Back from extinction! Say hello to the Little Owl.

🌱Join us to bring back endangered species and revive ecosystems: planetwild.com/4/join
The Little Owl is one of the cutest birds you’ll ever see. And right now, it’s critically endangered due to intensive land use and habitat destruction. In many regions, it has already gone extinct. We partnered with two rewilding pioneers who have found a way to bring them back - with the power of innovation and a plan that started 30 years ago.

    I've decided to make a change myself. I only have insight to problems with the environment where I live. They need to be shared before species collapse further. We are having a serious impact on our water quality here in the states due to agricultural runoff as a result of industrial agriculture. It's cheaper to spray, they think, fertilizer than to plant diverse species and properly maintain an ecosystem. I watch it get worse every year. I love the wild around me, I can not sit back and watch it be destroyed as it currently is. There is so much algae growth in the groundwater early summer that you can't see through it. Then when the growth dies after it gets hot the water turns black and smells of decay. There is a trash problem, people don't litter much but the collection process spreads it's everywhere. Simple modifications in equipment and practices is all that needs to happen to solve the problem. I have watched the change over the past 40 years and it is significant. Money is all our leaders care about, so I'm going to make it known what's transpiring. Maybe if more are aware of the problem, lots more people can join the movements that need to take place. I never watched your channel, just a random suggested video. I'm glad I watched it. I have 0 experience with KZread other than watching. I would appreciate any help that you may be able to offer for advise on how I start. I clean and maintain the surrounding area but it's just a cycle of repeat. Recent flooding made trash that was not reachable, a plastic bag filled with plastic wrapping 60ish liters. It was in the ditch that feeds a pond system for around a year before I fished it out. It was very slimy and had a few different colored things growing on it. I handled it with 2 fingers on either hand, because it grossed me out. I emptied the water from it and began riding my bike to the trash bin, about a minute after contact I started feeling like I was being bitten by a bunch of mosquitoes anywhere I touched the bag. The more time passes the worse it itched, so I went home to rinse off whatever was on me. That didn't work so I washed my hands and arms really well. Nothing was helping, I figured it was some awful bacteria and took a very hot shower after doseing my hands with 90% isopropyl alcohol. It was the worst sensation I've ever had. There needs to be fundamental changes. There's a need much greater than what I can accomplish and I have no faith in our officials because of their loyalty to industry. Thank you for everything your doing!

    About 35 years ago, my mother woke me up saying she had found an owl by the side of the road, it was tiny and we thought it was a baby, it was still alive and I spent the rest of the day with a hot water bottle on my stomach with the owl wrapped in a blanket waiting for the RSPCA to pick it up. We eventually found out it was a little owl, and another one had also been found close by, both survived and were released back to the wild.

    We had a pair that nested in a pile of old logs in our garden a couple of years ago in Suffolk England. You'd walk past and see four little cute faces looking out. Just beautiful creatures and we felt blessed to have had that. I'm guessing there's been too much ecological destruction perpetrated by the local council to see them again. They even built a long road over a huge area of amphibian habitat, much to locals dismay and objections. Our leaders are corrupt beyond comprehension. Next they plan a local garbage incinerator despite concerns by locals about the proximity to over a dozen schools including nurseries.

    This video just showed up in my feed. I am an older female American who has always loved owls. Your 30 years of dedicated work to save these adorable and IMPORTANT little owls gives me some faith in humanity, or at least some of humanity. I am spending my remaining money and years on feeding my backyard birds and squirrels, supporting bird and wildlife conservation efforts, supporting exotic bird sanctuaries in Canada and the U.S. (because these intelligent birds should have never been taken from the wild, but here we are with a crisis of abused and abandoned “pets”), and financially helping individuals who are struggling to keep the birds they care for healthy and happy. You are doing so much in Germany. The strength and commitment of our youth is what we need to save species like the little owl and their ecosystems. Thank you.

    Species endangerment is a local classification, as each ecosystem needs to find it’s own local balance and a species that’s thriving somewhere else doesn’t benefit the ecosystem where it went extinct. Little Owls are classified as an endangered species on the German Red List, but they seem to be doing just fine in England. 🦉💚

    Little Owls are classified as an endangered species on the German Red List and the long term trend is projected as „strong decline”. 😔 Species endangerment is a local classification, as each ecosystem needs to find its own local balance and a species that’s thriving somewhere else doesn’t benefit the ecosystem where it went extinct. Luckily, many regions still have healthy Little Owl populations. Other’s are trying to bring them back, like we did in Nuthe-Nieplitz. Sharing both, what lead to population decline and what works to revive it, is vital for any region to learn from.🦉

    I have generations of barn owls living in the attic of my old watermill in the Limousin,SW France. It has two different sizes of entries to the attic....one for the smaller and medium sized owls, little, tawny and barn owls, and a much higher entry for le Grand Duc, which I think is the Great Horned owl. I had six owlets this year, though something alarmed the parents and they airlifted the little ones out to another site. This was on 23 June. The same evening another couple occupied the nest box in the attic connected to the smaller opening. The openings are proper owl doorways with red brick framing in the random stone, which is honey coloured granite with a lot of blocks of white quartz. I've heard tawny owls here but there are a lot of 'Dames Blanche' or barn owls. You don't want mice in a mill!

  • @planet-wild

    @planet-wild

    10 ай бұрын

    Oh wow, that sounds amazing! Do you know if they first settled in the attic and then you/the owners decided it was a good idea to let them stay (cause of the mice)? Or it was a man-made effort from the start? Either way, it's fantastic to read about this neighborhood 🤩

    @@planet-wild I think the attic has had owl lodgers since the Moulin was last rebuilt in 1903. I started restoring it in 2016. I didn't realise the importance of resident owls till 2 years back, when an increase in hissing, and a lot of dead mice below the smaller owl hole made me go up and investigate. What I found was a shock....I had put a wooden crate up against the smaller owl hole back in 2016, without knowing about the real reason for the owl holes, presumably I'd thought about blocking drafts... I found 5 flight ready owlets, who had grown up in the 'tunnel'...in the thickness of the wall, around 55cm!! When I realised, I put a hole in the box corresponding to the owl entrance and since then they have been flourishing. However I think possibly the original grand plan was just to have owls nesting at will, unrestricted by boxes, in the attic. The previous owners told me they had been wakened one night by someone stomping around up there, gone up, and found several Great Horned owlets amusing themselves.... In 2018 a sparrow-hawk was in residence in the smaller entrance!

    @@planet-wild I'm quite content with my location. I looked up little owl and I probably do not hear them as they are the Steinkauz. We have them here,too, but given the population difference between this one and the more common Waldkauz (Kauz is just a more round type of owl) whose English name is tawny owl, I think I'm hearing (and rarely seeing ) the Waldkauz. In my county, which used to be an independent German state and only lost its status under Austrian mustache man and after a short reexistance under British occupation, we even have another forest which has never been cut down. I also loved the idea with the Steinkauz project in general. Practical environment protection with clear achievable goals and no political ideology attached. It's something we need more of.
