I'm very impressed with how Deane w able to point out the letters by looking at the monitor! And glad also to know that Caesar's supplies of tactical cabbage were kept safe.

It would have been even more difficult for the fact that he didn't speak modern English. So all I would get would be gibberish.

    Latin, not gibberish.

I was just thinking that the enigma machine probably worked on these principals.

This code had some sort of revival as "ROT13" early in the computerised world. Simple, usefull - but luckily replaced :)

Fun! But not quite 25 or 26 times: in the days of Julius Cæsar, the Latin alphabet didn't yet have J, U, and W: I stood for both I and J; V stood for both U and V; and there were no words that had V doubled in a way that has since become W (so yes to CONTINVVM, but no to WIGGLE).

That would have been interesting, especially as a task for children, that it would have been explained that, especially with longer texts, it is also possible to look for letter patterns without trying the up to 26 shifts, especially if letters repeat themselves, because there is no such thing as a yy or certain combinations are more common than others.

Have you tried cryptoquotes? Rather than simply shifting each letter, the order is completely shuffled. You have to solve it by looking for such letter patterns. Punctuation & spacing is included, and are strong clues for solving. Not really for most children though.

He misspelt "Carthage" and in a forgotten moment of history, Rome waged total war against Cabbage farmers of the ancient world by salting their crops so that they couldn't grow again.
