I was 20 and I Saw this show. As i remember, Wynton just finished a Jazz mobile concert at Thompskins square Park with the Art Blakey and the Jazz messagers.. Woody Shaw was observing the show. I spoke briefly with Woody Shaw and he said he had to split because he had a gig to get to at fat Tuesday. I walked with him to his gig and got to see him live when Wynton walked in and asked could he sit in. Woody Shaw didn't actually agree to him sitting in but for Wynton being the New Hired gun on the block Woody agreed. Woody looked like a shark about to eat his next meal. Woody's approach was so different and creative that his performance was not appreciated by young Wynton. In those Days Wynton's attitude was very disrespectful towards the Master's of Trumpet and caused him a lot of turbulence in the industry. I remember the ultimate butt whooping came when they played What is this thing called love.. if you have that recording, you'll hear the Master school the student. Woody Shaw was the one of the last greatest innovators of jazz and trumpet Nuff said

what a historical recording.. thank you for posting. The untimely death of Carter Jefferson is really a big loss to jazz

No Doubt Mr. Shaw was the greatest modern jazz trumpet players of all time and one of the most advanced trumpet players , technically and harmonically that ever grace this planet. and I'm sure that Wynton was all ears that night. let me just make this clear Woody Shaw was one of the most beautiful people I ever met. He took extra time to help me in my studies. He suffered a very tragic ending of his life and he never got the total recognition he deserved .long live the spirit , soul and music of Mr. Woody Shaw. At 11:10. Mins. on this tune is his trademark intervals that no one to this day could ever hope to achieve.

A lot of us trumpeters play those intervals these days. Thing is none of us could ever lay claim to inventing that approach to trumpet playing. No matter how much of us learn it, Woody did it first- and best.

It seems a lot of great trumpet player die young. Maybe it just seems that way. But woody was one of a kind on trumpet. I heard Blue Mitchell in person. Totally awesome too. My grandfather died young too. Bunny Berigan. Different type of jazz but still great Jazz.

18 year-old Wynton Marsalis did a great job for his age. Way ahead of others his age at the time. However, he’s no match for the genius of Woody Shaw here, which is understandable, of course. Kudos to young Wynton for having the moxy and the courage to play in the company of the great Woody Shaw. Wynton did seem to fare better when he was trading choruses at the end with Woody. And that’s a testament to young Wynton’s ability to listen carefully and to learn. I heard Woody Shaw in live performance in 1979. To this day, I have not heard a trumpeter equal what I heard Woody play that night. It truly transcendent.

Where can I catch your act? I'm curious about people like you and students of Joe Henderson. I was never able to study with anyone of that caliber. In fact the only greats I was ever able to see live were Harold Land (playing live in the park in Tucson AZ), and Joe Farrel who came to town and did a master class at the U of Az. There's an attitude to Woody's playing here. Cordial host, friendly to a younger colleague, but spraying a lot of notes. As if making sure Wynton was aware this was the deep end of the pool.

Woody Shaw is unbelievable here to!! Love how much they sounds different and even tho Wynton is young he sounds like himself already! Very inspiring recording..

Love this. Two of my biggest trumpet heroes since I was a kid, but for different reason: Woody, blazing new trails with his innovative approach to chromaticism and wider intervals, and Wynton for his singularly beautiful sound and extraordinary command of the instrument. Even here at 18, there's nothing "new" happening, but the astonishing virtuosity is already evident (listen to those 16th runs at about quarter = 185! ) making me think of Freddie, Lee and Booker when they were around the same age. Both of these gents (and the rest of the band) giving a lot of inspiration! Thanks so much for posting!

@@jamaalwicks hey Jamaal! I'm based in Richmond, VA actually, but I've toured in TX a lot over the years. Played a brass festival thing in Commerce this past July; one of my first chances to travel since the pandemic started.

Great recording Jamaal. Thanks for sharing the sounds. I saw Wynton play when he was just 18-years-old (in Detroit w/Art Blakey) and he blew me away with his virtuosity, articulation and control in the high range. He had a very mature sound and impressive technical ability for a kid trumpeter. And yes, playing alongside Woody was venturing into deep water. Woody was a master trumpet stylist who could teach young Wynton a thing or two at that point in Wynton's budding career.

Very true. His fundamentals were so ridiculously solid that nothing was beyond his reach. I last saw Wynton about two years ago. I went backstage after the concert to talk to him. He invited me in his dressing room. Because I intentionally had my trumpet, I got to play for him. He gave me some tips then we did some call and response. What a great experience.

@@jamaalwicks Very cool Jamaal. Call and response with Wynton had to be a trip. Woody and Wynton are two masters. Kust imagine, today Wynton is older than Woody lived to be. That was tragic to lose Woody so young. Like Fats. Like Clifford. Like Lee. Godspeed to our many great trumpeters who left a legacy of great music to uplift and inspire us all.
