Pentatonix did with his song. And I love your message, too. I've never understood hating someone just because of their skin color, their religion, their sexual orientation, their gender, their political party, what country they come from, or whatever else you hate about them. I consider myself so very lucky that I had parents who taught me to look past these things to the human being "within".

Wonderful reaction! I think this is one of the most beautiful examples of their Wall of Sound, which create often in their arrangements. After Kirstin's verse when they all step forward and sing together it is just stunning. I love that everyone got a verse, in this. It seems very appropriate to the song, and it isn't a given in their arrangements since Kevin and Avi (then) or Matt (now) don't necessarily get that in every song.

Here is a video of Kevin's cello-boxing segment of the Christmas show in 2022. He usually gets a standing ovation for this. Matt's drum set is smaller but it has the part where Kevin joins the dancers. As far as I know he is the only person on the planet who can do this. It's so non-traditional that I can't think of another band that would use this segment on tour. It doesn't fit into the normal boxes but neither does PTX as a whole so it works out well. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpZ3w9Wvk7HeZ5s.html

We like to say that Pentatonix doesn't do covers, they do upgrades, and for the most part it's true. But how do you upgrade a song that's already perfect? Well, if you're Pentatonix you look for a way to make that song more itself. In the case of "Imagine" Pentatonix treats the song and the song's writer with the utmost respect, and engages in a dialogue. John Lennon saw that things like religion and nationality divide us, so he suggested that we get rid of those things. But Pentatonix sees that it isn't possible to get rid of religions and nations, so they propose another solution. You see, the real problem is something much deeper than religion, or nationality, or even money. The real problem is the human tendency to reject people who are different. So Pentatonix looks for ways around that problem, and then they show us how a healthy community deals with differences. First Pentatonix looks for and finds the things they share with each other, the ways they're alike. And in the process they also find the things that make them individuals. And because they've already found the things that draw them together they can not only accept their differences but celebrate them. Doing that, looking at differences clearly and with love, gives them greater insight. It makes them a stronger, wiser, more compassionate community, and they all benefit from their diversity. Instead of dividing them diversity draws them together, until they can look at everyone and see the one thing that we all share - we're all human. And this means that when they meet someone who is very different indeed, in ways that otherwise might seem bizarre or dangerous, they can still see that fundamental truth, that we're all human, and we're all in this together. Unlike everyone in Pentatonix, I'm old enough to have heard John sing "Imagine" live. And that means I'm old enough to have the evening news from December 8th, 1980 seared on my memory: John Lennon, dead. Killed by an assassin who ambushed him when he was coming home after an evening out with his wife, Yoko. For those of us who remember that night, the grief and shock remain as strong now as they were almost 43 years ago. John had only 40 years on this planet. We have no way to know what else he would have given us if he'd been able to live out his full life; all we know is what he DID give us, his perfect anthem, "Imagine." I wish he'd been able to see this video. It would have made him so proud.

Well, DANG!! As many times as I have heard this I STILL teared up when the wall of sound hit after Kirsten's solo. Your reaction was SO genuine and real it kinda made me even MORE emotional. I hate you!! (joking... that was awesome!)

That's the last of of my top three PTX songs, and how appropriate that you reacted to this and _Brothers_ _in_ _Arms_ so close together, both of which are about our common humanity and how that can be cherished or wasted. Have you looked at any of Avi's solo work? If not, do try some (maybe _Change_ _on_ _the_ _Rise_ or _Otherside)._

Imagine by Pentatonix may be one of the most important videos of this century. This group took a classic, timeless song of tolerance and peace and modernized it as only they can. They are a perfect example of what respect and love can be like. Five people with differences in race, religion, gender, and sexuality can do beautiful things when they work together. I cried when I saw and heard this the first time. I still usually tear up when they go into Wall of Sound mode. Pentaholics are the ones who need to see this the least. I do think John Lennon would approve.

The group literally represent diversity, and if this bunch of people can come together and create masterpieces like this, there’s no excuse for anyone. I just find it sad that all these years later, not much has changed. John Lennon was ahead of his time, and paid the price for it, but we’re still fighting for the same things as back then. Great reaction though ❤

I read somewhere that Lennon once said that this song is the musical version of the communist manifesto. But then again, he liked being outrageous.

Mr. Nick, I have so many thoughts about what you have shared with us. I love this version of Imagine by PTX. I have seen it once before but it didn’t have the magic, shine, and reverence then. Like PTX, with every cover song, you upgraded the group and the song. Truly a gift to me. Now, I’m going on a little segue about the song itself and how could I do that without paying homage to John Lennon with a sprinkling of our mutual friend Dimash. In Dimash’s mini-film “The Story of One Sky”, he uses the word “Imagine” in all caps in his lyrics when he sings, “We are past the moment of IMAGINE”. I can’t help but wonder if he was referencing this song. Just a little thought seed, if you will. Today is my birthday and I can’t “IMAGINE” ending it in a more meaningful way. You are a gift and I thank you.

Just FYI. Imagine it's a song written and recorded by John Lennon. The Beatles were no longer a band at the time. So this is not part of the Beatles discography. His ex Beatles member George Harrison did play guitar on the recording.

Absolutely love this song from them. Definitely in my Top 5! I knew you'd love it. Another good thing about the cards - this was the first time that Scott came out as gay to the wider audience and in such a meaningful way. People knew he was gay before, like his bandmates. He didn't necessarily -hide- his sexuality but he also didn't exactly put it on blast either. Whereas Mitch has always been loud and proud so much so that he had to play 'masc mitch' persona in the Sing - Off year because the network wasn't comfortable with calling attention to his sexuality on the show. You can tell that Scott was nervous about the cards I think. When Mitch hands his card off to Scott they join eyes and it's like Mitch is saying 'you can do this' to Scott and when he flips it to Man and hands it over to Avi if you want that part he just has this big ol grin starting to tug on his lips. Recommend 'Popspring 2016'! It is live, done by MTV I believe in...Japan? They do 4 songs, 3 of which are originals (Cracked, Can't Sleep Love, and Water) and they also do one of their Evolution songs as well and it is amazing. They sound just as great live as they do in their videos. Water is one of my absolute favorites from it. It never got an official music video either so Popspring is one of the best places to see this song. The water droplet on the screen behind them, syncs up so perfectly with Kevin's beatboxing during the song!

You nailed it. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were such peaceniks, and this song challenged every institution that led countries to declare war. Vietnam was raging, we were all just one step away from the Cold War devolving into nuclear winter and social unrest was at its peak in the U.S. interesting side note, the original was co-produced in 1971 with Phil Spector, the originator of the Wall of Sound description so often applied to PTX these days. So, 50 years down the road and the message is still entirely relevant. I think it’s safe to say it’s a classic. Loved your reaction. Peace …
