My mother in a Catholic school suffered as a lefty… late 40’s and 50’s. Southern New England, most superstitious place in America.

I heard that left handed mercenaries were quite popular because of the advantage they had in towers as shown here.

I also heard that those old hats, with a larger rim, had usually the right side bend upwards, to make room for swinging the sword.

Opposite of sinister is dexter, which gave us dexterous, or (mentally) adroit.

I'm a left-handed person. So i would be one of the most valuable sword fighter at the time. Especially when fighting in a castle.

I've heard that this is also the reason men's shirts button with the left side in front - the sword can get caught in the gaps while trying to draw it if the shirt is buttoned the other way.

I don't see (in my imagination) what you describe. but what I heard is that the buttons of a man's shirt are positioned as such that right-handed people can undo them easily. buttoned garments were complicated to fabricate initially and so only rich people could afford them. "circles" where it used to be normal that the ladies had their own maids to help them get dressed. so, a woman's shirt was "operated" by a person facing the wearer. now, to facilitate their work, those buttons were placed as such that it was most easy to button them from this "side." a "customary" that never changed up until these day even though most women dress themselves.

I think I am going to disagree with you on the origin of 'put your best foot forward' but you get bonus points for using the word cudgel - it's been a long time since I've heard anyone utilise that vernacular 😅
