People don't realize how smart and affectionate rabbits really are. They come to form incredibly strong bonds with their owners and with other rabbits in the house (if they get along).

It's not about whether you agree it should be done this way or not. It's simply what you are _supposed_ to do when getting a new bunny friend for your bunny. If you just take a random rabbit home there's a high chance that they will fight. I made the mistake of picking out a friend for my first bunny, thinking they'd get along, and she hated the new bunny. She attacked the new bunny every chance she got until the day she died and it was NINE years of emotional distress for me and NINE years of misery for the second bunny who just wanted to be friends with my first one. Maybe with cats and dogs they will likely get along or coexist eventually, but with rabbits you never know. You can bring home a second rabbit but actually they are _still_ the ones who choose to coexist. So why take the risk and do that to yourself. *EDIT:* Read the rest of the thread before you judge. I considered editing this to change my wording, but figured that might confuse people more.

Yes, they are a lot of work, people do not realise They are also not pets for young children, they are too fragile The saddest thing is seeing people get rabbits and stick them in cages 😞 also, they have specific diet requirements. 90%-95%% of their feed should be good quality hay (not straw!) and remaining 5%-10% green leafy vegetables. Carrots / Banana's should only be given as a rare treat otherwise you will induce teeth rot in them

Our home is well bun-proofed. Some rabbits are more destructive than others, some are more explorers than others. Luna doesn't like to leave the floor, so anything on a table is safe. The cables are either out of reach or covered in braided stainless steel. And yes it is very important to let a rabbit choose their own mate. Otherwise, you can *easily* wind up with two territorial rabbits who hate each other. They can get *very* violent. I volunteered with a rabbit rescue for a few years, and one rabbit Giselle was so violent that she would leap over a 3 foot tall fence to attack other rabbits. She ripped one rabbit's eyeball out … I had one foster rabbit that would climb on anything. She loved being up high and she could jump 4 feet straight up. It was almost impossible to keep her off of anything. So yeah, rabbits vary. What is "rabbit proof" for one is a mild inconvenience for another.

I adopted a wife for my male bunny too. The bunny rescue said it was a trial to make sure they bonded. I had to give them a month. It took 2 weeks and they were so in love it was crazy. It’s been over a year now and they are just the happiest silliest snuggliest little furbabies ever.

For those who live in the UK, Marmite is a very good bunny deterrent. (Other yeast extracts are available!) I smeared it on all my table legs and doorframes, and my bunbuns never went near them. You can put sellotape on first, and smear that with Marmite, to protect the wood. Eventually, the buns get so used to not going near the wood that you can take it off and they still won't try to nibble. Thanks to the posters of this video for mentioning the need for hay 24/7. So many people think it's OK just to give them fruit and veg, but if they don't get hay they are likely to get gut stasis, a horrible condition that many buns die from. Always look out for any signs of it - lethargy, sitting in the same position without moving - and get them to the vet immediately.

Sure, forced marriages are a thing that exists and they are horrible, but arranged marriages aren't quite that, even if they are old-fashioned and a bit outdated. I remember when I visited my friend's farm and I didn't realize he had 12 Flemish Giant rabits. I spent most of my time with them and eventually even had one giant pile of fuzz buns around/on me. Some of the best antidepressants I ever had. PS: Also, to give you a better idea of how it went. Eventually I would show up and one would "attack" my shoe laces as a way of saying "This way" and lead me to a massive bean bag. I would then settle into the probably 5' bag and the bun would jump into my lap. About 2 minutes later the rest would arrive, spend 5 minutes getting in their places, and cover me/the bag in fuzz. My friends even set up to tables with drinks and long straws so that I could drink without moving so I wouldn't disturb the fuzz buns now covering me (one was water the other was alcohol). This is where I would stay for an hour or 2 before eventually having to answer nature's call and I would make low rumblings to kinda let the buns know I was moving soon. I would give them 3, ever increasing rumbles before starting to slowly shake and kind of vibrate my way through the pile. Then I'd go take care of business and return to find them semi waiting and semi enjoying the warm spot I left them. Then I'd make my way back in and usually just go to bed covered in fluff.

As others have said, they arent all they are cracked up to be... Our female rabbit we had years ago was a cantankerous creature who'd nip at you to get you to move (rabbit teeth hurt) or if you tried putting her on your lap, would turn anything on the ground into small pieces, cables are slashed to hell and back if she got near them (we had to block off alot of places behind things to stop her getting around dangerous stuff) and she turned a cane basket into splinters over a couple of years... unfortunately unbeknown to us it was that cane basket that eventually killed her, as she'd been digesting small parts of it (it never looked like any of it had been eaten, just clipped up) and it started to clog her digestive system. If you do get them you have to be aware of all the problems and be ready to rabbit proof your house.

Just always know there are bonded pairs just waiting for good homes at the Humane Society, animal rescue operations and there are some pet food stores that really care about animals and adopt them out working with Foster Parents who bring in the animals when the pets are ready. I’m older so I’ve lost many pets and many times I thought “no one could replace ______”. But when I’m ready I adopt and fall in love all over again. They all have their own personalities but I haven’t met one I didn’t love. Or if there’s a small animal rehab or foster centre around you could volunteer until your ready to make the commitment again. Such a small amount of work for the love and laughs and comfort they give us 🐰🥕💝

So adorable! When I was around 8 or 10 I got a Palomino rabbit named Thumper. Oldest brother worked near a Petshop around Easter time, and will never forget when he brought Thumper home. Dad made a hutch with an old HUGE dog house that the collie dogs never liked to use. Put small holed wire mesh (chicken wire I guess its called) on the bottom so the poops and pees went thru and nothing could get in. Then made a front porch out of the mesh, so Thumper could lay in the sun and enjoy his day. But most of the time us kids (3 girls) had him in the house. He was so tame like these rabbits, but in those days, farm animals weren't allowed in the house to live, and he quite enjoyed his digs outside. He always had tons of hay to keep him warm in the winter, plenty of carrots, lettuce and rabbit kibble, water kept unfrozen by my father inventing a heating system to keep it from getting frozen. Thumper won a blue ribbon in the county fair one year, probably because he had a rather large cheering section! It was then that I was told he was a Palomino rabbit, looked exactly like the female rabbit featured here. Friend at school asked if she could mate her rabbit with Thumper, I said "Sure!" Well, poor Thumper was so confused by this female rabbit hitting on him, he could only jump on my arm to mate! lol! So much for her baby rabbits! Rotten neighborhood kid kept opening the porch door on Thumpers pen outside, and Thumper would go exploring. He was quite use to outdoor conditions though, as I took him walking regularly with a halter on him and a leash. One time that brat did it and we couldnt find him anywhere. I finally collapsed on the chaise chair on our back porch, and cried b/c I though we lost him for sure. Just then Thumper turned the corner and jumped right on my lap! He was like "Save me!" lol! That rotten kid still let him loose now and then, but Thumper jumped on the shelf running along the dog house portion of his house. When he was about 6 years old, one stormy night something or "SOMEONE" dug out the mesh at the bottom of his dog house. He was gone for good this time. Never found out what happened to him, but learned that some things were better not knowing... I loved him so...

@@sherryallen3137 Yes, he was a brat and a half, but I don't think he did that this time. He was a boy, and couldn't have climbed under and pulled that wire mesh from under the rabbit hutch by himself. Plus it was a summer Hurricane storm. So it had to be from a large dog in the neighborhood. Yes, I was very sad for a long time, but got a Guinee pig about a year later, and made sure her large pen was in the family room in our playroom. By then, mom was a little more accepting of farm type animals indoors. Plus I think she felt a little guilty of Thumpers fate being outdoors. Piglet (the GP) had 4 babies Christmas night after dinner, which the whole family and friends were down there watching. We had a nice childhood.. I'm much older now. Thank you for your comment, but I think something 'got' poor Thumper, otherwise he indeed would have come back. 😞

I looked into it last month and I read about their tendency to chew on everything. Maybe it would be best to keep a lot of your electrical gadgets in a locked room. I also heard that they absolutely love to eat non-stop. I like to watch them eat; it is cute. You found out intuitively that rabbits are social creatures, and it is best not to have only one. You put lots of work into this. Thanks for not keeping them in a cage.

Few things as sad as a rabbit left alone. Highly social. Also nothing like getting a groom from a rabbit. Always a sad time of year as we approach Easter, when people give bunnies to their children; then put them in a small cage in the back yard to be forgotten. The most shocking thing to see is a room in a Humane Society FULL OF UNWANTED RABBITS. So quiet you can hear a pin drop and you can feel the fear. Most of my rabbits lived 10 years. So this Easter, be kind- get your child a stuffed animal. Pet rabbits are a serious long term commitment.

I'm just now seeing everyone's replies so allow me to explain: I did not fix them. The older lady who had them was more into breeding, raising and selling her fowl than anything. The rabbits were just pets her grandkids had and played with until the "new wore off" (yes I know how disdainful that is, but it worked out in the end for myself, as well as the pair of bunnies). So she didn't want babies no, however I do. Myself and my family eat meat, and the plan is to raise our own meat for the freezer. The original pair will be pets. Once designated as such and named they won't ever be butchered. Once they're past production age, they'll be fixed and retired. I also plan to give the young chances to be sold, prior to freezer bound age (not on or around holidays such as Easter though where they're often purchased as a temporary fad for kids who outgrow them same as the lady's grandkids did). The female should currently be pregnant, and we eagerly await our first litter.

They have different personalities? Everything has a different personality. Insects, even--I've kept a number of preying mantids, and each was its own recognizable self. I was rather surprised, and I asked a friend, "So, how far down the scale of existence does personality go, do you think?" She replied, deadpan, "All the way to the rocks."

How cute! I've had a bunny for a few years now and we felt the same sorry for her so we got her a friend. We've been working on bonding them. I didn't realize how stubborn our bunny was until then.. While she was meeting the other bunnies she did not get along with one! But there was one she was the most calm with so we took our chances and got that bunny (another female) (FYI: we were really, REALLY wanting another bunny. We drove hours to this certain location so we didn't want it to go to waste) Months later, they've gotten so much closer but they're both very stubborn. But bonding takes time, we'd rather take the time we need rather than them fight and dislike each other for life (bunnies are very sensitive and will hold very long grudges!)
