Why You Shouldn’t Go to the University of Washington

Ойын-сауық

Hi everyone! If you’re new to my channel, my name is Jessica, and I’m a second-year student at the University of Washington. It’s currently college decision season, and I recognize that a lot of people turn to KZread for advice, so I decided to make my own video stating all the reasons why you shouldn’t commit to UW. I will say that I feel that the pros outweigh the cons, and that is why I decided to attend this school. If you guys have any questions for me or have suggestions for future video ideas, feel free to write in the comment section down below. Congratulations if you just recently got accepted into UW, and if you didn’t, I hope this video makes you feel better about not going, haha.
Xoxo,
@jessicastarsinspace

    A lot of these points apply to a lot of universities across the US, not just UW, so you really can’t escape dealing with some of these things: pre-reqs, safety, professors, tuition etc.

    I am probably much older than most people commenting, but here is my experience. I graduated in the Fall of 2007 (It's a long story). I transferred to UW from the University of Heidelberg via Portland State University. I never took a course at PSU; I simply applied after completing two years of community college so that I could do a junior year abroad program at a university I'd dreamed of attending. Anyways, I applied to UW while attending the University of Heidelberg.I ended up at UW to finish the last year and a half of my B.A. I found UW to be absolutely incredible. The campus is positively beautiful. What I came away with after attending 5 quarters at UW was much more than I had expected. The curriculum was very rigorous, and it took hours of intense study every day (outside of school) simply to maintain a 3.6 GPA. All of that hard work paid off. I was fully prepared for what graduate school had waiting for me. I was very lucky and was admitted to Columbia University where I studied Applied Linguistics. The academic rigor at UW made my M.A. program at Columbia seem relatively easy in comparison. If you want to challenge yourself, become a DAWG!

    I attended PSU in 2005 as a student athlete. Hated the school and the athletics program. Went to community college for a couple years. Then life took me other directions. I’m now about to finish my bachelors degree at Georgetown University starting this August. Life is a fun journey as long as you make the best of it

    This is a very accurate video, came through a suggestion. I’m a senior at UW (not in a STEM major, though, I’m an English major), and this is a very well made video about the school - I may be doing something I’m passionate about (pursuing teaching) but there are some grating problems with this school. Institutions like UW are screwed bureaucratically on many levels, and the way you presented this info was great. Especially about expecting the worst in classes, this is true for all disciplines here.

    Really accurate stuff here. Especially about the STEM fields. When you take the Chem and Physics classes, be prepared that you are competing with all of the engineering and pre-med students. It's competitive. And pre-admit into Engineering doesn't mean into the engineering department of your choice. It just means one of them. You still need to compete to get into the top ones that are popular. It's tough but I don't know if its any easier at other schools that are well regarded for their STEM degrees.

And although I love my school and ive met a lot of my close friends here there are a lot of realizations from what you expect coming out of high school to what you actually experience when you get here. I also wanted to add a lot of the stem majors have the same prerequisites courses. So if you dont do well in one it could close the doors for a lot of other majors. A lot of the weed out classes work in this way.

    It's not the most disability friendly. The office for disabled students is located in a central area. Theoretically, that's great. In practice, there's no parking & if you have mobility issues you have to cross through other parking lots, buildings & green spaces to get there. I only went in twice as an undergrad. I really could have used help at times & they had resources I needed but couldn't access without a long, painful trip. They do have a van pick up if you want to call & wait for someo (I felt very uncomfortable w/ the guy I got the only time I tried it), and call & wait to leave. There was one class where my professor & I "played Romeo & Juliette". They were doing "routine" elevator maintenance at least once a week & I literally couldn't get to my class. I'd text, my professor would come to the 2nd story window & wave, marking me as present but I missed the class. It was a language requirement. I was struggling. I needed every minute in class I could get. I requested multiple times that they put off routine work until after classes, or at least not during hours when a wheelchair bound or mobility impaired student has classes. There aren't really so many that it would be hard to track. I could go on, but I don't want to ramble & overall I did enjoy my experience at UW.

    I am doing some research to help my son to decide if he should go to UW. He was placed on the waitlist, but got admitted last week as a pre-major in Arts & Sciences. He did not get admitted directly to the Foster School of Business. What is the acceptance rate for the business school for the standard admit? How many times can you apply to the same major? He is choosing between UW (possbably not getting into Foster) and other universities where he has been admitted directly to the business schools like Minnesota, Maryland and Purdue. We are from California and UW was a top target for out of state schools.

  • @jessicastarsinspace2563

    @jessicastarsinspace2563

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! First off, congratulations to your son for getting accepted into UW! According to their website, the Foster School of Business generally accepts between 30-50% of applicants. The admission team looks at: 40% combined GPA, 25% pre-application GPA, and 35% writing skills assessment, so that admission to the major is largely dependent on the student’s GPA. I am not exactly sure how many times a student can apply to the major, but from my understanding, admissions are offered twice a year (once in Autumn and once in Winter) and students just need to have declared a major by 105 credits earned and 5 quarters completed at UW. Again, I’m not sure if there’s a restriction as to how many times a student can apply to the business school, but it definitely allows more than 1 chance. For me, I really wanted to go to UW, and I did not even consider the competitive majors system when committing; however, I understand this may be a concern for some students and their parents. So if he wants to have the security and eliminate the stress of dealing with getting into a major, then picking another school might be a good option; however, if he really wants to go to UW, I think taking that chance would be worth it. Worst-case scenario: he can always transfer schools if Foster doesn’t work out. Hope that helped!

    Congratulations! HCDE has a 16% acceptance rate😅 and an average 46% of admitted students had to apply two or more times before getting accepted. So yes, it’s definitely not the easiest major to get into...but it’s not impossible by any means! The most important part of your HCDE application is your personal statement! They also look at your grades and grade trends (i.e. your grades should be going up each quarter you’re at the UW). You can read more about the HCDE application and program here: www.hcde.washington.edu/bs/admissions-faq. Hope that helped!

Admission is based on your GPA and essay, and the average LSJ GPA is a 3.6. So as long as you have a solid GPA and essay, you should be good to go! I’d also prefer to be undecided in the first year or two if possible… I haven’t been admitted to UDUB, I’m a high school senior. Is there like a “first choice second choice” system when applying? How many choices do you get? My thinking is that I can apply to the school of the environment, and try to transfer into environmental engineering if it suits me after a year. If I’m not admitted, I can just continue with the environmental majors at the school of the environment. Is this a sound plan? Thank you so much for the video, any advice would be appreciated!!

    Tough choice! Since both U of A and UW have great astronomy programs, I’d say it comes down to the other factors when choosing a college. For example, which school is cheaper? Which school has better resources for students? Which school has the clubs he wants to be involved in? I just posted a video today about UW’s pros in case your friend wants to check it out. • @jessicastarsinspace2563

    @jessicastarsinspace2563

    Hey Sinjini! UW is a great school for engineering. It is very well funded and has lots of great undergraduate research opportunities. Yes, the STEM programs at UW are very difficult (e.g. weed out classes, competitive culture, etc), but you will get conceptual understanding if you are committed to finding it. Sometimes there are things out of your control like who you will get as a teacher or the STEM prerequisite classes you have to take that you aren’t necessarily interested in, but I would say the pros of attending UW for engineering outweigh the cons.

    Thanks for your question! I’m not 100% positive, but I believe that the application deadlines are the same for international students as they are for those living in the US (so that would mean fall 2022 around November). International students must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score that meets UW’s minimum English proficiency requirement. You can also use your SAT or ACT score as an English proficiency alternative. Hope that helped and let me know if you have any more questions!

    I feel like this video is more, "Why You Shouldn't Go To College". Most of these things discussed here apply to most, if not all, universities. For instance when you acknowledge that the STEM fields that are hard to get into are some of the best in the nation, there's your reason right there why they are hard to get into. You have a lot more competition at UW than other, not-so-good schools. I know this is frustrating when you've been possibly looking forward to a very specific university and school for most of your life, and I can empathize. It's always good to do your research and have back-up schools in mind, especially if you want to go to a school that has a very low admission rate (which likely translates into a very high application rate). Keep pushing though, and don't lose sight of your dreams. Go Dawgs.

    It depends which part of the English major you plan on pursuing (there’s two options). The language and literature one is not competitive at all, but the creative writing one is somewhat competitive. You can read more about the requirements at this link: english.washington.edu/prospective-undergraduate-students. The communications major is highly capacity-constrained with an acceptance rate of less than 30% according to the Daily (UW’s student newspaper). Hope that helped!

At UMD, you could switch majors by simply declaring you want to, and my spouse has done this. He switched his major to CS twice! And in general, UW is so much less transparent about every aspect of everything than my alma mater (I took a few courses at UW, and so did my spouse, and I live up the street from the university). I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Seattle U is pretty expensive, so I don’t think out of state students save a lot of money by going there. I don’t know much about Seattle U to judge whether or not it’d be good for STEM, but smaller class sizes and easier to get classes does sound appealing. I personally haven’t had serious trouble with getting into my classes even though I’m a STEM major, so I don’t think that’s the main reason for why people don’t graduate in four years. Vena had a great response! To add, being involved in extracurricular activities is very important, but it’s also just as important to show your passion for them and the amount of time you’ve been a part of them. For example, joining a random club your senior year just so you can put it on your application in time is not going to impress the admissions team. My biggest recommendation is to show how passionate you are about what you want to do and make the admissions team think, “Wow, we definitely need this student at our school.” Vena mentioned a 3.5 GPA, but I’d recommend aiming higher than that because a lot of other students at the UW that got in had higher GPAs. For example, I had a 4.3 GPA in high school. I know a lot of people at UW who didn’t have the highest GPA though, so don’t stress about it too much. I’d say just try to aim for higher than a 3.5 to increase your chances of admission. To wrap up, I’d say the most important part of your application is your personal statement, and my biggest recommendations are to make it personal (obviously haha), show your passion, and get your draft peer-reviewed. Hope that helped!

From what I’ve heard, the major has become increasingly competitive over the years, but nothing too extreme. According to the major’s website, this is exactly what the admissions team is looking for: overall academic record, grades in relevant coursework, selection of and preparation for the appropriate Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science path, ability to make satisfactory progress towards the degree, understanding of and potential fit with the major as demonstrated in the short answer questions. Hey Shreya! First off…CONGRATULATIONS! I’M SO PROUD OF YOU :’) Can’t wait to hopefully see you at UW next year! Here’s what my roommate in the public health major said, “They don’t list the acceptance rate, but every year, there are more and more applicants. They are admitting more people, but it’s still pretty competitive. My advice is to get the pre-reqs done and keep your GPA up. Also, outside of school, try to find experiences that enhance your understanding of public health or help to solidify your passion for public health. These are the things that will help you in your personal statements and make you stand out as a good applicant. At the end of the day, they’re looking for the people who will be successful in the major and as graduates/alumni.” So based on what she said, I think you’ll be just fine applying and getting accepted into the public health major :) Hope that helps! I just assumed it wouldn’t be that crazy there since it doesn’t have a super high population in comparison to some of the other states. Interesting! Is there anything you like about Alaska? I’m trying to research a bunch of different places because I’ll be moving out of Washington after next year, and I’m trying to decide where to. Who do you think is best fit to live in Alaska and what are the reasons for moving there?

    @@jessicastarsinspace2563 There are a lot of amazing things about Alaska. The cities are generally smaller than ones I've seen in Washington. The towns are a lot smaller but can have a warm community feeling. There are definitely a lot of sights to see. If you like peace and quiet then there are plenty of places here where you can find that. Typically the kind of person to live here would be okay with some amount of outdoors activities as in the smaller towns its a lot harder to find things to indoors. Definitely Google some cities or towns depending on how big you want the area you are living in to be. I also wonder how it is in the cities in Washington? Or other places that are nice to live that maybe are slightly outside of the cities.

    Hi! The psychology major at UW is moderately competitive because they are capacity-constrained, but not extremely competitive. Admission decisions are based on cumulative GPA in Psych 101, 202, and 209. You can read more about it on UW’s Department of Psychology website. Hope that helps!

  • @jessicastarsinspace2563

    @jessicastarsinspace2563

    I wouldn’t say those are weed out classes, but you should aim to get a good GPA in both of those courses since the psychology admissions team looks at that to determine your acceptance/rejection into the major.

    I graduated from UW in 2017. Bioengineering is a very competitive major. You basically need 4.0 (or at least 3.8) on every course during freshman and sophomore year to apply for that major. Good luck.

  • @jeffg6924

    Passion does not equate to qualification. Schools will go after the most probable students to graduate from the majors they are applying. Most engineering programs have an 80% attrition rate, so schools should be selective. Jessica does not seem like the sharpest crayon in the box, unlikely to pass an interview with me, so I understand what the professor's frustrations. Blaming the professor for not knowing what's happening is a class shows a great deal of arrogance without the competence. She gives the vibe of a spoiled brat, blaming the system for her failures.

Olympic athletes, football players and special cases can defer hard classes. As far as major selection goes, you don't need to pick a major until year 3. So there is a lot of flexibility to mix and match classes. The only tuffy is to graduate with a BSc not a BA , there is a 101 class in CS that must be passed. Some athletes push this till year 4 or graduate with BA, but at Stanford a BSc has more majors that are valued higher.
