I notice that the secret behind the real magic trick remained a mystery. Well done.

I love this channel. I was a young child through the late 80s and 90s in Canada. The production of these videos brings me straight back to Canadian television from the late 80s and 90s. Perfectly matched. Always get ideas from here to show my kids.

I loved this show mid80s. The flares and sideburns remind me of school teachers and every single hippy from the 70s .

I looked up the Dyson fountain thigummy. It was back in 2003 at the Chelsea Flower Show and called The Wrong Garden. The illusion of water flowing uphill was actually built by Derek Philips, one of Dyson's engineering staff, and took about a year to build. (All according to the BBC newsite.)

How was the water kept in the glass when turned upside down? And how was it "boiled"?

@@razdwa7220 I wouldn't think a porous cloth would provide surface tension? Maybe it has to do with how he poked the cloth into the glass.

When the glass is turned upside down the now lower air pressure in the upper part of the glass prevents the water from leaking. As long as the cloth is sealing the glass, air can't get into the glass and in the upper part where the low air pressure is holding the water in place (Of course, eventually the cloth will get wet and will begin dripping). Now you pull a bit on the cloth, you won't break that seal immediately because you pushed the cloth in a bit in the beginning. So you can pull on it and while doing so just a tiny amount of air will get into the glass and will start rising up to equalize the air pressure. That's the "boiling" part. You need a bit of practice for sure, but there is not a lot of magic involved ;)

Spot on, and it doesn't need a lot of practice, just a glass narrow enough for you to get your fingers around BUT the idea of the show was not just to get people discussing it but TRYING it for themselves - Rob

I remember seeing this clip posted to the channel a while back but it was suffering from a lot of weird choppy cuts and such, looks like this repost has done a lot to improve the video quality 👍

Didn't the Dyson vacuum guy have an upwards waterfall made for the Chelsea Garden Show in London that worked by the same idea?
