In addition, the proper placement of the different colored wood pieces, gives the illusion of depth, (tricking the eye) even though everything is actually flat. Nice illustration. '-)

Thank you very much. In grade school they put me in an advanced math class which I loved but in high school the math teacher I had was well...not so good and almost made me hate math. Thank you Mark. If it is any help the "Great Illusion" I made worked the same way. The lengths were determined by the length of the 30 degree cut. And it started with an equal length parallelogram so maybe easier to grasp the idea. Thanks for watching, Gary

Great video Gary. It makes geometry easy to understand...even for me. ;-) I use the 30 degree side of my 30-60-90 drafting triangle to setup my segmenting jig. It works great for 12 segment rings, but the 60 degree angle will make 6 segment rings just a accurately. Just a tip for anyone on a low budget like me. I really appreciate your tips on how to achieve the 3-d illusion. Also, I will borrow you formula for the length of each piece. Very helpful. I would like to see more of this type video. You are quite the teacher Gary.

Thank you Gary, yes. Ideas like this are really appreciated as well as fun. I see someone pointed out the inner triangles so I think I can try. BTW, thank you again for the ring cutter model, on #2 I used a 90% fill and it is working great. Cut a few test prices then glues and turned for fun, I’m still rusty but really like your jig. Seems so much safer than the bandsaw. Thank you!

Repaired a broken gear to help out a local shoe repair shop with his beautiful German antique stitching machine. Bringing back old tools with a simple fix is so rewarding for me (but I am getting off the subject) ... SURE Gary if you are up to it try to post a quicky for tomorrow, HA. I always learn from U TM

Gary, Thanks for the inspiration. I am a subscriber and eagerly await your videos each week. This one inspired me to give it a try. I tried to send you a link to a photo, but I guess KZread doesn't allow that. In my first attempt I cut the pieces out on the CNC machine. I had trouble getting all of the joints closed properly before the glue set up. In my second try, I cut the pieces out on the table saw and found that by gluing up the outer surrounding border first, then adjusting the inner pieces, as necessary, with some sanding, I was able to get a pretty tight fit on all of the joints.

Thank you very much Ted for taking time to comment. After a few of these you will figure out how to get the glued with all at once on this size. The trick a dry fit and when you know they fit then put glue on but do not rub the joints. Just put them slightly against the other piece. If you rub the joints the glue starts soaking in and sets up. You can find my email under my About Page if you want to send pictures or have other quesions. Thank you very much. I think it might be fooling your eyes as I saw the same issue while making the sketch. I just went over it again and confirmed the pieces are the correct length and go where they should. It is much easier to see if they are colored in. Bottom line is if the pieces are cut right they will only go in one way. Hopefully I made that clear when I showed the pieces being put in place in CAD. I know it looks that way but if you could turn the drawing 180 degrees it looks correct. The whole thing is an optical illusion and even fooled me. Thanks for watching, Gary

Wow ....I'm very impressed by your geometry skills and instructions.. How can you measure and cut to such a small tolerance? Any mistake is multiplied many times.. Thank you for breaking this down to manageable steps.. I will have to try this.. Ian

Thank you Ian. It can be done with careful measuring and cutting. Use scrap wood to adjust so you do not waste the good stuff. I can usually get it with one test and and adjustment. But I have many years of adjusting a table saw to exact dimension. Give it a try and just know you can do it. Take care, Gary

The two videos are really good with great instructions. To be sure, it looks like the six triangles are 1" per side. Did you cut then to the exact size or add a couple of thousandths and then lightly sand them down for a tight fit?

Yes the triangles work out to be 1" on all 3 legs. I would suggest doing a dry fit of all the other parts and make sure that is what you end up with. If all the other cuts are right on that is what you will get. Same thing if you decide to frame it in and make it round. Those all worked out for me. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thanks for watching Patrick. I did not five dimensions on triangles as I think it is best to measure after your other pieces are dry fit together. But going with the same idea as the other pieces the triangle is 2X of the length of your 30 degree cut. I wish I had added that but again this is easy to measure after you have a dry fit. Hi Gary, thank you for this video. It actually took 3 tries to finish watching the video. One question though, If I convert to metric (mm), i get very odd numbers. If I round that numbers off, will it make a difference to the outcome? Thanks for o great video.

Thank you Japie. I guess it would depend on how much you round it off. If you are using a calculator to work this out do not bother with rounding out the formula number. Then when you get the lengths needed you could round them down to 3 or 4 places.

It could be done but this is somewhat like doing an insert. If I built the outer frame I could insert all the pieces into it.

Let me see if I have this correct. The constant is .14435 The width of the strips is .14435 x radius of pattern All bevels are 30 degrees The length of the parallelegram is the length of the bevel x 5 The length of the long trapezoid is the length of the bevel x4 The length of the short trapezoid is the length of the bevel x3 For each color wood: 4 parallelegrams 2 long trapezoids 2 short trapezoids You did not give dimensions for the triangular infill pieces, but it appears each side of the infill triangle is the length of the bevel x2. 6 infill triangles Yes more like this would be appreciated. Thank you Glen and you got all of the dimensions correct. I did not give the dimensions of the triangle as I think they should be made after the dry fit to make sure they will fit. At least that is how I do it. And yes it is a triangle with equal length legs. Happy you enjoyed the video! Gary

Another comment / question: I presume none of this is effected by the thickness of the strips. What if I vary the width of the strips? I presume the constant of .14435 changes. Does everything go to pieces? Or could a new constant be calculated?🙂🙂

If you wanted to just rip the pieces to a random width and measured the length of the angle you cut then you could times that by 3 4 and 5 to get the lengths. You loose the control of the diameter by doing that. I was showing how you can control the diameter and then get the sizes of the pieces. But yes it will work. Gary

I divided the width of the board by the radius. This becomes a common number that will work with what ever radius you choose.

Four of the long ones of each type of wood. And 3 of the others of each type of wood. But I always cut a few extra/
