Why You Still Remember Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends Characters

Where many animated shows follow in the footsteps of inspiration, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends did the opposite. The best Foster's Home For Imaginary friends epsiodes all share one thing in common, masterful characters. Whether it was Blood, Wilt or Cheese, every character in the show mattered and contributed. Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends might have done one thing better than any other show of that era.

6:44 Eduardo had one of the most well-written backstories in the show. He was imagined to protect a small girl in a bad neighborhood from bullies, but, being imaginary, there wasn't anything he could actually do. However, the girl, unable to stand up for herself, is finally able to fight back on her own because she wants to protect her imaginary friend. So, even though he was imaginary and couldn't fight for her, he still gave her the strength to fight for herself.

I was an animator on seasons 3 and 4. I started out really liking Bloo, but by the end of my run I was so frustrated with him. He was so inconsiderate to others! I mean, that was the whole point of the character, but it's interesting that my appreciation of him would go so downhill over the course of a year and a half of animating him. Interesting tidbit: In the clip at the beginning where Eduardo was afraid of the "whisbee," we actually animated the whole thing with the word "Frisbee". Then the producers realized that was a trademarked term and they couldn't use it for legal reason, so they re-recorded the dialogue with the made-up name. I don't remember if we corrected the lipsync, so you might be able to see "F" mouths at the beginning of when anyone says "whisbee."

I appreciated the idea the show puts forward that some of the imaginary friends are replacements or stand ins for what people need to grow. Wilt was created to help teach & hone basketball skills. His mild manner would imply that he won't yell at you for making a mistake, but instead gently teach you what you did wrong. Heck, even Bloo, he's a Mac's baby blanket that Mac gave up to keep his brother from teasing him about it. Mac still needed/wanted his blanket, so he created a new one. But now his new security blanket can talk! And is able to voice all the witty comebacks he'd love to say!

Honestly, all the designs are amazing but I'll never forget this post by someone that worked on the show and got asked what ispired Coco's design. She was imagined by a little girl that was dying on an island after a plane crash. Her head is the palm she laid under waiting for her death, her beak is the deflated life boat she used to get to the island, her body is the remains of the plane and her feet are the little girl's - burnt from exposure. Her name comes from the coconuts of the palm tree. Literally changed my whole perception of a character I though was simple nonsense. Her creation was due to the little girl seeking comfort in her last moments.

One thing I didn’t realize, is that on the Foster’s movie, Good Wilt Hunting, Wilt’s creator was a stand-in for Michael Jordan. So he named his imaginary friend Wilt after Wilt Chamberlain, from the Harlem Globetrotters which is Michael Jordan’s favorite basketball player. Pretty cool imo.

Ehhh Ohhh I should rephrase what he said: Instead of doing more with the Flash program, they do the bare minimum and put it out for children to watch. And since some (not all) children don’t think about what they watch, they (the children) unintentionally encourage them to put out more cut-cornered animation tricks, cheaper art styles and it hurts to see happen in the animation industry.

All of your videos are well stated, thought-provoking, and heartfelt analyses of treasured relics from a past that has all too suddenly become long-left memories instead of the recent realities they used to be. Your revisit of their creation, impact, and value seed from a perspective that first loved them, and then sought to understand them. It's obvious that your appreciation for the artform goes much farther than the rest of us, and thus, I can only too quickly subscribe.
