Does the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG Hate Pendulum Monsters?

Ойындар

Today we're talking about Pendulum Monsters in Yugioh. Why do powerful pendulum monsters like Performapal Monkeyboard, Astrograph Sorcerer, and support like Heavymetalfoes Electrumite have to stay on the Ban list?

Relax, I just counted, and it looks like they might actually be tied at 16 cards on the current list each, even after including the five pieces of exodia, which are limited moreso for lore reasons and inflate the spellcaster number a lot. And if not tied, it's really close. Do you really think Konami hates their cash cow Yugi, when Dark Magician wins every single popularity poll ever, and they're still releasing Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes support to this day?

I feel that Konami hates Pendulum cards because the Yugioh community (or segments of the community) dislike them. So for Konami is better to try to "ignore" these cards and focus on the products that receive more positive comments.

The ones who hate them are very vocal about their hatred...usually accompanied by frenzied arguments about how high the "potential ceiling" of Pendulums is and thus they should never come back, under any guise. The power ceiling argument is true only in a vacuum, because Pendulums have more exploitable weaknesses than other decks and are especially weak against control-based strategies. Technically they CAN summon back their monsters from the ED every turn...but any competent combo strategy can do the same thing from the GY. Pendulums, however, only work if they have Pendulum scales on board, so a single MST can stop a Pendulum strategy in its tracks. And MST is one of the weaker anti-backrow cards that still sees play. Not to mention stuff like Nibiru, Lightning Storm, etc, which didn't exist when Pendulums were at full power. Pendulums could be brought back at full strength tomorrow without making any noticeable impact on the meta. Nor would they unless Konami printed broken cards for Pendulums in the future. And that's true of every mechanic. Mechanics are limited by the card pool available to them. Not am I particularly fond of Pendulum decks in general. However diversity is good for the game, and a lot of players do enjoy the Pendulum mechanic. For which reason I think they should try to find ways to bring Pendulums back into the game, just to make more fans happy. If it would help assuage the fears of the Pendulum-haters, there's always the option of making dedicated anti-support as a hard counter to Pendulum strategies. That's probably the route that would make Konami the most money; you'd have tons of tournament players queing up to buy the new stuff, just to make sure they're prepared for the possible appearance of a Pendulum deck.

If the real reason Konami doesn't like Pendulums is the height of the ceiling on what they can do (big if), the most sensible thing would be to include like a half-dozen different archetype-locked Heavmetalfoes Electrumite clones in one single "Pendulums are back!" set.

  • @HunterStiles651

    @HunterStiles651

Honestly, Electrumite would be fine at 1 and anyone who says otherwise doesn't have their head on straight. Electrumite never amounted to much of anything at 1. Astrograph ban + Electrumite to 1 was enough to kill Pend Mages outright and with 1 Electrumite, Endymion could generously be classified as Tier 2. Now, if we get a new Pendulum archetype that could do things on par with full power Pend Mages with just 1 Electrumite, then yeah I'd be the first to say Electrumite should be banned. But that's speaking purely in hypotheticals. I somewhat doubt even PePe could pull that off in MR5.

This. I think that they are extra reluctant about anything Pendulum related because of how easily it can break the game if you are not careful with it (think Pepe), so they'd rather be extra punitive against the mechanic than too lenient. There was Nekroz for Rituals, Glad Beasts for Fusions, TeleDAD for Synchros, Zoodiac for Xyz, and SPYral for Links. Meanwhile, Pends in general were consistently underperforming compared to other mechanics all throughout MR3. There were just 4 Tier 1+ Pendulum decks during the *entire* MR3 era, and one wasn't even really played as a Pendulum deck (talking about Qli).

Pepe is just the closest a deck has been to utilizing the mechanic to it's full extent, it can even potentially go higher than that still and they know it, that's why you can clearly see how each Pendulum archetype barely even scratches the surface on how to use the mechanic, because if they did truly use it, it could be a lot of trouble, Pepe is simply the only deck that actually used the scales as more than just a backrow that could potentially summon monsters

Oh boy, this one's going to be interesting. If you ask me personally, I'm not sure if it's hate or sheer lazyness from the TCG. On one hand, the OCG has been releasing new Pendulum cards, either new strategies or support for some older ones, so they clearly haven't given up on it and have the intention of trying new things. On the other hand, the TCG gives the impression it just doesn't want to bother with anything besides that one time they included Dinomist in the poll from last year. Otherwise their business consists of the usual 2017 stalefest love among other things. I feel like Pendulum has a lot of interesting design aspects that Konami could play around with. For example, one of these could be their toolbox ability of being both a monster and a spell, that way they could help archetypes in interesting ways while not necessarily being pendulum centric strategies. MR4 obviously screwed the mechanic hard, to the point they half assed support to keep it alive through the era or just left it aside with some bones thrown from time to time. Just recently with Endymion and Doremichord they've been trying a new spin with the mechanic, one of them turned out great while the other isn't great. Doremichord don't really have a wincon of their own as it stands imo. As long as the MR4 restriction exists, any Pendulum deck is literally playing with 3 cards in hand, unless the scales do things on their own, contrary to most other decks. But hey, at the end of the day it's not like they care too much about us, as long as we pay :)

To your second point cards like that already exist in the database. To name a few, Metaphys Decoy Dragon, Chaos Emperor the Dragon of Armageddon, and the new Antagonistic Intelligence ME-PSY-YA serve distinct purposes. Hence, there was at least some approach that Konami undertook to solve the pendulum problem and it could be extended further for other decks if it is seen as applicable. The only gripe I have with this is with a card like Metaphys Decoy Dragon. When it gets destroyed, you don't get value for bringing it back on the field and it permanently stays in the extra deck. This is a notable instance where card design doesn't mesh well with the strategy in terms of recursion. In the meantime, let's just hope for good card design and a safe return of pendulums back in the metagame.

  • @jasperjavillo686

I think an interesting fix for pendulums would be a Continuous Spell that removes the MR4 restriction put on Pendulums. By sacrificing 3 S/T Zones, a pendulum player can make use of all 6 Monster Zones at their disposal for a mass Pendulum Summon. It would be an interesting balancing act, choosing between having useable Monster Zones or more vacant S/T Zones.

@@nkyfong The way I see it, what made Pendulums so broken early on was how oppressive their field presence could be. Because they go to the Extra Deck when destroyed, it’s much easier to revive them than any other Monster from the Graveyard. Couple that with dedicates Pendulum Zones and a Pendulum Deck could have 5 Monsters and 7 back row. These flaws were addressed with MR4, but it crippled the mechanic with how the Extra Monster Zone operated, make those Extra Deck Pendulum Monsters harder to revive than a other Monsters since they needed to be summoned to a Linked Monster Zone. I don’t think Konami will be removing that restriction soon since easily recyclable resources are the Pendulum mechanic’s greatest strength. Putting that strength behind a gate, be it Link Monsters or a Continuous Spell, is really the only way to balance the mechanic, and I’d personally prefer to sacrifice a S/T Zone over occupying several Monster Zones with Link Monster to only revive at most 4 Pendulum Monsters.

I've thought about that but I'm not sure what you could really do. First of all, most of their effects are pretty shitty, with normal effect monsters that don't take jumping through hoops to use being better. If you give them a field/continuous spell that automatically turns on all Gemini effects on field, then you lose to one MST, and you can't play if you don't see your one card or terraforming/metaverse/set rotation. You'd have to have really, REALLY busted effects to make them worth it, like say a monster that lets you draw 3 once per turn if it's gemini summoned, or one that's an omni negate with some protection, considering the amount of effort they take.

I don't think Gemini needs rebooting. It has so much support that if you get an archetype that takes advantage of its good points, they'll explode in a way that could wreck a meta. They're normal on the field (until Gemini summon) and in the GY, making a lot of normal support live, and they still count as effect monsters in the hand. This means they could take full advantage by creating a Gemini archetype that is full of hand effects and support cards that can do something like giant ballpark (send monsters from deck to GY on a trigger and extra effects happen if those monsters are normal)

I'm a massive Pendulum fan, I was gonna write an essay but there's too many things to say I don't even know where to start. The recent reveal of generic Pendulum support with the Doremichord Link and Pendulum Treasure has given me some hope that Konami realised they did us dirty and hopefully will try to make Pends viable again. However, I also think it pretty much confirms that Electrumite is not coming back anytime soon, seeing as A she wasn't unbanned for the Metalfoes support and B they made another generic Link monster and split up her effects across multiple cards. Honestly Electrumite imo is the key to modern Pendulum decks as long as MR5 exists and I genuinely don't think Pends would be broken if she were to be limited, seeing as Pendulum decks have to commit a lot more resources to get their plays going and also cannot afford to play a lot of non-engine cards such as handtraps and staple cards. Oh wow turns out I still ended up writing an essay lol. Please Konami just do something for Pendulums, we have suffered long enough, undeservingly!

Even with Electrumite at 1, the best available Pendulum decks to play still rely on trying to get two Pendulum monsters on the field without going into their Pendulum Summon. There are so many outs to this happening as well as stopping Electrumite's effect from going off on Turn 1. As it stands, Pendulum needs the perfect hand, an insane amount of draw power, and committing to two Continuous Spells to really go off. With blowouts like Super Poly, Dark Ruler, and Nibiru making their way to the main decks alongside strategies that have such small cores and 1-card starters that they can afford to main deck handtraps like Droll, Ash, Gamma, and DD Crow while Pendulums *can't*, it's wild to think that keeping a card banned that still needs a ton of resources to go into it just to make sure the deck is even more unplayable than it is somehow comes across as fair. Another comment made a point that every mechanic has had a deck abuse it to the point they were a Tier 0 deck. Pendulum is the only strategy of these that was entirely murdered for the sins of one deck, like, five years ago or something. I love the Pendulum mechanic and it's upsetting that it's just not allowed to really go off here in the TCG.

Pendulum monsters in my opinion should of been support for normal monsters as pendulum monsters should of been a normal monster and spell card. You can either summon or use it's spell effect but you must discard that card in order to activate it. The card can be easily retracted from the grave to support Pendulum or Normal monsters on the field. It might not be the greatest mechanic in the game but at least it would of been used in casual and competitive play and not as much text in the card but we will never really know.

Not sure how many people play qliphorts nowadays with or without their link in it or any link monster that works in their deck, but its doable. But my point is if they don't wanna bring electrumite back then they should at least give some other decks a archetypal link so they can use it with them to possibly be playable again. Heck you think we would have gotten a odd-eyes or performapal link monster by now but we haven't. I'd say the "hate" derived from when mr4 started and the fact that links were barely represented competitively in its beginning. It took until Salad's structure deck for links to be competitively represented in its purest form and before all that, the top cut consisted of Spyral which got emergency banned a week later, Trickstars which didn't even link for its main strategy, true draco that didn't even have an extra deck and then there was pendulums(along with a few rogue options) that comboed with the handful of good non world-legacy lore link monsters they got and that was it. Then they banned astrograph and double iris, they became a tier 3 deck and then the Endymion structure came and brought them up to rogue overnight.

I think the issues with Pendulum are fairly obvious. Firstly, a lot of players, especially casual players, had a bad reaction. Worse than any other new mechanic. Probably for how different the mechanic is. There's a reason people pointed to stuff like Endymion or Nirvana High Paladin as "the problem with modern Yugioh" and it may not be a great reason but it is a reason. That combines with probably the rather lackluster lineup of Pendulum archetypes. In part because due to them being main deck cards in addition to the anime story meant that for the first time in the game, the packs didn't centralize around the new mechanics like Archetypes in GX (GX is Fusion focused but the key change it made was archetypes- Cyber Dragon, Hero, GladBeast, Lightsworn, etc), Synchro in 5Ds, Xyz in Zexal and Links in Vrains. A lot of people warm up to mechanics as they use them, but Pendulum didn't "force" them to play Pendulum. The issue with Electrumite about how it homogenized Pendulum decks is another big point. Like even Mr. Pendulum looked at Doremichord not for what they were doing but more just "how well could they make Electrumite if it got unbanned?" No mechanic should ever centralize around a single deck, let alone a single card. I think Konami if they want to revive Pendulum just needs to print good new archetypes. Ritual is somewhat similar to Pendulum but the mechanic has never really been "as" dead as Pendulum is simply because Rituals get occasional new good archetypes. And Rituals don't centralize on making a single card or all needing to play a certain engine - they absolutely can, with stuff like Impcantation and Djinns, but Ritual decks all have a more defined identity than "how fast can they go into Electrumite" like Pend became.

Big vent here: As someone who was sceptical about the mechanic at first, but ended up finding the mechanic really fun and interesting: I think it's ridiculous that Konami (TCG for the mostpart) are constantly trying to leave it in the dirt and screw it over at every turn. You can't get rid of it, it's fully solidified in the game and, as long as there's no set rotation or hard reboot to the game, it always will be. But no matter how many new cards or archetypes they make, it won't make pend playable as a mechanic because it's just so inherently constrained by the current master rules. It was pretty depressing to be at the ready to take cards out of my deck literally every time they dropped a banlist during MR3, because we all knew another pend card was gonna bite the bullet, whether it deserved it or not. What was most irritating with the whole PePe situation was that, while it was undoubtedly a disgustingly strong deck, there have been plenty of decks since that rivalled PePe in how ridiculous they were, but got a slap on the wrist by comparison the the utter nuke they took to PePe. The thing that hurt the most about MR4 and Electrumite was that it changed the way pend decks were built. In MR3 they were far more archetypal, with some added splashable engines for consistency and extension, but MR4 and Electrumite caused pend decks to throw in as many splashable engines as possible to make Electrumite ASAP, because konami had screwed over the mechanic so much that it just couldn't function in any other way, and I really hate that. Would be really nice to go back to archetypal pend decks again, but konami will never allow that as long as they keep screwing over the mechanic and giving us all this pack-filler nonsense support.

It actually worked insanely well in master rule 3, but moving the scales to the back row made the deck basically unplayable. And it kinda did the same thing to metalfoe/yang zings. It's less important than with the crystal beasts, but taking up 2 zones that could otherwise go to something like 9 pillars or creation just really sucks. Also, pendulum scraps were a thing in the early days. Same with gadgets.

I heard from someone that read an article from an Konami employee that mentioned the mechanic were mean't to support non-Pendulum decks. As we experienced, that didn't happen as much in getting the point across which escalated when we went through Pepe and Pend Magician. OCG went through a lot of changes so that Pendulums can come back and wouldn't be a big threat while TCG is frightened to bring back some of the support cards off of the banlist since the meta is very different as combo decks roams around instead of having control decks take over.

Gonna ramble. Don't really have an organized thought process for this. I think pendulums present a problem for getting new players into the game mostly. Someone who doesn't know how the mechanic works looks at a pendulum card and it basically confirms to them all the reasons they were wary about playing the game in the first place. Show a new player Endymion and their response will often be to think that the game is way too complicated for them to easily learn (which is a larger problem than just pendulums.) Maybe it's a visual design problem. Pendulums only have 2 non-pendulum pieces of information on them (scales and pend effects) but Yugioh cards already have a lot of information you have to take in. The more info you put on a card, the less readable the design is. I don't know. It's not as complex a mechanic as it seems, but if you don't know what you can mostly ignore on the card, then it's just an info overload. It takes some of people's biggest complaints with the game and amplifies them.

I think from the beginning Pendulums just needed to be more universal. Like, when you play pens it’s just pens, they’re not super splash-able and they’re not super receptive to non-pen cards. The other summoning mechanics have enough generics to be used by just about any deck, but pendulums only really play well when they’re in a deck designed around the mechanic. I can tech in a generic Xyz or Link or Sychro and it plays nice and helps me further my plays. There’s not really anything like that in pendulum.

Yeah that's true. Pendulum's main strength comes from the sheer perseverance of them. If they're destroyed they can just come right back, but in order to make that a viable strategy you had to run multiple pendulum cards for the scales and extra deck summoning. This was completely road-blocked in Master Rule 4 though. It was sort of okay at first since all of the summoning mechanics had the same problem, but then they go and remove the restrictions for everything but pendulum. Honestly I think pendulum could honestly make a triumphant return if they just focused on using it to bring out other extra deck monsters like it was supposed to be in the beginning. I mean sure it would allow for much more extra deck usage, but you would have to actually invest resources into setting it up creating a slow but steady build up effect.

I’ve never really been a fan of pendulum summoning, but I’m not a fan of konami completely abandoning a summoning type. Personally I think it should get more support, but nothing insane or broken and cards like eltromite should be placed at one or two. Also I’d love to see more synergy between all the summoning mechanics and pendulum summoning

I'ma be real with ya Paul, I'm a Pendulum player and the whole mechanic is honestly a really fun mechanic that I feel every single Yu-Gi-Oh! player should try out at least once before they knock it. Pendulums in general I feel could come back if the extra monster zone was instead called, "Link Zone" and Pendulums were no longer bound by the arrows. Not only that, but separate pendulum zones I feel like can and should return that way even without Electrumite we can pull off some insane plays. An idea for a video in case you want to do something for the main channel: Try Pendulums but without the restrictions above. Maybe we could as a playerbase experiment with how could we make Pendulums better, without making it broken.

Pendulums became my favourite type of deck to use for quite a while. I have binders full of D/D/D and odd eyes cards and invested some good money into great pendulum cards to bolster my decks. I really enjoyed playing pure odd-eyes even though it’s not meta competitive. Because of the bans and the general disregard from Konami on pendulums it’s now even almost impossible to play pendulums at a friendly level. You said something about Konami not wanting the decks to have “too many moving parts” and then you look at decks in the meta today and watch people play a regular monster deck like zoodiacs where a single turn can last 15 minutes of just comboing off into 4 XYZ monsters and a strong back row making an unbreakable board. You’ve got cards like nibiru which completely disrupts most pendulum deck combos. Pendulum decks are powerful, but in today’s meta pendulums certainly is not a broken mechanic by any means. I think pendulums were just the easiest targets to be a selling point for link monsters to become the new “thing” in yugioh.

I'm a newbie to the game, I understand the basics when I was a kid, but I only started playing seriously about 6 months ago. It was really interesting to me to learn about all the different mechanics in the game now, and when I finally understood Link Monsters I was kind of baffled. Coming from the perspective of Master Rules 2020, it was kind of insane to me to imagine that they would legitimately lock all their cards behind a single strategy like that for a few years? It felt like it was almost saying these things shouldn't be played or something. I knew Pendulums were really divisive at the time, but now I feel kinda bad because I want to learn how to play Pendulum decks and yet it feels like the bare minimum of learning how to make a Pendulum deck nowadays is exhausting...

I feel it's the most sloppily handled mechanic. So Konami doesn't want to visit it too much. The fact that part of MR4 was changing how this mechanic works, and Konami not even featuring it in Vrains. They're kinda like the opposite of rituals, where rituals need tons of broken support and free advantage to be viable, where as pendulum was always 1 search card, 1 one-card scale, 1 boss monster away from breaking the mechanic. The main drawback to it was it's inconsistency, which changed as soon they got relevant support. Soul charge every turn was always where the powercreep of pendulums was headed, which I think is more broken then any other mechanic, even Links. Nowadays I think they just want to forget it exists. Another thing is that I feel it's inherently hard to balance because of their complexity and the generic nature of a lot of their support. The nail in the coffin will be when Konami gets to the Arc-V era in Duel Links and doesn't even feature pendulums at all (wouldn't be surprised considering the nature of that game.)

I got back into yugioh when the D/D/D structure deck came out after not playing since the dawn of the synchro era which would have been like 6 months to a year before the MR4 update so as a previous pendulum player I would love to see Electrumite back at 1, it would allow Pendulum decks to see play again and by keeping things like Astrograph banned it keeps Pend Magicians in check, though the amount of hand traps we have now also keeps Pend Magicians in check, a timely negate and they're forced to pass the turn on a pathetic board that's easily broken I play Dinos now. Misc go BRRRRRR

I think the TCG (not konami) hates pendulums for some kind of ego thing. They hate that they did not have a say in its creation, they didn't have a say in it's nerfs and definitely don't have a say in the new cards design, thats why they hate it or at least that seems to me. Also, Pendulum hate has always been disproporcionated, yes PEPE was the strongest deck in the TCG like for two weeks. The ARC-V era was not about making the core mechanic the only thing you could play (something that did actually happend in the Zexal-Era and the Vrains era) but to make every mechanic have some kind of relevancy! First meta of ARC-V was focused on xyz and fusions! Then it was Qli, the first pendulum. Next meta we got Nekroz (tier zero), fusions and XYZ! Then Pepe got released, ban and the Tribute-summon, XYZ and Pendulums meta! What we got next? Oh right, Metalfoes, ABC, Blue-eyes and later DDD meta. Finally everything ended in a Zoodiac Meta. We only had a two weeks PENDULUM dominance! I still don't understand the hate and never will.

I think one reason it was pretty dispised by the time it reached its peak was because it kinda started getting to the point where if you didn't use Pendelum Cards, you were kinda playing yourself. Even in decks where they weren't necessary, if you could get your scales set up, you could lean into some insane combo plays that took next to no effort to pull off since you had free reign to summon pretty much everything in your hand cost free. I can understand why they needed to be rebalanced but I also agree that Konami kind of over compensated for it.

Fixing Pendulums in two easy steps: 1) ban every pendulum card 2) create a new format where players can only use pendulums In all seriousness, I don't really think there is a way to make good pendulum cards not broken. The inherent ability to summon as many as six monsters at once is always going to be insane in a game where most strategies rely on summoning as many monsters as possible to use for link material, xyz material, or synchro fodder. All of the good pendulum cards are amazing because they immediately pay for themselves and set up for more plays.

If Pendulums are suppose to be half monsters/half spells, why not make a format where you just get rid of the backrow? Use 5 monster spaces and 2 pendulum zones on the sides.

I feel like the only pendulums that work are the spell counter ones with the mythical endymion build. they don't need electrum to make plays, (sure it helps why wouldn't it) wince they can go to selene with link 3, usually with a servant summon and their normal summon. ( I often use garuda like this if it's the opening hand.) then you set scale and summon three from the extra deck. the other issue really iss that the end result monsters are usually all sorts of recursion and negation and floaters. my friend said it best I think. Pepe, Odd Eyes, Magicians, and Towers Turbo scared/pissed off a lot of older and newer players lol I remember playing against Pend end boards and just did not find it enjoyable to play against. Empty out the hand for nightmare level end boards full of negations, disruptions and recursion. Very fast and overwhelming until you learn the match ups and siding against them (Anti Spell Fragrance ftw]. Wasn't very a very enjoyable experience for me. I ended up quitting after shortly getting melted by Pend decks.

Pendulums really need more love from TCG Konami. Every other summoning method, even tribute summoning, has at least 1 competitively viable deck in this day of age yet pendulums basically have been nerfed into the ground to the point of only being casual decks at the best. Not even D/D/D decks are good at this point which is scary if you think about it. They really need to give some love to pendulums. Maybe after Dawn of Majesty as that's Yusei support.

When you have a card game that is 20 years old and countless expansions, you are bound to create so much complexity that it becomes overwhelming to manage. I think the only way out the the chaos would be to hard reboot the game and not to introduce the mechanic again. Duel Links and Rush Duels are exactly that. Duel Links might introduce it back (that would be funny to only run one active spell/trap slot) but Rush Duels definitely wont since the whole point of pendulums were to flood the field and well, you can already do that in that game with ease :P
