Hey FZ, was wondering if you would be willing to share your crucible recipe. Prefab crucibles are too expensive to be disposable and are known for cracking at high temps such as are needed for crucible steel and if that happens during the heating process I could lose my steel. Yet yours seem to hold together perfectly and withstand the high temperatures. Been tinkering with knife making for a little while now for my hunting and fishing buddies and myself but wanted to delve into crucible steel to make a couple of sets of field knives for my buddies and I for hunting and fishing out of wootz. I would really appreciate any help or advice or recipes I was also wondering; in your testing, what is the average Rockwell hardness on these blades and do you think they would be suitable for workshop tools. If so I'm asking because I would like to make myself some marking knives, plane blades, and chisels for the workshop as well but not sure if this type of steel would be suitable. I use my chisels quite aggressively, and my planes on end grain for shooting which is hard on those fine edges and require me rehoning my Edge quite often when using on hardwoods like ironwood and hard maple. Do you think this still would hold up to shop tools?

Amen! Geometry is what makes a Japanese style blade what it is. There are a lot of really big kitchen knives being made on KZread and the makers are calling these things katana or tanto or whatever.
That isn't a sword, it is a work of art....You sure don't leave any room for a second chance with your grinding work....one mistake would show like a broken thumb. Very nice Sir.

@@cheetodorito7403 there is no such thing as a ninjato. Ninjatos only exist in movies and tourists shops. Furthermore, shirasaya is not a type of katana, but rather a sword mounting tool to store different kinds of swords (nihonto) such katana, wakizashi or tanto. This most likely resembles a shikomizue, albeid a short one.
Outstanding as always. Steel like obsidian.

Woa. Đó là 1 thanh kiếm rất tuyệt. Nghệ thuật đến từ sự đơn giản. Không hoa mỹ hay cầu kỳ nó vẫn là 1 tác phẩm nghệ thuật.
Absolutely beautiful! Only issue I have is that it is more a wakizashi rather than a katane given the size, but it is still a gorgeous blade! I also extremely admire the sheath and handle.

He’s also not a certified master smith, he did not make it with Japanese iron sand in the traditional forging process, he did not carve out a drip/debris channel in the scabbard, the tsuba is not existent, he glued the tang into the tsuka, he did not Clay temper the Katana for differential heat treatment, and he designed the scabbard, tsuba, and tsuka himself rather than sending it out to a master to be completed. Point is, there’s a number of reasons it’s not a katana, beyond just the size.

@@jb3760 believe it or not, none of that actually matters. I believe a real katana (nihonto) is only classified as such by Japanese law if 3 conditions are met: 1. If the blade is of tamahagane 2. If the blade was forged in a forge with an appropriate shrine 3. The sword was made as a piece of art rather than a weapon and thus must be seen as 'beautiful'

Just stumbled across your channel and I absolutely love your craftsmanship. I was curious about why after forging the blade to length, you don't forge the tip into the blade but use the angle grinder to cut it in. Is is just easier to do for timing?
