Wood Turning The Great Illusion Ruth Ann Berry Quilting Pattern

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I make a segmented turning with a very cool illusion.
It is all about using 3 types of wood to create a shadow effect,
It was a lot of fun and has given me ideas for doing more with a different design.
Made from Purple Heart, Teak, Maple and Cherry.
Finished with Deft spray lacquer and Acks Sanding Paste and Polish/Restoring Paste.
Tools used: Bowl gouges and negative rake scrapers

Outstanding, Gary!!! It’s always a pleasure watching you turn wood since you come up with all sorts of neat jigs to assist in cutting and in assembly. As a retired engineer, I designed things but did not make the parts. It was the machinists who came up with the way to machine parts using jigs they made. The same for your wood turnings. Those who do the actual work are the true masters of machining and turning wood. I am always in awe in what you come up with to turn wood. I learn so much from you; even in my 70s I am still learning.

Thank you very much John. As a retired wood pattern maker I loved working with the engineers where I would take their drawings and design a way to make it so it could be used to make metal castings. I will never forget working with and engineer at the former(Freightliner Trucks) now Daimler and none of his fellow engineers could even see from the drawing what he had designed. As soon as I got it I started asking a few questions and he said: You can actually see what I have designed! That was a good feeling as I had just finished my apprenticeship a few years before that. To add to the story my son went to work for them years later as a mechanical engineer. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary

Gary, Oh, my. You've done some masterpieces, but this one......... It's outstanding! Your choice of woods, precision and execution are simply the best. You're a master, for sure. I want to make this. I haven't turned any thing in quite a while. This has given me some much needed inspiration. I guess I'll brave the 100+ heat and start selecting woods and dimensions. RP

Thanks so much RP. This was a lot of fun to figure out and make. I normally use Walnut, Maple and Cherry for for tumbling blocks but with this I wanted a dark back ground and I think the Walnut would not have stood out. The Teak worked perfectly. And I appreciate your very kind comments. I know you will enjoy making it and have lots of fun doing it. We are supposed to hit 102 this weekend but that changes every 5 minutes. Enjoy the process and I am sure you will do great. Take care, Gary

It's Beautiful, Memorizing... Just simply Amazing! It really does fool your eyes. I used to watch my dad, as a kid, while he was wood turning, and was simply amazed by some of the things he made. I'm still amazed by the things you can do today! I wish I could of had his lathe because I'm still just star struck when I watch you at work and would love to be able to do some of these things myself. I work odd jobs and am always looking for different avenue to make some cash but if I was half ass good as yourself, I believe I had found something I love to do and can make a living from it! I would be blessed! That's far off, so until then, I'll continue to watch what observe what beautiful work you do! It might be interesting to see the actual 3d structure next to this. A cool conversation piece for sure!

I would be happy to share the sizes of these pieces but to be honest I do not know exactly what they what they are. Once I adjusted a scrap piece to fit I just went ahead and cut the pieces as needed. What I plan on doing is a video on the 4 sizes needed and make something special at the same time. So give me a little time to work all this out and I will share all the information with you. If i do not make the video soon I will create a cutting list on the sizes. These sizes will have to be exact starting from the width of the strips being used. Keep an eye open for this in a month or so. if not you can hit me up and I should be able to help you out. @@ThePapa1947 Beautiful project. My loving wife (BOSS) of 50+ years has put this project on the must-make now honey-do list. I have the time and wood, I just need the dimensions of the segments. I tried to guess the dimensions, but failed, now I am hoping to see your cut list. Thank you for any help and information you can provide. Take care and be Safe, Bruce

Wow. I just don't know what to say, Gary. This seems like the most complicated segment piece you have done but only you know if that's true. It certainly, for me, requires the most studying to see how it was done and even though I watched how it was done, I still can't quite comprehend it. I guess I will just say, it's magnificent in it's complexity and stirs the imagination and activates little used brain cells. As always, such a great finish to cap it all off! Fun to watch, that's for sure! Phil

Thank you Phil! Well I would say it was the most complex glue up I have done. But after doing one section of the center piece the light bulb lit up. Hmm there are only 4 shapes to the whole thing. Well it was still tricky gluing it up but that gave me the feeling that this will work for sure. And for sure those little brain cells got a real work out so I have some really easy(I hope) turnings lined up. Just real busy with a lot of things going on. I told you about the rats chewing a wire but that was and easy fix. We went camping for a family reunion last week and went to start the generator. Dang things chewed 7 wires so it would not start. And one took the trip with us to where we camped. While trying to clean out the nest he jumped out and landed on my chest. So I think I deserve a few easy turnings. That is my story and I am sticking with it LOL. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Thank you very much James. This is based off of how tumbling blocks are made. I have done a number of them. And how stars are made. Same with that I have done a number of turnings with this star. I would be happy to share the sizes and plan on making a video showing how they are cut and sizes. I think it will be easier that way because I know a lot of people will ask. If this does not happen in the next 3 or 4 weeks ask again and I will let you know what these are. I actually do not have it written down anywhere I just adjusted my sled with a scrap piece then cut all the needed pieces. Thanks for watching, Gary
