@@priyasharmax it is a weird thing, I’m glad you have made me aware of this. I remember watching videos as a younger boy on KZread almost every day. I always felt a resistance to posting my own intellectual thoughts onto a public platform for everyone else to see, but now I make three or four comments a day and realize how comfortable it is for me now. It was a slow progression, but not something I could naturally acclimate myself to overnight. I am naturally very unsocial and restrictive when opening up to people, but the real problem may be that I am alienating myself from the fact that there are no repercussions and I can easily distance myself from scrutiny or judgement from these “online users” who cannot identify me. It’s being synthetically social almost to the point where it validates your absence from the real world making it seem unnecessary to have the necessary and fundamental human interaction and accept automated robots with predictable behavior/action that create no mental resistance. Perhaps this is why younger generations or more accepting of this movement. I do not know, but I thank you for making the progression of my social presence aware to me.

I wished I heard this when I was 20. Every time I get into a relationship, I get too engrossed in it that I just forget about myself. When I'm out of it I was left empty. No motivation to live even. It hits me recently like why am I like this? Why am i so down and depressed when I'm alone but so "happy" when I'm with someone. I started to reflect on myself that maybe its the way I run away from thinking about life. My way of doing it is finding someone to focus on. and give my all to them. When I don't have that person I felt empty and I don't do anything about my life. I'm 25 right now and I'm starting to reset/ restart my brain to focus on myself and invest on myself more. I'm writing this here for whoever felt it might relate to them and for myself. It's never too late to start but will always be too late if you didn't. Good luck dear self. It’s weird that I found this video after already figuring this out for myself lol. I have social anxiety and recently figured that I wasn’t going to improve by staying in my house all day. So I began making my self really uncomfortable. I went to a youth group with people I didn’t know, went for a walk with a friend I wasn’t close to (this was a big step for me as I was scared how to keep the conversation going, but in the end it went great), and started looking up from the floor when in a public space. I’m getting bette slowly and more natural at conversations. EDIT: so it’s 7 months later, and I want to tell you guys leaving your comfort zone is the BEST thing you can do. I went from avoiding going to the store until night time when it was less busy, not hanging out with anyone, not being able to order my own food or go to the cashier by myself, always looking down in public, to having multiple friends who I hang out with without fear, going into stores whenever and easily going to the cashier by myself, ordering my own food, being able to keep conversations going well, and overall my social anxiety has gone down so much! That friend I didn’t know well that I talked about in my original paragraph, We’re now super close and hang out all the time! And it all happened because I took that step out of my comfort zone, made myself uncomfortable. If I had stayed in my comfort zone and said no to that friends request to hang out, we never would’ve had the friendship we have now.

I’m slowly learning how to have a conversation with people and being less scared to hang out with others. I do feel a bit bad but I learned to never be afraid to say "no." My aunt understands how and why I feel the way I do so she said I could stay in the resort hotel. But even that feels stupid. Im at Disney and I just stay in the hotel? It kinda defeats the purpose. Besides I think I suffer from FOMO--Fear Of Missing Out.

I would challenge your 2-zone theory as a psychology student and suggest 3 zones- 1: inside the comfort zone 2: the challenge zone which is outside the comfort zone and the area where people can learn and grow the most 3: the panic zone which is essentially where you get so uncomfortable that it turns into panic and you shut down. This is because pushing yourself too much, too hard, too fast can result in mental issues and stunt your ability to learn or grow. There is a balance that must be reached. Challenge yourself outside your comfort zone but before your panic zone. If a goal of yours is currently in the panic zone, start with smaller related things in your challenge zone. Eventually, you will become comfortable with those, allowing the final goal to be less intimidating and shift from the panic zone to the challenge zone over time.

ACR_master Just find things to do which are outside. Like if you stay inside a lot. Go out, my comfort zone is inside. But I like to go to gym and go skating with friends. I agree with this too, being outside your comfort zone 24/7 is not something I want to do and can lead to things which I frown upon. (Getting drunk and partying). Start running/jogging every over day, walk outside in a forest or even chat to random people (I find it awfully hard to do this). Even if it’s a cashier or bar tender. On the flip side, if you’re extroverted. Isolate yourself for a little bit, pick up a book to read or learn a language. I read before bed as it makes me drift into sleep faster. I’m also learning espanto as a first language then to move to Latin. Edit: I’ll give you an example, I was going to university back in September and enjoyed the first week or so. But after that it became a chore. I was hating it to a point where I was getting down and my family noticed. I was outside of my comfort zone every day it made me hate my life. It came down to I’d get a degree, but would hate every moment of it, whilst getting into massive debt. As I said I dislike partying and getting drunk, that is what half of uni is. I chose to leave and I feel so good. I study at the open uni. Studying is outside of my comfort zone, but I have time for a job and hobbies. At the end of the day, as he said. Do it in moderation. Get into healthy habits, clean you room, get a hobby and make sure to enjoy your life.

This is something I've always pondered on, and I used to think it was related to some obsession with "self-perfection", but thanks to this video I can connect the dots and rationalise why it is that I feel so much resistance to become my "best self". I think the bottom line is life is hard, and being the person you want to be, with the values you want to have takes time and perseverance but this is the essence of living. We can't beat ourselves up for every small decision we make and gauge it on whether or not its bringing us closer or further from our "best self", but rather to reframe this mindset into whether it aligns with who we want to be, and instead of punishing looking for opportunities to break the cycle next time. Often we associate "being outside the comfort zone" with intense feelings of stress (for those who suffer from anxiety) but the longer we give in and stay inside our comforts, the harder it becomes to branch out and try new things. I really noticed this being unemployed for a few months and it felt like the longer I was unemployed the more anxiety built up around returning to work, but when I eventually did, it was fine! The harder we push ourselves outside our boundaries the greater potential we have to be whatever we want.

This is all so true! For me, after not having a job for a while, other tasks that required any sort of mental exertion started to feel more tedious, because I was getting used to the stagnation of not being challenged or motivated. However, I’ve been working out for so long, that working out is within my comfort zone, so I started using working out as a stall tactic to push out other responsibilities. I am glad I took a repose from having a job to focus on my mental health, and to find a job that better suited me and aligned with my values - but not being employed for too long of a time span becomes counter productive, makes you feel lazy, and “shrinks” your comfort zone.

Things that have helped me. 1. Foreign solo travel. No one you know is there to judge you. You can be whoever you want to be. 2. Competitive athletics. Weightlifting, powerlifting, climbing, crossfit, marathon, etc. You will learn to embrace discomfort and discipline. 3. Fasting. Turns out that you really are eating too much too often. Break your addiction to food and improve your health. 4. Get on a sleep schedule. This may not seem like it belongs in this list, but it does. Social jetlag on the weekend and bad sleep habits destroy your productivity and drive. 5. Public speaking. Don't speak on autopilot. Be vigilant and conscious of your bad speaking habits and actively self correct them. Be knowledgeable and practice often, and you will improve like any other skill.

Love these points. Of course you're not trying to say that you should do all this at once, they all have their own challenges. Fasting is a really great way to realize that we're obese from consuming anything from social media, to food, to anything else that seek our attention. Fasting doesn't apply to everyone, such as those with an eating disorder, but I do believe that it's a good way for us to be more grateful for the life that we have and the discipline we need to put on ourselves.

Idk, maybe you didn't achieve some goals you wanted to. Or you bother: "Why do I move to my goals so slow?" It's ok. Just try to make conclusions, to think why you failed, to see your mistakes. 4:19 - That's because of dopamine. If you do things that give a lot of dopamine, (instant gratification) your will to actually go do things that are more difficult or even similarly provide dopamine decrease exponentially. I forget what the book or video was called, but it gave the example of masturbation; if you're constantly masturbating for your own pleasure, your want or need to go talk to a girl or ask her out decreases, because you can get dopamine easier, when you want, by yourself. Same goes for Social Media, Video Games, Browsing Online, Eating, etc. But you can detox your dopamine levels and balance them back out by doing things that may not provide a lot or any dopamine, like Meditation, Reading, Exercise, studying or learning, doing a productive hobby, etc. Gradually they will provide more and more dopamine to the point where you can stop those self destructive dopamine highs (or at least be conscious that its not a good idea to game for 12 hours straight every day) Its literally a drug your brain makes, and instant gratification destroys our will to do anything productive. Its why the entertainment industry makes so much money.

Although that coping style is effective for you it still relies on symptom relieve and is therefore not going to bring a solution to it's origin. If you keep on suffering from anxiety (or any mental health issue for that matter) you should see a psychologist and do accurate diagnostics to the factors that contribute towards your anxiety. E.g. for a lot of people childhood trauma is a contributing factor. Everytime you feel anxious you go running/meditating, but that does not relieve you from that trauma.

However, you're totally right that things like running and meditation alone aren't enough for everything and that one should go to a psychiatrist, especially for deeper issues. Medicine may also be best for some.

I don't agree with framing it as a "comfort zone", because all the comfort zone is, is having a particular set of ideals, which are currently being met. If you're happy living in that bubble, because that's your preference, then your ideal is met, and nothing else really matters. But if some part of your current situation makes you unhappy - maybe because you've simply gotten bored of it - and you feel that making changes is too much effort, I agree with your solution. You need to understand what your goal is, and consciously force yourself to get there. When you're there, you'll be comfortable again. Until you're not.

this is so true a lot of the "get out of your comfort zone gang" are always pushing people further and further but the problem is where are they pushing us and to what objective ? what's the point the of doing something that you dont even care about juste for the sake of getting outside the comfort zone ?

I think I agree to that. My "comfort zone" sadly is shrinked to my bed most of the time so I think for me its working fine to have that way of thinking

@@hamzix6599 That's kinda missing the point - and I do think the guy in the video did address this indirectly with "value-based decisions". If something means something to you, like getting better grades or a better body for example, but your comfort zone denies you from doing it because studying/working out feels uncomfortable - then that is what getting out of your comfort zone will fix. He isn't telling you to, for instance, go skydiving to get out of your comfort zone. If you believe doing that isn't worth your time (excluding the process of getting there ofc), then obviously don't do it. *TL;DR* - He's telling you to work hard to eventually warm up to and do the things that matter to you, not to just get out of your comfort zone for the sake of it.

It's already very hard to find out what you really want.... I think the moment you know what you want you are able to achieve it, you can do anything if only you are motivated.

@Sogeking That's a pretty silly and irrelevant argument. We're talking mainly about positive self-improvement, not something as negative and extreme such as murder.

@@xrenegade87xchannel88 same, I don't want to read comments. Because there will always be that someone who makes a stupid or a hateful comment that kills your vibe. Gonna try restricted mode.
