Nice video, I had the same preparations in my 45 year old campervan, a PLG gas heater as a standart heater so i ad a dieselheater that is heating my floorheating and the engine, it worked fine together. nice music you used! cheers!

Diesel engines have glow plugs and block heaters built in. When its cold a coil like light will show on your dash meaning its heating up the engine. Turn the ignition on and wait for the light to turn off, do fhis a few times (do not start the engine, just put the key in the on position). No need for external heaters which may actually damage your engine components more than straight cold start
@LostInEurope
Жыл бұрын
Yes they have glow plugs but they are not enough to properly heat the engine in -30 haha. Block heaters aren't standard fit on diesels everywhere.

-30 degrees C without heating isn't so bad. Think of arctic explorers, trappers, Innuit and mountaineers, they are in those temps and colder for weeks on end with no heating. The solution is correct clothing. I myself have been in such temps a lot when I was younger with zero heating, it's quite livable if you plan ahead. Other than that, good lifestyle and nice to see a video where someone isn't talking at 100 mph. :)

I had the same problem with the flame flaring up on my mini stove and discovered it was because I was laying the canister on its side the same as you have. If you stand the can up it will stop doing it and burn properly, I think it’s something to do with the liquid gas sloshing around inside stoping the gas coming out of the can properly. It might be a good idea to be fair. Although it was my own fault for not removing them. On a longer trip it wouldn't be an issue as the heater would be on all the time.
You can always use the cars preheating for emergency heat source trough the cars air-conditioning.
@LostInEurope

Ash, Do you think studded tyres and a engine pre heater are a must have for a campervan trip & stay in Chamonix for a skiing trip?
@LostInEurope
Жыл бұрын
I think after my experiences now I'd recommend putting in a pre heater if you plan on going anywhere cold to be honest. They are great bits of kit👍 as for studs they are only legal in Scandinavia not elsewhere in europe as far as I know. They ruin bare tarmac so some decent tread winter tyres would be best.

There's no way you're going to 'freeze to death' if you wear decent clothing, no matter how cold it gets. I spend all winter ❄️ living and sleeping in a BMW X5 without any form of heating. Even sitting static all day/night, you can remain cozy warm wearing the correct gear during extreme weather. A tip for gas bottles in cold temperatures 🌡️ (I use campingaz CV470) is to wrap up the canister inside a thermal cover.
@LostInEurope
Жыл бұрын
Mmm I appreciate your experiences but saying you can't freeze to death at these temps is just wrong to be honest, even with thick clothing. In this instance with an insulated van and my own experience of cold weather it's unlikely, was tongue in cheek. But for someone inexperienced who gets themselves into a bad situation you're rolling the dice. Yea definitely need to try and keep the bottles warmer for sure 👍 need to take them off the floor i think.
@Globetrotter-1
Жыл бұрын
@@LostInEurope Obviously an inexperienced person sitting in shorts and flipflops is unlikely to make the grade! 🙄😂 What I meant was, that with the correct clothing there is no actual need for heating the vehicle (I wear mainly goose down-filled expedition jacket, pants, gloves and boots during the day, depending on conditions, and sleep in a down-filled sleeping bag at night). I also do not light 🔥 fires outdoors or use electric blankets in bed etc. So yes, a person could die if they didn't have correct clothing to fit the conditions...in fact a person is just as likely to get into trouble or hyperthermia in +1C during strong winds and heavy rains in the mountains if wearing the wrong clothing.
Why don't you leave the van running over night ash it's only a litre an hour if that mate.
