Why You Still Remember The Genie So Well

Robin Williams is probably best remembered by his time as the genie in Aladdin. The original Aladdin is one of the greatest animated films of all time and a lot of this is due to the genie. Sure the songs are great, but what's most memorable is robin Williams performance. While Disney did a great job attempting to bring the movie back to life, there was no way they were topping the original. Aladdin is and will continue to be a classic and for good reason.

what's a real shame in hind sight of that is that Disney execs disobeyed the contract and when he was rightfully upset about it and refused to reprise his role, they got the voice of Homer Simpson for the sequel. Naturally it just wasn't the same. 😂

Maybe this is just me, but I feel that Mexican Voice Actors and Japanese seiyuus a way better than Americans's, I can still remember the voices giving to characters like Sherk and Woody in the dub versions more vividly that the original voices. I think that Americans are better for live action, also ever since I starter to compare the original Japanese ver. VS the English Dub, I feel like they are just been offensive. Of course the characters in Tales of Arcadia are a huge exception to the rule.

"The character has to live in the actor" That's a great quote, and as an actress, very true. People come to the show to see the characters, not the actors. I've been told "If you don't feel silly, you're doing it wrong." Acting is truly about becoming the character, but at the same time, doing it *your* way. There's always a little bit of the actor in the character and as the actor, it is your job to make the audience see the character and to entertain them

I tried to understand method acting recently because I practice “visualization” sessions to hone my mind, and I wanted to better understand where my characters were coming. But nothing clicked for me. I’m interested in personality theory and I’ve self-typed as an INTP. I know I need to develop my empathy, but I also recognize that empathy has to be intuitive. My brain just doesn’t work that way. But then I watched a KZread video where someone said that, in order to method act, you have to find the character within yourself - and it all clicked for me. The character I was trying to empathize with was a villain, and from the outside, they look like just a horrible person all the way around...but I remembered what a weird little outcast I was as a kid. How I craved to be noticed. How I wanted to be loved but I was too introverted and creatively minded to fit in...and I realized this character and I share a core. After that, when I did my “visualization” session, I didn’t have to pick “lines” for my character. My subconscious knew exactly what he would say - and it was kind of like lucid dreaming, but while you’re awake. I wonder how often we go through our lives failing to realize that everyone else is, more or less, facet of ourselves? Or a reflection of our own understanding of the emotions that result from the experience of life? How often do we mistakenly believe that people don’t think or feel the way we think and feel - because we label ourselves as “special”, when the results more often subscribe to “lonely”? How is it so hard to see that everyone else was more or less created using the same recipe - and you’re just different because the sprinkles on your cupcake are slightly to the left or something? I think everyone should learn method acting in grade school, when you’re simultaneously the most open-minded and the least socially connected. We would all be much, much happier for it.

Will Smith himself said that if he ever tried to just copy Robin's performance, it wouldn't work. Out of respect for Mr. Williams, they decided it was best to do something that was in line with what Will Smith himself would have done. That way it's more unique to his own performance. Regardless, Will had gigantic shoes to fill when he took up the role. I may not like the remakes in the slightest, but I don't blame him for not living up to expectations. WHO COULD?

@@RedFloyd469 I really liked Will as the Genie...if they were going to do a remake, he was a good choice because he's a good actor with a big following, and nothing like Robin. I think Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey are great and would have been funny, but it would have felt too much like they were trying to "copy" Williams. Not necessarily the actors, but Disney. I knew going in it was not going to be the same, and it wasn't, but I still enjoyed the remake. I like that it was the same, but also completely different. Of course, no one would ever be able to do the genie like Robin. We all knew that. I think Disney knew that. I think it was gutsy for them to remake the movie at all, but I'm glad they did. Its one of the better remakes I think.

And Robin Williams was one of those people who could connect with others. He befriended Koko, a gorilla who mourned him when he died. She heard his name on the radio and wanted to know what happened to her friend. Wouldn’t even cuddle her cat until she was told!

Robin Williams was the first celebrity death that ever effected me. As a teenager at the time I watched nearly everything he’d ever acted in, it changed my life. Now as an adult I still adore this man and still look to his work for inspiration.

There are actually two men who could really "do the genie": Robin Williams and Vesa-Matti Loiri. The latter is a famous Finnish comedian and the Finnish voice for the genie. With a special permission from Disney, Loiri only worked with mute animation and general idea of what the gags were about to produce his own unique version. Later Disney recognized the Finnish version as the best dubbed version of Aladdin. I know it will sound like blasphemy to anyone who does not speak Finnish (as it would for me if I didn't speak Finnish), but in Finland, it's generally recognized that Loiri accomplished the impossible: his version of the genie is superbly untouchable even compared to the otherwise-unsurpassed Williams. Even if you don't speak Finnish, you might be able to hear the difference in energy when you search for "aladdin friend like me finnish" on KZread.
