I feel like a lot of self-help books can be summarized in one sentence: "The secret to happiness is that there is no secret." I've read a few self-help books, but for me, real self-help comes from good stories. Whether fiction or nonfiction, learning about someone else's life and how they overcame obstacles is what really helps me improve my own life.

I feel the same. Watching a really impactful film/TV show can sometimes have a far bigger impact than a self-help book. That being said, I do think self-help can get me into a certain mindset that might help in some aspect of my life. For example, reading 'Deep Work' gave me a stronger appreciation of work ethic and focus. While I didn't apply any hard rules from the book, I did find myself really considering focus and work ethic every time I sat down to study or write.

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES: 1) Taking Action, non matter how small, is the Key to making progress 2) A good rule of thumb: pick at least 3 concepts from every (self-help) book and put them into practice immediately. 3) Take notes and put bookmars when you read (probably actual books are better) 4) We often flinch in the face of fear, BUT if we embrace the flinch (instead of suffering it and getting blocked): when we repeatedly expose ourselves at different kind of flinches, both big and smalles, we can start to overcome fear and build the life what we want. 5) Avoid the mistake of blindy follow whatever advice is being shared (in self-help books): find what work for YOU 6) If you ask yourself what will stood in the way of progress, and than you develop targeted strategies to change beahvior, the results will be far better 7) The best self-help book ask you to think critical, the worst ask you to blindly follow a step by step plan: it's your responsability to question everything and ask yourself "how can I adapt this work for my life?". What's important is to be able to go in with an open mind, find 3 things that you can test, and hopefully find one thing that'll stick for the long run. CONCLUSION: Is important to remember that ultimately self-help is about the self, that's YOU: whatever piece of content you consume, consider how you can be an active participant in your own journey, by questioning, implementing and taking action in your own life (see #1): while it's great to take inspiration, you need to become your own "guru".

I agree. Even if the person does not take the important action, the tendency is that the general mindset will change. I see this in a colleague who loves Ted talks. While they've not really acted on the ideas, they have become a much more positive person over the years, (and do have some good advice sometimes).
There was a point when I read and listened to ALOT of self help books and podcast . In the years of mid 2000s to early 2015ish … But after a while so much of it became overlap and repeating the same message. “Face your fears, never quit on things you are passionate about, life is short” . A paragraph could summarize most these books … And the advice and “action steps” of many of these books was so vague and esoteric. Also I got tired of self help books from people , who’s only life experience was, self help .

@Munaim Kayani My personal favorite book that impacted my life was Neil Straus “Rules of the Game” . It’s a social dynamics book that provides 30 days of challenges to go out and be comfortable socializing. I’m aware some will call it “PUA” and critique it for just talking to women . But if you’re someone who is an introvert, or awkward and want to meet people ; you need some tangible baseline task . “Be yourself” and flowery talk won’t cut it , IMO. Dave Ramsey “debt snowball” is a good book, As well as “richest man in Babylon” . Those are books that shine to me .

I agree! Self help books can be useful, certainly self awareness is a positive attribute, but also can be addictive. They can promote self-absorption. How many of these books does one need to read? Seems like it can be an obsession. Also, the more messed up and dysfunctional an author of some of them can convince readers that they are, the more profit for the next book in the works..it also makes for a profitable industry to repackage each other’s concepts over and over. I pulled back from reading these books awhile ago, after sensing a hamster wheel of sorts, and now I feel less anxious, more peaceful. A few key ideas were helpful I’ll admit and to maybe even hear repeated, but with a limit. It’s human nature to think ‘this is good more is better’ when it’s not..

@Sapiens I find that many good self-help gurus and consultants in general are the ones who failed at something(s) and then turned that into a profession. They are not talking theory rather actual from learning experience.
I have to agree. Started reading physical books again and I have a greater appreciation for them now compared to my ebooks and audio books. Being able to physically leave notes and mark pages is so much more satisfying.
I can totally relate when you said that books became your mentor. I feel the same way because there aren't too many ambitious enough people in my real life in which I could share ideas and have a edificial conversation.
One of the most influential books in my life was „Bullet journal“ which is essentially based around the idea of building system that works for YOU specifically. Two years later not only i now have a consistent journaling and notetaking practice but also a principle to live by.

Great Video Matt. and I absolutely agree with this one. I'm lucky that I started highlighting and taking notes after only reading 3 books without doing so because I felt like I was not able to recall any info from them. Now I highlight the key ideas in every chapter, and every Section or so I copy these highlights and try to rewrite them in my own words. It lets me recall the ideas and keep a small summary of the book to refer for later when needed. I'm not doing my best at taking action but I'm definitely trying to.

in general i recommend to not instantly pick up books from philosphers themself, but a book from other authors, who expand on the background and other cirumstances about the philosophers idea to put things into perspective. Which book to to choose depends on what are u looking for. You can divide philosophy in 2 bigger categories: theoretical philosophy (for ex. what's truth, what's the purpose of life) and practical philosophy (for ex. what is the right thing to do, virtues)

I'm currently reading "the ethics of ambiguity" and although ethics themselves aren't THAT interesting. I think the larger point being made is that too often us humans fall into absoluteist thinking. I'm completely right and your completely wrong. I'm (X) religion so i cant entertain the idea of evolution. Even atheism is a form of absolutism. I've found that most truth lies between two extremes. Anyways. Simone de Beauvoir. She's super cool. First wave feminist, philosopher of sorts. And very intelligent. Also manufacturing consent by noam Chomsky.
I can always expect no BS from your videos, Matt. Thanks for all of the value you are providing.
Matt, the storytelling in this video is insane. So good! And concise. Thank you from the all of us.
My unoriginal yet effective 5 cents for finishing the books you start: 1. Always pick a book that jumps out to you right at that moment (not one you think you should read) 2. Don't be shy to skim through boring sections (don't force yourself to read them word for word) 3. Attach reading to something you're already doing (for me that's drinking tea in the morning & commuting - I now read at least 1 book/week)

I just realized exactly the same what you have explained. I like to read self-development books every morning for 10-20 minutes, but sometimes I forget things, so I'm getting serious about taking notes. What else what I have noticed, that not all the time you should take actions immediately after reading books like these. Maybe, you are already on the right path, but these self-development books will strengthen your belief, that you do the right thing already.

One disadvantage of self-help books and motivational talks by certain gurus is that, routinely, many of the claims made do not have adequate scientific backing. More advantageous, for example, would be to read books by the philosopher Nietzsche, the writers Goethe and Shakespeare and watch films by the filmmakers Kurosawa, Bergman, Fellini and Godard. Don't fall into the trap of trying to lead an unattainable lifestyle in the short to medium term. Plan your self-development and become a mentor to yourself. 0:15

I strongly agree! I used to be obsessed with learning as much self-help and personal improvement as possible, especially going from video to video. But eventually realized that I wasn't seeing much benefit because I couldn't recall much of what I had "learned" and didn't put it into practice. Overall, if you aren't first covering the essentials (enough sleep, eating right, exercise, have a planner), then you'll see minimal benefits from other tips like email management techniques. First though, grapple with why and whether you should be pursuing self-help. In what way do you want it to improve your life? To what end does being hyper-efficient matter if it just means you can now do more work? What do we lose by trying to turn our imperfect selves into unreachable perfection?

For those E-book enthusiasts. I keep a journal of everybook I read now and note page and paragraph of an idea quote etc. I enjoy. So hopefully by the end of my 20's I will have a journal full of info that essentially is my very own self-authored self-help for dummies.

Loved this video, Matt! This calls to mind a quote from Seneca, “Let's have some difference between you and the books! How much longer are you going to be a pupil? From now on do some teaching as well. Why, after all, should I listen to what I can read for myself? "The living voice,' it may be answered, 'counts for a great deal.' Not when it is just acting in a kind of secretarial capacity, making itself an instrument for what others have to say.”
I have been reading/listening some self-help books and you are right, they offer valuable knowledge on how to improve yourself and your life. what I have understood from those books is that " inaction kills dreams" For different reasons some people stop trying or stop dreaming and stay in their comfort zone for many years as a result when they get older they get ever more miserable in their life. One of the best pieces of advice that I received was " every 2 years do something significant in your life: change house, change job, study something, move somewhere else etc , this will be a major aspect to sharper your skills and to get out of the comfortable zone.
Some very true points. I've had to start reading all of my favourite books again just to take notes and fully consume their insights, would have saved a lot of time had I read them that way the first time round.
Lately I’ve found that fiction can be just a good source for inspiration to improve myself: I get inspired to do well at university while reading The Name of The Wind, more focused on paying attention to my conversations when I read Norwegian Wood and so on. Point is, I think fiction is an underrated source of self-help.

I suffered in college until I came up with the underlining, highlighting, and post-it tricks you highlighted here. Whatever I did that for is what I studied for before the test. It worked like a charm.
Love the videos Matt!! Thanks for all you do sir.
1) Taking Action is the key to making progress. It's essential to take even the smallest steps. a) Embrace the flinch so we can overcome the fear and build the life we want! F**k the excuses just do it! b) Pick 3 concepts from each book that you read. Track the information. Take notes, highlight the best ideas, underline quotes, use post it notes. c)
Nailed it Matt. Another high quality great piece of content. Appreciate all the hard work you put into these videos.
I liked the transition at 1:52 - Things like that go unappreciated, but it's the small things that make a good video into a great one.
I think it’s important to note: Everyone learns differently, so for some audiobooks can be just as good or better than physical books. When I listen to an audiobook I’ll glean most of the information, And I keep notes on my Google Keep when I hear something super important.
Always remember: “Suffer the pain of self-discipline or suffer the pain of self-regret” -Love from a small KZreadr

*I didn't think I would enjoy reading but I started about 6 months ago and now I cant stop! It is super fun to learn new things especially self help books. My current favs are dont believe everything you think, never split the difference, and atomic habits!*
I like the new format of your videos! Keep it up!
Your production quality is insanely good.
I've been going through a similar experience myself. I just graduated college and been focusing on how to prepare for the working world. Always more insight out there. Cool video!
I don't know if you will be positive or negative about self help books because I haven't watched the video yet, but the best self help book about recovering from mental ilness is 'You are not a rock' by Mark Freeman. It's not a book to read and feel good about yourself, it actually provides really practical steps to fully recover from mental illness. (I sound like I am paid to say this but it just saved my life so I want to share about it)

I'm going to look this one up! I suffer from depression and my little brother took his life last year. Mental illness is so hard to recover from so I'm always looking for new strategies.
100.00% percent bullseye. I’ve read almost every one of the books shown in this video. And I was introduced to many of those authors via Matt’s previous KZread work: The Ground Up Show. If you haven’t gone through those interviews, I highly recommend them. But even there, you have to take action ;-)
Thanks for everything you do Matt! You’ve been a positive role model for me for a long time!
1. take action, don't just theorize. 2. pick three concepts from every self help book and put them into practice immediately. 3. act to your flinch and just DO IT. 4. take better notes while reading. 5. don't blindly follow what worked for the author, question and adapt in your own unique way. 6. from every book find 3 things that you can test, and 1 thing that will stick to you in long run. 7. be your own guru.
Interesting that you mention the thing i found out about self-help books within the first minute - taking action! You can read 100s of these books and become the greatest expert on the topic, but if you never take action it doesn't matter. And most people will read these books and continue to not take action. That is why this industry is so successful. People have all the needed tools in their hands but when it comes to action they rather quit and read the next book hoping for the secret formula that will change their life.

Agree yes, most people basically _read_ those books as an end, rarely as a means that leads to acting. And besides, most of the information contained in them is available for free online in a ton of different shapes and forms.
Nice! Great video! I used to have the problem of taking toooooo many notes and couldn’t finish any book and had too many notes of little value. Now I don’t take hardly any notes, only important parts that affected me, and I read a lot more and benefit much more! Love seeing your process!
Do everything u do with honesty, never harm urself or anyone around you.. so that before u go to bed… u realise no matter what how ur life.. ur a good person… that’s it.. thats the key to happiness for me
I'm really interested into the list of self help books you've read. Is it available anywhere? And also...I'm always blown away from the quality of the b-rolls and how much love you put in every single video... I love u man ❤ greetings from germany 🇩🇪
I changed my life drastically by reading and implementing Atomic Habits. If anyone is new to Self Help I would absolutely start with that book as it will lay a foundation for you with everything in life.
Absolutely love your content! Thank you so much for all the time you put into this!!! It’s AWESOME!
Im so happy that the world is shifting away from fear and more into love❤️ Extremely grateful to live in this time and era. Love over fear⚡️

Love the way you presented your point Matt. Self help ISN'T a one size fits all thing, you can change, adapt or discard ideas presented to you, Also you don't always have to read the entire book to start implementing!
Analogy of the transition to adulthood (my perspective) All your life as a kid you're nurtured and taken care of, hidden from a lot of the struggles that you may face when older. The transition of being a kid and becoming an adult is so quick and rough, you’re taught a few things here and there to help the transition but it’s not enough. One day you’re on top of the mountain, the next you're pushed off the cliff into adulthood and you try to stop yourself from hitting the bottom with the tools you have. You pull out your umbrella to slow the fall but it breaks and you keep plummeting and hit the bottom. You then have to pick yourself up and figure out how you can get back up the mountain and develop the tools needed to rise back up, you come across many problems along the way but you have to show adversity to get over these problems you get help along the way but at the end of the day you mostly face these problems by yourself. Many people spend all their life climbing this mountain to find no peak, some make it to the top, some are so badly hurt from the fall they don’t begin the climb.

1000% Agree to either practice some of what they are saying as you are reading it or annotate your books. The self help book that really "opened my eyes" was How to UnF*ck Yourself. There is a line in there that really stuck with me about him bashing self help books (in a sense people are not putting them into practice) stating something along the lines of: What are you going to do? Buy a new self help book, read it, feel productive for a week and then spiral back into your old habits and buy a new one and restart the cycle. You know what you need to do so start acting and stop "pretending" you are fixing it. At the time I had read 15 or so books back to back no applying or practicing anything. I read less of the books now but do so with more intention to practice what I'm doing to actually help myself instead of putting a bandaid over it
As always, amazing video! "Self-help is about the self" It's also very difficult to give some people recommendations on certain self-help books because not everyone is in that mindset of trying to better themselves.
I started struggling with memory retention issues last year, so I've started underlining in my precious books--something that my younger self would have found unforgivable. It's actually been so much easier to flip back through and read the underlined portions to remind myself of my biggest personal takeaways from the book.
Great video, as always, my man! I also am too careful about annotating my books and I also fall into the category of those that only read the first chapter, or two, of probably the same 100 self-help books you’ve read all the way through. However, that changes today. From the vid I watched right before yours and then Seinfeld yours now, I’ll get back to the full read and notes, because I learn way better that way myself! Anywho, GOD bless and keep it pushin’ man!✊🏾🦉💯
