Isn't that what they did??? Because in all honesty all the grand tour stuff hasn't been very good compared to their old top gear stuff. I still watch it (as you say) but mainly because each time I hope they return to their former glory. It's almost like they try too hard now and it misses the mark. The best bit was the bridge and Hammond in the boat. The rest was just lacking and no need for the "American" plot or the cars. I'd have preferred it if they had a budget to buy some old bangers then go on a mission like the good old days.

@@EchoesDistant A lot of the issues with vehicles from the 1960's or 1970's were not necessarily related to planned obsolescence. It often boiled down to either too much innovation without testing, faulty engineering without enough testing, or bean counters requiring low-quality parts that failed to perform as they should (I don't consider immediate failures planned obsolescence). Case in point, these examples from both the UK and the US: - The overcomplicated (but well-meaning) inboard disc brakes on the Rover P6 platform - genuine design innovation, but a nightmare to service. Reflected on many other UK-made vehicles (AM V8, various Jaguars). - The penchant for Jaguar's V12's (both HE and pre-HE) to drop valve seats - nothing much more than poor engineering. - Chrysler's slop-prone power steering of the 1960's and 1970's - much worse than GM's Saginaw box from the same period. - Zinc pest causing swelling in Zamac carburetors - present on some 1970's Motorcraft carbs (and to be fair, not really a problem until 20+ years later). None of these things - which all have worked against the reputation of the respective vehicles they were fitted to - were specific design choices towards planned obsolescence. All were the result of poor engineering, engineering errors, or - particularly in the case of inboard brakes - a deliberate decision to use a more difficult-to-service design in exchange for improved driving characteristics (real or perceived). Now, you _could_ argue that things like Chrysler's lousy bulkhead connector melting was a form of planned obsolescence, because they were already aware that it was only good for a limited amperage, and bypassed it on fleet vehicles as a production rule. Ditto for brittle plastics behind the dash (especially on Fords of the era) - now that's planned obsolescence.

........I've had lots of American cars....never seen a door fall apart...not even close. In fact, those parts are incredibly well anchored and you'd need lots of time and tools to get that part off. This was theater or a previous (European) owner was in there and half assed the reassembly.
