Why You Need To Put In 10,000 Hours

In my book "Mastery," I argue that you need to put in the work to be successful. The best way to get there is to put in 10,000 hours on your way to success.

    The 10k hours is for people who are at the top of their field in very competitive fields. I've never been too concerned about mastery in a single subject so I focused mostly on competence. There is an optimal point in terms of time where more practice, training, experience, or whatever isn't going to increase the overall skill level much and will decrease as time goes on. It would take a person roughly 5 years of 40 hours a week to reach 10k hours but if you pick literally almost any subject a person could easily become competent in that subject in some fraction of that time. I could realistically become extremely competent, but not a master, in 5 different complex subjects over that same 5 year period. When I say competent I mean good enough that others would pay me to do that thing and I could live off of the money. *edit* fixed my silly math error

  • @martin1blade

    @martin1blade

    Жыл бұрын

    Not to dismiss your point but your math is wrong. 10k hours over 8 years is 1250 hours a year which is slightly more than 24.038 hours a week. By all means, strive for competence first before mastery, but even 10k hours over 10 years is only 19.23 hours a week. It all comes down to how badly do you want to be better than simply a base level of competency at whatever you are trying to achieve.

  • @crypticnomad

    @crypticnomad

    @@martin1blade Well that is hilarious and embarrassing Here is how I came up with those numbers 10,000/40 hour weeks=250 250/12 = 20.83 I was obviously wrong to use 12 weeks in a year. Using 52 comes out to 4.8 which makes a lot more sense. My point still stands but is 1/4th of the point if considering ~5 years instead of 20

    Deliberate practice hours predicted 26% of the skill variation in games such as chess, 21% for music, and 18% for sports. This is the second biggest flaw of the 10,000 Rule: It leads to a misconception that anyone can become an expert in a given area by putting in the time. research shows. The 10,000 hour rule is wrong. Put differently: For any skill you're trying to master, you can become extremely proficient in much less time than Gladwell suggests. i like you Robert but we shouldnt spread misconception.
