Same here. Sometimes though I think to myself "Is there any real value to this particular video?" and on most occasions the answer is "No". Just the avoidance of facing the reality that if I wasn't watching it then I'd be left with my life and my own thoughts. I guess I just need to do that and then fill my life with actual content and constructive activities.

What I did is to create 2 YT accounts, one for how to's or videos with real value (like this one, for example) and another account for entertainment. This helps me to control what I am consuming, and be consciuous if I am really learning, or I am just having fun

My paranoia has kept me safe from this "notification addiction" that seems to be so rampant, right now. See, every time I want to access my phone, I have to take the bag off of it that is for muffling the microphone and blocking the cameras. So, I never got hooked. Too many steps in between. So, it's a GPS, phone and mail notifier, mostly. I can't keep friendships on there and that's good. They're not fucking real! You can't shake their hand. They are not real. Get real friends.

Michael Jones this is true. I often find that my recommended section determines my mood and my productivity. When it is filled with games channels after watching a few, I get even more addicted to watching them and then have to try extra hard to change my recommended to something else. It is the same reversed, when it’s filled with videos like this one here (which it is now). I feel somewhat inspired and motivated, with an aspiring sense of self worth and belief. From a psychological point of view, it is very very interesting. (I might also add, like someone already has in this thread, I haven’t had social media in almost 3 years and I have got so much time back and can only recommend it to everyone!)

@@blackbat121 The brain requires retraining. You will feel the effects of not using social media for a while because it's something you've done for a very long time and it's become your source of pleasure. We are hardwired to seek pleasure and when we use social media, our brain makes this connection between pleasure and social media, so it will make you feel uncomfortable and send you urges to get another hit of dopamine to scratch that itch so to speak. Hence why when we feel nervous or irritable, our instinctive reaction is to pick up our phones and pointlessly scroll through SM. We need to show our brain that we don't need social media as a source of pleasure. This can be done by allowing the intense energy of the urge to be there whilst we resist/refrain from acting on that urge and finding something else more productive to do with our time. I call it the acceptance and replacement strategy. This may not work for every single person but it certainly has been working for me... so far :)

  • @ShaneHummus

True, my productivity drop because I always check my phone or social media. It took me time to cut it away and focus on my things to produce more results. It's okay to check your phone, but too much exposure on it is not good.

People get really annoyed with me because of this, but I actually turned off both the ringer and the vibration on my phone. I was perfectly fine not knowing the exact moment I got a notification, and if somebody called me, they would leave a message if it was important. I recently got a Fitbit, though, and one feature I wasn’t aware of was that it tells me when I get a call or a message. Still, I don’t mind it, because it’s easy to ignore, I can read the message on the Fitbit, and my friends are a lot happier that I actually know when they message me now.

Thank you so much for this video. It made me delete Instagram which I used to watch people sharing their life/photo’s/stories I am not even interested in 😂. The people I am interested in I can call or text. It made me feel much better to not be on Instagram which is full of perfect life’s and makes me compare myself to that which is truly toxic. The two questions in your video made me realize all of this. So big thanks again and looking forward to watch all of your videos. You are doing such a great job! 🙏🏼

I've been wavering my screentime over the last year and notice that it's more difficult to keep in touch with some people who "socialize" more online than they do in person. It's led to less people in my life, which I'm happy with! Social media lets us think we have all of this camaraderie with people that mutually interact with us when we may not even be able to hold a significant conversation with them in person. As always, thank you for sharing your findings and insights with us!

However, learning an instrument is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Which is why I've learned five lol.

One more helpful thing besides stripping down the number of social media accounts you have is, switching off notifications for all the remaining apps.
