The problem is, you can’t casually keep up. Being competitive takes a lot of attention, for anything. New cards keep coming out, the game keeps changing. You can’t settle in, unless you’re 100% invested. Imagine tryna play a simple game of pick up basketball but you have to be NBA level. Also, I love yugioh but I don’t have days to go to the comic shop & play test. I used to physically play more back when I tag force to learn my deck, on the fly, with the real rules, built in. I’d much rather play online as well. Less arguments & cheating. But that play-testing made it easier to go play physically.

Honestly coming from someone who played Yugioh as a kid, but stopped after around the 5Ds era I would love to see support for various ways to play. I recently started playing MTG again and I love the variation and the fact that I can enjoy the new stuff in standard, but still play formats that either remind me of when I used to play or more loose formats like say commander, which for the most part besides a few bans I can put any card from Magic's history in. I've been considering buying some YuGiOh cards again recently and if there was more support that would be all the jump I'd need.

One format that a ton of people enjoy in MTG that I think would be really fun in YGO is the Pauper format. The base rule is that you can only use cards that have been printed in common rarity. So example, if a card was originally secret BUT it has been reprinted as a common, then that card is a legal card to be used in the format. You can use whatever rarity of the card in your deck so long as we know it has been printed once as a common. This would let a lot of weaker archetypes see play. We've have very powerful generic support cards like Ash Blossom, Foolish Burial, etc printed as commons so it's not like we won't have powerful cards to play with. Of course this YGO Pauper format will have its own banlist as well. I think this could be a very popular format for players, especially the more casual players that don't wanna drop hundreds of dollars on a deck.

I’ve always had this idea that they should divide tournaments into groups. For example, if you want to play old school with just vanilla monsters, traps and spells, you belong in group “A”. If you want to compete with a group where they have fusion monsters in the extra deck and ritual monsters in the main deck, you go to group “B”. To sum it up, depending what your deck has, that’s where you belong. Play against someone that is on your level of playing. I feel like that would be a lot of fun.

The game is becoming more and more competitive oriented in it's playerbase, so an event that is percieved as lesser with less or no prizes will inevitably flop. It's honestly why in my opinion speed duel flopped. No tournaments. No prizes. No incentive to play.

The 3v3 format that have been used on the anime of Yu gi Oh 5D have a great potential, and it could go like this to make it more balance : - The kicker is that they share the same extra deck , so 3 decks (3 players) would share a 15 limit extra deck - They have to share the same limit of 3 cards. Example is like if player number 1 have monster reborn , player number 2 and 3 cannot have it. Another example is if the first player have 3 "Elemental Hero Shadowmist", the second player and third player cannot have a Shadowmist on their decks. So this encourage the team to distribute the resources on each deck - When you reduce your opponent LP to 0, the duel ends and it goes to the new opponent. This also applies when the opponent can lose on their own turn , the player who reaches to 0, his next partner will begin right away. Speaking of this, many new strategies can come out of this if you per say pay all your life points to set up a board for your teammate that will go next (how Crow and Jack would do it for Yusei). - A downside of this is that Link summoning and Xyz would be the most played cards (on the 3v3 format) from the extra deck due to them been that easy to summon - To make it short, because is like 3v3, and pretty much it can come down to 6 duels , making it best of 1 is okay - The Side deck is also of 15 cards and it's share between all the decks - Here is the kicker with the side deck and the main decks, you cannot change between cards between the main decks, you can only change from the side deck. It is pretty complicated since on a best of 3, the first duel is always the deck list you give to the opponent, and then on round 2 you can do the necessary changes. Here though because is a best of one, players who are going second and third can do the changes, while the first players are lockdown to their list. - Finally, this is mainly to have fun, and see what crazy combinations can people come up with on this format

Coming from Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh! really needs something like the Commander Format, the most popular one by now and heavily supported. For YGO this would mean: 1. It has to be a fan-made format, so it doesn't feel like Konami made it to grab your money, but they can support it with product to get value out of it. 2. It has to be multiplayer (1vs1vs1vs1 at best) but not necessarily Tag-Duels, so it can get a political aspect of deals and archenemy moments. 3. It has to have a kind of social contract where playgroups just agree on a power level of the decks or where you can tell people at a LGS what power level your deck has. This comes with a format specific banned list as well as certain agreements between players that are common sense. There also is a competitive scene but players just have to agree first if they want to play all competitive or all non-competitive. 4. It has to have a way to always have access on some of your favorite cards, like the Commander in the Command zone who is actually always a part of your hand. 5. Commander in MTG is highlander (every card at 1) with double the lifepoints (16000?) and 100 card decks. Most combos are highly balanced by that. This format has united many tournament players with kitchen table players that can play all the old cards they want and compete with all the other decks to a certain level. And it is a huge sucess for Wizards of the Coast as well.

A Couple of Alternative Formats that I would like to see more of are the First is a Format that I've only played in an App that Per Dates Dual Links and that is Yu Gi Oh BAM! I loved that style of play. What it is You you must have Exactly 3 Cards in your Hand at the start of everyone of your Turns and You also must Use Up Every Card in Your Hand By the End Of Your Turn If Able and the rest is just Like 'Rush Duals' with Mass Summons and Mass Draws, it may sound simple but it's really fun....well for me at least. And the Second One I don't know how you could do it Especially when it's just One V One is Boss Duals.

Just have a format that you can only use cards from the last... mayb 6-10 base/main sets or something with a set rotation? And have an "Eternal" list. Like the opposite of Forbidden, which is a set of cards that could always change that allowed no matter what whether or not they were printed in the newest sets or not.

A cool one that would probably immediately have a meta is basically the "sphere field" format. The rules go exactly how you remember them from Zexal, but I think some changes would have to be made. At the start of the duel, set aside at least 15 Number cards in your "number pile" (for clarification, a number card is an xyz monster that has a number as a part of it's name, such as "number 17," "number 32", so on and so forth). At any point in the Duel, during your main phase, you can overlay two or more monsters of the same level from your hand, and then place a number monster at random from your number pile on top of the overlayed monsters onto the field, which is treated as an xyz summon. If a number monster that was summoned this way no longer has xyz materials attached to it, that monster is sent to the graveyard. Also, if a chaos number is summoned in this fashion, you can attach its corresponding number to it as an xyz material from your number pile (for instance, if "Number C9: Chaos Dyson Sphere" was summoned, you attach "Number 9: Dyson Sphere to it as material). However, you can still xyz summon number monsters from your number pile by xyz summoning normally.

The format me and friends have been playing as of late had been "Ace" format. Normal deck size, life points, ban list and board at the moment BUT it's Singleton so only one copy of each card per in deck except your Ace card which is aloud play set. It's not a completely balanced but it's very casual and slower play which reminds me twilightsworn format speed play. There's plenty of opportunity for Archetype mixing and perfect for getting older people back onto the game while letting them ease into the new rules. Very fun!

Caste party is the format where all cards are the same rarity. Another type of Pegasus challenge is having someone announce a random effect that takes place during each round. There's also highlander, all cards at one copy each. Cross Banlist is a way to experiment with meta decks of the past. Double Deck Format: exactly 100 cards in main deck, up to 30 in Extra, up to 15 in Side; draw 2 cards during Draw Phase. Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water Format (ie Be the Avatar, LOL): Must run at least 4 monster cards of each of these 4 very attributes in the main deck.

One thing I've thought would be interesting is a format where they loosen the banlist. They ban the OTKs, hand destruction loops and other things like that, but they let everything else go wild. Let us see what tier 0 deck is really the best when they go up against some competition, or if there's a sleeper pick that only works if it has this little bit of consistency that got banned 4 years ago. Push the game to its limits and see what rises to the top when you go with the syndrome strategy of 'everyone's super, no one will be'

Definitely would like a rotation style as I am a Pokémon player who played yugioh during its first years before synchros were even a thing however now that the game has changed so drastically I can’t jump right in especially with such a strong meta ... either Rotate based of sets or generations starting with releasing the old cards again forcing players to use those cards then eventually slowly release syncs, xyz, link etc or put a rotation on “specialty” cards only allows player to use either syncs, xyz, link , pendulums or fusion during a rotation or only 1 specialty card per deck so you can’t pendulum, link and xyz summon 40 monsters a turns

My issue with a rotation set up is actually something I love about Magic the Gathering. The sets would have to be something close to 200+ cards each and packs would have to get bigger and more expensive if Konami wanted to keep staples like Twin Twisters and Cosmic Cyclone in the rotation. This would open-up sets to be more draft-friendly but it would also theoretically mean digging for singles (if you're in to buying sealed for just one card) would get harder and more expensive.

Also it severely hinders legacy support. Imagine if you had to play Resonators/Red Dragon Archfiend but only using the new Arc-V cards so no Synkron, no Call, and hell, no Abyss. Typically they do reprint key cards when legacy support comes around but if Konami said, “Okay, new support for X-Sabers... Reprint half the archetype with it.” It’d cause tremendous pack bloat.

I had an idea for a way to slow the game down a bit in a separate format: other card games have resource systems (mana for mtg, energy for pokemon) so the game starts slowly and ends with game ending plays several turns later. This also has the upside that initial turns have simpler game states and are therefor are not as overwhelming for newer players. An interesting change for a new format would be if you were only allowed a number of summons equal to the turn count (1 summon on the first turn, 2 on the second turn, and so on). This turn count would include ANY type of summon. I've been testing around with that for a while and deck building looks completely different and gives a lot of older cards more use.

The only formats I could see yugioh having is things like sets designed for draft and sealed. Those are probably the most doable while being different. You could do formats based on when the cards came out. Like magic does with vintage, legacy, modern, and pioneer, standard. Where each of those formats has a card pool and ban list based off when the cards came out. that could change up the meta a bit in yugioh. The tag duel stuff could be cool in magic its called 2 headed giant. The only problem I see with yugioh and different unique formats like speed duels and whatever is going on in japan atm. Now when it comes to a multi-player format like magics extremely popular commander I'm not sure yugiohs game system itself really allows for a format like that to be possible. With how restrictive yugiohs bord is I'm don't think it would work out very well.

  • @TravisPilgrim

formats based on when the cards came out might seem like the way to go but I think it somewhat clashes with the way yu-gi-oh! sets are designed. With arechtype based design, a lot of cards rely on other specific cards. With a lot of archetypes being spread out among several booster sets, deciding on a cut-off point for a format will almost certaintly neuter some archetypes right out of the gate. Alternatively, formats could be created based on summoning mechanics. I think a lot of the complexity of the game stems from the different summoning mechanics, each with their own specific rules, and how they interact. Formats could be made based on the order in which the mechanics were introduced. Since all the summoning mechanics are color coded, it would make it easy to identify which cards are not allowed in the format. Additionally, summoning mechanics are typically tied to the different anime shows so the names of the shows could be used as names for the different formats. for example: GX format: no synchros, xyz's, pendulums, or Links 5D's format: no xyz's, pendulums or links Zyxel format: no pendulums or links etc.

I think if yugioh had alternative formats by era (DM, GX, 5Ds, etc.) it would be good. It's a good way to gradually introduce someone to the different summoning mechanics, and is good for nostalgia for players that prefer different eras. It also opens the floodgates for different banlists, for example, dandylion is obviously a bit too broken for link format, but merely a *good* option in the 5Ds or Zexal era. It's super simple to block off by sets, the hardest part is coming up with banlists, but even then, there's past lists to look at for reference.

Groups like Luxury Games do organize the Rogue tournaments and those seem popular. It basically has a custom banlist where they ban engines or archetypes etc. Konami could maybe do tournaments like that. Also on the rotation format. I would be okay with that as it's own format but I love that we don't have that as the main TCG format. One reason I love about the game is how random old cards can pop up in newer strategies in weird ways. From playing Inferoble Knights for example I've had to look at different older cards like Power Tool Dragon or Coltwing to solve the problems of the deck. Even just seeing cards like Needle Ceiling and Book of Moon popping in topping deck lists in 2021.

Old player here. I never really got into the competitive scene but was active at locals circa 2009-2011 and played the game from its inception up until the years listed. Power creep and the feeling that I had to play specific decks in order to “compete” at locals definitely discouraged me from trying to invest fully into the game. I’m at a point now where it wouldn’t be too difficult to buy whatever cards I need to run whatever the best meta deck is, but I would fall flat on my face trying to play it because the game is nothing like it was when I left it. That’s not a bad thing - new mechanics and styles of play keep things fresh - but I watch videos of modern Yu-Gi-Oh! and there’s barely enough time for me to understand how all the cards work with one another. Alternative formats would pique my interest, and I think would help keep people on board longer. I’ve had a lot of fun playing a variety of decks in Goat Format lately, for what that’s worth.

A format I'd like to see is a points for at. Each card is worth a particular amount of points, you can make a deck that costs max of X amount of points. Some cards would still probably be banned of course, but a lot less. Official support for 2 v 2 duels would be sick, been a while Normal monsters (in the main deck) non-effect (in the extra deck) only is also fun, and lets you have a lot of back and fourth with your opponent and insane combos that last so long you can feel yourself ageing isn't likely

One thing I thought of is potentially cutting the extra deck down in size, giving less outs, and maybe have rotating extra deck formats. Like for 6 months you can only play fusions and link, then the next 6 months you can play synchro and xyz, or w/e combination. This gets by the generational issue and a ban list issue since all of a certain card is banned, which makes a lot of cards that support those extra deck cards almost unplayable so you don't have to specifically ban them.

Magic has a format similar to the rarity based format you were talking about. It’s called Pauper and you could only play Commons. It seems really fun. Yugioh could also probably have a Commander type format. Since Yugioh doesn’t have color identities it could based on type and attribute. Commander is also a Singleton format (meaning you can only play 1 copy of each card). Singleton keeps the power level lower inherently because it limits consistency and combos. Lastly I think the most creative potential format is something based off of Duelist of the Roses. For anyone who hasn’t played DotR it was a Yugioh game that combined the card game with board game elements. The rules would take some adjusting for irl play obviously, but I remember there was a KZreadr who played it with his friend back in like 2011 (they called it Map Duels). It seemed to flow really well.

I remember being very excited when they first announced the Generation Duel formats years ago, which in hindsight I should have known better than to be because those formats were DOA due to a complete lack of actual support and incentive. In order to thrive, think this would require a permanent presence in side event form at major events. This also means that the player base would have to be willing to dedicate time and resources to it and engage with it as well, adding another layer of difficulty to its sustainability, but I think those formats are a great idea that provide... well, generational opportunity and viability to the game outside of the primary Advanced format which large swaths of the player base come and go with. I have no hopes it will ever actually manifest into anything, but maybe one day there will be legitimate alternative formats that stick and provide options for every type and level of player.

I like the idea of a weighted format. Would likely require something along the lines of creating a card list with point values for every card. A card's point value would be based on how powerful it is on its own, or, in the case of archetype specific cards, the overall power of the function it provides to its archetype. Your deck's "weight" would be the combined point total of each single card in your deck. How exactly this would be split into weight classes though would be heavily up for debate.

You could also combine some if that many types is overwhelming such as ritual/fusion/synchro, fusion/link/XYZ. Plus have one where all of the above is used. (fusion in both cause it's a staple for the game) I feel like doing this could promote alternate formats or at the very least make them special event tournaments like a 5D tournament when it excludes link and XYZ so prizes could be more synchro based.

Or a deck master, like the one in the anime, they did it but was not heavily produced by konami, you can further this by making deck master like commander, except by letting you special summon your deck master at any time and if it dies you then lose the game, but a added rule is, if you use the deck masters ability, you loose 2k as a cost, there for if a card has multiple effects to use it you will lose alot of life points thus making you want to use not so heavy cards, also you can use your deck masters ability from its deck master zone. But as a added restriction you can only use it once and you still pay cost, where as if you are on the field it will be able to use it as long as you have lp, also only restrict it to monsters, not extra deck monsters, and no spell/trap

Combines set rotation with a small, manageable format where a player could, conceivably, have some understanding of every card in the format (3*45, plus ~100 generic cards is less cards than Gold and Silver had Pokemon). It would also allow for drafts and sealed play without introducing new product. 3X structure deck seems interesting, but the gulf in power is massive between decks, even right from the start (The original Structure Deck Kaiba’s inclusion of a consistent OTK, Zombie Madness and Fury from the Deep compared to any other option from that era) and it doesn’t really print money for Konami. It also has an issue with ban lists

I think sealed or draft is the best place to start for new formats. It puts everyone on a level playing field so new players won’t feel bad, it can be designed to limit the overly complicated cards, and it helps sell more packs so Konami can get around the singles market. New players also can build their collections over time to eventually transition to normal Yugioh. It’s a win for everyone and I’m pretty shocked Konami doesn’t put more support into sealed/draft.

I got in to GOAT Format a few months ago and I really enjoy it. The card pool and banlist always stay the same and yet people are still coming up with new strategies and decks to this day. It's also very cheap because most of the cards have been reprinted as commons. Even though there are "stronger" decks in GOAT Format, building lesser powerful ones and facing off with those is still a load of fun as combos are still possible to an extent. While it is much, much slower than current YGO, I prefer that kind of play. I suggest GOAT Format to anyone who is looking for that sort of thing.

What do you think of Commander/DoTR formats? Yugioh could benefit from something radically different for people to try imo

Agreed 100% with this video. Paul I think you and the guys are in a prime position to inspire change. I Love the sealed and draft formats you guys put out. Magic has gained a lot of success from the other formats that are popular to players. I play all 3 games, and when it comes to magic I got back into it when I learned about Pauper and Commander formats. The player base longed for official support from WOTC and finally got it. Player can hold pauper tournaments and Commander grew enough for it to have its own committee. The committee sets a banned list and keeps the players interest and love of the game. I feel like the Yugitubers and our player base could use this for whatever format we show interest in

They could perhaps officially tier the top 5 decks and have a format where those are not permitted (archetype wise) which would then encourage use of others. (Or like a no S tier deck) There’s a plethora of archetypes, even random ones like prediction princess or an Odion trap deck. It would be so interesting to see random matchups like that rather than the predictable ‘oh another drytron vs eldlich’. It also opens the door to more skilled players rather than just wealthy players.

Hey Paul, I see you posted this video a while ago but if you see this then I might have an offer for Team APS in the spirit of the video's discussion. So for a while I'd come to a pretty similar conclusion that Yu-Gi-Oh could use with alternative ways to play, and one specific idea that came to my mind was cube drafts: homemade drafts made from a small, curated pool of single cards. It's of course very unofficial and very personalized, but I feel the virtues in it are that cubes can each be their own self-contained thing with their own internal balance, power level, and themes. And it's an idea I've sort of run with; for a couple of years now I've had one of these made I guess as a pet project, something that I occasionally revisit to tinker with and iterate on, so over time a lot of thought's gone into it. Folks that've played it seem to have a good time with it, though without other people that I currently hang out with that enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh the cube mostly just gathers dust these days. If the main channel's still on the lookout for possible content, I may be willing to lend you guys the cube to use for a video, or heck, just play in your free time. I dunno, the whole thing may just sound weird or self-absorbed, but I'd like to know what you think.

Great video. I think the way formats are handled in yu-gi-oh! is an important thing to think about going forward. I just don't see the current model, with complexity continiously growing, as being sustainable. I think Speed Duels could have been a great alternative format, but the fact that speed duel and original yu-gi-oh cards could not be used interchangeably ruined any potential speed duels had. Because of that choice, konami was basically competing against itself: you either play speed duels or Yu-Gi-Oh! but you can't buy speed duel product to slowly build a yu-gi-oh! collection to get into the original format or the other way way around. It's a shame too because Duel Links offered an easy way into the format. On top of that I think Speed Duels offered a really nice way of giving less powerful or less played arechtypes a chance by selectively introducing cards into the format. Converserly, I think formats based on rotation or a slected pool of sets is a poor fit fro yu-gi-oh!. Goat format works because it largely consists of sets from before archetype focused design. If rotation or set based formats are to become a think, they way yu-gi-oh! booster sets are designed would need to be overhauled.

I’m not going to sit here and try to create a format from the ground up but the best format Konami could make would be one to that recreates that feeling of nostalgia for people. One that lets players play anime style decks without worrying about the meta. I’ve also been saying for years that Konami could easily create a standard rotation by using reprint sets to keep old archetypes around as well as staples.

Honestly this is not to much to ask. I stepped away from the Yugioh card game when I hit Highschool. So 2006. I became a magic player exclusively from 18 years old till about 2 years ago. I’m 32 now. I’ve built 19 mtg decks and I’ve always loved the different formats. Each have their own ban lists, rules etc. Konami honestly sucks with their player base. I have never in my life heard of a company killing decks, not because they’re broken, but simply to force their player base to play their next new series of cards.. until I rejoined the game recently. Yugioh is my main game now, but honestly what keeps it fun for me is that my play group makes up different formats. I have my Blue Eyes Chaos Max deck and my full power Danger! Thunder Dragon deck with Colossus. Konami needs to quit treating its player base like trash, and focus on making this game fun and easily accessible to new players. You guys honestly need a standard format that rotates. You can keep the advanced style as your main eternal format, but killing Decks like Sky Striker and Thunder Dragons for no reason really blew. Don’t force people to trash and sell their cards. Encourage people to have a reason to keep buying old cards and new cards

I know what you mean! I started with MTG and moved to Yu-Gi-Oh! when it first came out. The thing I liked about Yu-Gi-Oh! was that it didn't have rotation. I hated knowing that after a few sets, most of my cards were no longer legal in MTG standard format. I have been out of MTG now for several years and recently got back into Yu-Gi-Oh! after a 3 year break, and its tough getting caught up with all the changes. Goat format is my only saving grace right now :-)
