Wood Turning A Star Illusion
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This is a bowl with a star. The star is an illusion made of 2 types of wood. Walnut and Maple.
Other woods used are Cherry, Padauk and a piece of Koa.
I enjoy making things that have a lot of geometry in them. The illusion makes it even more interesting.
Finishes used:
Minwax sanding sealer
Minwax Polycrylic
Acks Abrasive Paste
Acks Polishing/Restoring Paste
Tool used:
Bowl Gouges
Negative Rake Scraper

Thank You for the detailed explanation. I followed your plan and made a similar star, however, since I didn’t have any padauk, I decided to keep the sides low (2”) and turn a platter rather than a bowl.

Thank you and a platter would look fine. Gary

@@ThePapa1947 I posted a photo of my platter on my (Rick Bourque) FB wall. Thanks again for your intricate details and video. I would have never been able to make this without your detailed video. The only issue I had was my 30 degree cuts were off ever so little which became apparent during my dry fit. So I glued up two pairs of three star tips, temporarily held then together with carpet tape and sanded the two sets flat on the sander. Of course two of the four cherry fillers had to be cut differently then the other four pieces of the base. A rather tedious process, but in the end it all came together.
beautiful job PaPa

I made a coaster like the bottom of this bowl, and now I am learning to turn. I hope one day to turn bowls, I'm working on a spindle, made with a 2X4. I'm gonna ask my tutor if we can square it off, though. A 2X4 is difficult for me. I had my first tutorial yesterday.
@ThePapa1947
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rachel, that must be a very unique coaster. By all means square that 2X4 up. I suppose everyone probably starts with spindles but I find turning bowls easier but I do turn more of them than spindles. I have turned a lot of spindle type work but they were much bigger than what people think of as spindles. Are you doing this online with a tutor or is it a friend helping you along? Thanks for watching, Gary
