I recently attended a workshop by Josh Hanna. and Nathan Loker and it is interesting how each of you approach photographing athletes. I really enjoy watching your video's particularly since I also use FJ 400's. Thanks for taking the time to create and share your knowledge.

Great video thank you for this! Quick question on the beauty dish as can’t see inside - you said no diffuser but I assume you have a reflector in front of the bulb to push the light back to be reflected off the dish itself?

Excellent video as always, Matt. Great point you made about shooting a burst in natural light to find the best shot in a pitcher’s motion. What are the biggest considerations in choosing the aperture? How much of the subject are you trying to get in focus, especially when holding the ball out or throwing it up?

Thanks brother! It really depends on what mood I’m in haha. Sometimes I go closer, wider and distort their hand and make it more blurry, and sometimes I go more compressed and get more in focus like this shot. And sometimes I do both! Usually when I’m using the compressed lens I won’t shoot quite a shallow if the stadium light is far behind them because I don’t want it to be too blurry. I do want it out of focus, but not so much that you can’t tell what it is.

Thanks for the insights, Matt. I have been trying different ways to shoot holding the ball, but it was a rugby ball in my case. I didn’t realize how much your angle to the subject matters too. I will keep practicing!

Another great video. I have 2 x Godox AD300 but only have soft diffusers (Octas) rather than the deep focus reflectors that you used at the end of this video. So my question is when do you use octas and when do you use those deep focus reflectors? What is the difference in terms of what they produce? It looks like your deep focus reflector fits directly onto your Godox AD400. Is there an equivalent for my AD300? Also, do you have any videos shooting tennis?

I actually don’t have any Godox lights. Mine are all Westcott. But I think you may have given me a great idea for one of my next videos! When to use hard light, when to use soft light and what the difference is. Thank you and stay tuned!

@@MattHernandez I would love to see that as most YT videos focus on soft light. By the way I thought that Westcott FJ strobes are merely rebadged Godox lights in the same way as Pixapro

I assume that’s a 200 ws strobe? If so Im not sure. That’s one stop lower than the lights I used in this video, so you’d have to have them quit a bit closer to get enough power to underexpose the sky when it’s bright like it was in this video.

Light follows the inverse square law so you’d have to bring them twice as close. The AD200 lets you put two together to make a 400W.
