    The five string open tuning is the original blues tuning that the blues masters used in the 20's and 30's. Most of them started out on banjos then switched to electric and took the top string off. Keith didn't invent it but was taught it by Gram Parsons and Ry Cooder. Ry had already mastered it and Keith learned some tricks from Ry. Lot of history in that tuning not just stones songs, though there is nothing wrong with stones songs.

    Dave's World of Fun Stuff I do Open G a bit differently. I use Open E Tuning & put a capo on the 3rd Fret to get Open G w/ a High G on the top end. I got that idea from Lenny Breau who's known for playing a 7 String Guitar w/ a High A.

    I too use open G with a diff. The 5th is a high G. I can do so because hack a baby size classical guitar....its shorter length and I use a nylon string number 1 and tune it to high G. Then I change the string number 1 with metal string and tune to high D. The result is a fantastic picking banjo sound when I pick the rolls and claw hammer strum.

    Actually there's no advantage in the vintage stagger commonly used. The G strings on electric used to be wound, so the vintage stagger is kind of bullshit for today's string sets. By that I mean you can see they made the B string pole piece a lot lower than the G to compensate for what used to be a big volume difference, and the B is even a bit lower than the high E which has always been less powerful,than the B. The magnetic field of the poles is fairly broad in all pickups anyway. Look at blade pickups and the coveted early flat-pole Telecaster pickups, look at p-90s. No string stagger is used.

  • @timothysullysullivan2571

    @timothysullysullivan2571

    I never understood the staggered heights- i mean a bend is a much larger change in distance to pole. Doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

    Generally they should be 3 to 4/64ths on the high E and 5 to 4/64ths on the low E. Hold down the string on the last fret and measure from the top of pickup to bottom of string. The high E side should be 1/64ths closer than the low E. Once you set it you can raise or lower a bit until you're happy with the sound, but that will get you in the ballpark. With humbuckers you wont hear much of a difference with a small adjustment, single coils will sound terrible if they are too close. There is no set height. All that matters is that you like what you hear.

    I don't think that's a Fender body. It looks weird as shit. The horns aren't the right shape, the edge contours don't look right and the pick guard doesn't sit right. I think someone bought an American strat neck and bolted it to a piece of firewood.

  • @daleweber2579

    @daleweber2579

    That's because Dave is video recording the guitar close-ups at different angles. He should've removed the whole pickguard and neck, to see date stamp neck heel in the neck pocket. Trust, me man that is an actual Fender strat the previous owner did a crappy Sunburst finish. I bought an old but real 1993-1994 Fender standard for $167 on ebay with the finish done the same way. Mine came from California was gigged a lot. It did need re-setup but with lots of TLC & patience. Since it was west coast traveled snow belt area I had to give it a Fret dressing mainly bevel the fret ends, fret level and reglue reshape the nut. Took me about 8 hours now neck feels 100% better like new. Then I had rewired it, my guard is black, pickups are black (stock Mexi ceramics) since it needed a tone pot change out. I went an changed the input to switch craft, used better wiring vintage cloth, installed old Fender fat 50s which are like alnico v. and also the bridge to a proper stock vintage one, the previous owner took the original and installed a crappy one. Spent less than $70 on repairs saved me a lot more by doing it myself. I don't mind it because I'm restoring mine back to stock, but I'm gonna re-paint it back to the factory solid black finish from Fender but it'll be in nitrocellulose.

  • @diddlytube

    @diddlytube

    6 жыл бұрын

    I standard tune w/ 10-46, so for fiddling with Open G, I put on a mixed set, using the Ernie Ballsack 10-46 and 11-48 sets. For the outside / detuned strings (6,5, and 1 -- Low D,G, high D) I use the strings from the heavier set. For the DGB in the middle I use the strings from the 10-46. This may not be exactly correct in terms of ideal string tension, but it's less sloppy / buzzy than just tuning down using a regular set. I have one guitar permanently set up this way. If you want the true Keef sound, you leave the low string off. That gives the open G chord a more characteristic "G" flavor, instead of having the low D color the chord with an inversion.

He took off the low E instead of tuning it down to D because it made too much low register phasing chaos, it's such a full sound on its own it pushes everything else out of the way in a group, constantly banging on it the way you play the open chord formation, sliding up and down the neck.

    Intonation checking/setting should always be done with the guitar in a playing position. Having the neck in an elevating cradle with the weight of the body pulling downward on it because of the slant caused by elevating the neck, serves to cause more relief at center-neck and a potential for imperfect intonation. Just sayin'.

    From what I know, Keith Richards plays in open G tuning, in which case the lowest string isn't really necessary and quite hard to avoid when you're playing chords.

  • @gryzew

    @gryzew

    He's tuning to open G and doesn't want the bass D string to get in the way, has an open clean G chrod with the G root note, G-D-G-B-D instead of D-G-D-G-B-D. Joe Perry tunes one of his live guitars to G-G-D-G-B-D where the first lowest G is a baritone/bass string tuned an octave lower than the second normal guitar string.

    I think Ry is bitter over he was never given any credit for his input at that time. I think he feels he should have been given some acknowledgment for “honkytonk women”. I don’t know. All these guys absorb consciously or not the sounds and ideas of all the music they’ve heard, and sometimes other people’s ideas and sounds come out in their own music. Very little is genuinely or wholly original. Richards has said musicians are like antenae, receiving sounds and recording them for future use.

    @@maximilien_4382 I normally press down the strings at the highest fret and adjust the pickups to the point where they almost touch the strings. Then I adjust to taste. If you have a strat i'd recommend lowering the middle pickup for less output for clean playing. The closer the pickups are to the strings the more Output they have. If they are too close they get muddy. I hope I could help and sorry for my bad english.

    Yes for some reason fender lacquers over the whole fretboard on the maple necks, and it looks like crap as it ages and is worn away due to playing. Enjoyed the video.

    It would look a hell of a lot shittier if they left it un sealed, it would be filthy within a few months and damn near impossible to clean without harming the wood grain. Also a lot more prone to changes in atmospherics. Ive seen this before on parts guitars with warmoth necks etc and its ugly.

    I bought my American Standard Jazz and Precision basses and never noticed lacquer coming off the frets. I even unboxed the Jazz Bass at the store myself. Do they do it that way on all of them? I've had them both for quite a while and I've gotta see if I notice any stuff on the frets still......I did get different strings and setups on them before they left the stores too though. Do you think my techs were smart enough to clear that up for me without telling me because they knew I'd whine and bitch and complain until they fixed it if I did notice it?

    Leo hated the way the maple necks looked after some use. He felt it was a negative image for his brand out there. That's why he went to rosewood fingerboards in 62. But it does change the sound slightly and the feel quite a bit. Laquering the maple is just a way to try to counter the wear/darkening.
