Alan, I never bottom the tang out, I always leave a LITTLE gap there to wick some glue in the fret ends. The slots will be shallower on the sides (after radiusing) so just allow for that . Best to slot a scrap piece of wood the same thickness as your fretboard so you can dial in your depth of cut. Very cool that you & your son are building a guitar together, good luck

Yeah I do, I'll watch the highest res I can get. Plus let me say that I've watched most all you vids so far, starting with the in depth Strat build and have always been impressed. But this guitar really struck me as very cool. Being able to see just what you're willing to do to custom build a guitar. Plus it's very stunning. I would love to start building, but at 48 years of age I'm not sure I could ever live long enough to attain your level of expertise.

I do watch them in hd. Big fan here. When I come to youtube, I go to my subscriptions and think "hope david has a new video up", I dont know how that sounds but its true. I had the great experience of restoring an electric guitar some years ago (the luthier did all the job, but I helped with ideas and stuff haha). Enjoyed the whole process, and thats why I enjoy your vids so much. Just wish we lived in the same town, I have so many ideas for my guitars haha. Keep up the great work!

It looks awesome David! The majority of people wont even notice its a 5 string until they get a close look. Personally, I think the style of inlay work you did significantly reduces one's ability to notice there are only 5 strings. I think your gonna have another satisfied customer, heck maybe Mr Richards himself will be placing the next order!

Seriously fantastic sounding guitar David. Looks fantastic on the head stock with just the five tuners. Would be nice to get the purchaser to upload a video of him using it and running through the whole different switch settings for the pick up's. I'm intrigued as to how it sounds on a decent amp.

Yeah, I don't show it in the video but there is an arm bevel on the front that I carved into the mahongany body first and then I bent the maple down over the contour. I was then able to route a binding channel in.

Hey, you're like an amazing guitar builder, it's really cool to see custom guitars like yours built step by step in your videos. I also build guitars but I've only just started. I built an acoustic in 2010 with my grandpa and am working on a couple strats right now. I haven't gotten good enough to cut out the body shape and route everything yet but I hope to soon. :)

Jeepers Dave that is one hell of great looking guitar. Did you say that you bent the maple cap onto the body?? That is seriously doing my head in how you would go about doing that. Its something I'v thought would be cool to solve a few problems but never imagined you could actually do it.. That is awesome! Love the pickguard too, kind of a little Vox-ish. The inlays and everything, the client has to be stoked with that! Very nice!!!

720p full screen usually here. The sound quality is significantly better in 720 and obviously the image is better. My monitor won't do 1080 (1440x900) but 720 is a good compromise.

David: Would it be possible for you to put together a tutorial showing all of the essential tools & accessories necessary for someone to build a guitar from scratch? I have a wood shop, so items such as Table Saw, Band Saw, Drill Press, Routers, Planers, Drum Sander, Radial Arm Saw, etc.. would not have to be included. I'm mainly interested in the must have tools & jigs needed. Your Guitar builds are fascinating, informative, & demonstrate superior craftsmanship! Cheers, Steve

Hello David,I have been using your videos to try and discern the best way to create my own guitar. This is for my design studies, therefore the shape of the instrument is my own, however I am using a bolt-on telecaster neck. Due to lack of funding and availability of materials I am able to use maple to create the body, however due to the material available I have to use 3 pieces of the wood in order to make the body, I intend on creating a so-called centrepiece for the neck, pickups (one hum bucker) and bridge (hard tail) and with two wings either side of this. Is this wise? Is there any methods you would recommend or other ways of going about this project? thank you very much. :)

Hey David, quick question... As my son and I begin our first build, I curious how deep yo cut the fret slots in the fretboard? I'm using the StewMac cutting template in a crosscut sled on my table saw. If I cut the slots, then sand the radius, it seems the slots will be shallower on the outside edges compared to the center of the fretboard. Do you bottom out the tang so it contacts wood on the outside edges or do you leave a gap for glue?.

Im interested in building a 5 string guitar as well. I was wondering if you could provide some specs on the neck. Is it generally the same width as a traditional 6 string, just with wider string spacing, or did you narrow the neck (if so, do you still have the dimensions at the nut and end of fretboard?). Thanks.

I guess if I'd have watched the whole vid before commenting, I'd have seen its a regular width neck with wider spacing. I think I'll design mine in the same fashion.

5 strings are almost always tuned to an open tuning, most commonly open g. keith richards is famous for playing a 5 string tuned to open g. if they were tuned the same as standard (minus the low e obviously), then i agree that it would be a very odd tuning.
