Working on IGP hurdle with my German Shepherd

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Started his hurdle jump recently. He’s not the strongest jumper. We are taking it slow. Jump is at 30 inches now so we need about another 9 or 10 inches for full height. And yes I know he touched a little on the jump I rewarded but I’m ok with that. I’m rewarding his effort. I want him to enjoy this like he does everything else. We worked on this earlier and he’s definitely a little fatigued. We will get there

This is very nice, but what I do in obedience is, I tell the dog to jump and get his dumbbell or whatever he’s gonna do out there and I run toward the jump and tap it tap it tap it and say jump jump and then run backwards, but facing him if you know what I meanand sometimes I even do it on a line only in the very beginning

I just feel as though doing it the right way from the very beginning builds muscle memory, but that’s just me

Dogs learn from making errors so I don’t have an issue with it not being correct from the beginning because the dog obviously knows the parts to the behaviour. Personally though I feel the dog made two different errors and was only rewarded for one in the behaviour chain so there was a learning opportunity missed. Personally I would have rewarded after he didn’t touch the jump with a marker. In the least (I have one that says “correct, continue on” if I didn’t want to stop & literally reward/reset), & then marked (as was done) when he took the jump upon return to complete the sequence.
