Wild Balkans - Go Wild

Wolves hunt their prey in the valleys between high-ranging dunes, bears and lynxes wander through dense primeval forest, and the big lakes are a magnet for hundreds of bird species. That is the so-called “Balkan”. Today the “Balkans” stand for a Europe that hardly exists elsewhere. The mountains of Montenegro harbour one of Europe’s last primeval forests with trees over 400 years of age. In the difficultly accessible hinterland we find the Tara National Park with the deepest gorge in the Karst Mountains - the 1.300 meters deep Tara gorge. Nearby Lake Skadar is home for 270 species of birds; no other lake in Europe can claim such diversity. Europe’s last coastal forest area can be found in Albania and in Bulgaria and Romania huge bat colonies live in the cave-dotted mountains. In Serbia one can cross the “European Sahara”, a desert covering a surface of 30.000 hectares. This documentary takes us on the journey through untouched wilderness in a region that has disreputably been called a powder keg and where conflicts have drawn attention away from its hidden treasures.

I spent a month in Cetinje, Montenegro and hiked several trails there. I was amazed at the variety and quantity of butterflies I saw. Locals also let their horses walk themselves along the trails... with no fear they will be hurt, or stolen, or not come home.

The cinematography is gorgeous. The close ups, showing so many facets of diverse birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects, is often extraordinary. I was fascinated to see solitary people, truly alone, living their daily lives without the chance of a conversation with anyone. However, constant references to Tolkien and his fantasy world got tedious, very fast. Eventually, it was irritating. A completely unnecessary addition. Nature is fantastic enough, without fiction to detract from it.

14:00 "when they were finished, nothing was left behind" This is supposed to invoke fear into our hearts... Imagine if wolves went about killing and only ate a part of it, leaving the rest to rot. Now, imagine if they were the dominant species on the planet ... Perhaps 7.9 billion of them? And, most of them kill to only eat part of it, trashing the rest... Does that invoke fear? (See what I did there 😌) Can't demonize wolves but turn a blind eye to our own feeding habits.

By waiting for a very long time. Usualy it takes a few years to film a 1 hour documentary. Its not like just going into the woods and start filming. You need a spetialist who shows you the best places for a specific animal and then you wait and wait and wait. But sometimes they also stage some shots. Somebody finds a rare animal, brings it to the team and then they put it into a good place for filming...and so on.

In claims like this, connecting present with distant past/future... there are way more possibilities than you think. mind-blowing possibilities. The sites might be thousands of years older.
