Why This Solo Female Nomad Quit Van Life And Bought Property
Ойын-сауық
#vanlife, #rvliving, #Glorious lLfe On Wheels,
Everytime I turn around I am hearing about a nomad who was.doing "van life".has bought a piece of property, and some are even coming off the road. Heck, even Bob Wells from Cheap RV Living bought some property, but he is still on the road living his best life. Why you ask the sudden rush to own property. Well, I think Covid had a lot to do with it. So many locations shut down and turned nomads away leaving many scrambling for a place to park. Some were sick and needed to rest up and not travel, but couldn't find a place where they could park longterm while recuperating. Others began to think about the future when they could no longer drive or the possibility of health problems as they aged.
In this video Paula explains why she is no longer doing van life, at least for now.and her reasons make a lot of sense. If you are a nomad and have bought property or are considering it for the future do tell us about it in the comments.

May soon come a day where we seniors get our own community, on a big piece of land, and circle the wagons together!
My new small off grid home is almost ready. I am living in the Arizona desert in my rv until it is done. As a 71 yr old currently working as a nurse in outpatient hospice, I have learned the importance of a home base and of community. The toughest hospice cases are the independent elders with no family in the area and friends who cannot help when they are in need of physical care. Those people who, like myself, have too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough money to pay for care. Medicare does not help! It scares the bejezzus out of me. Best of luck to us all! I would love to meet the young lady you interviewed. She sounds great.

@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 My mom lived with me at the end. She was poor enough to need Medicare and Medicaid. She became bed bound due to a hospital error. It was so hard to find a doctor where we could go with a wheelchair, and not need a one thousand dollar ambulance stretcher to take her to the doctor, and then have to leave the exam room door open because the stretcher wouldn't fit in. I found a new practice in a nice new building with huge aisles and big rooms, but the provider didn't take Medicare with Medicaid. I asked for someone who had been highly recommended for the elderly. Years later I found that another person in the practice did take Medicare and Medicaid, but they didn't tell me. Instead of spending $2500 to get me a lift to get her out of bed and into a wheelchair, and then into a car, the State of CT preferred to spend $1000 or more on an ambulance ride, at least three times a week, sometimes more for nearly 5 years until she passed. It could have been so much less stressful to all, and she would have kept her dignity if the State had just helped.

@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 hi glowie carolyn. Jan from texas here. Oh love you and all glowies. This lady is very wise to get a land home base. Nobody can take it from her. I now have health issues. In sept. I have gallstones and i.b.s. the new yr. Here of 23 isnt as good as i thought it would be. Looking forward in bigger and better things for everybody to be blessed by the father. Gotta stay close to drs. Being very careful of what to eat. Not a lot of choices . this is unbelieveable. I didnt no anything about i.b.s. problems. I knew about constipation but not the stomach issues. To get rid of the gallstones the bladder has to be removed. They wont return anymore. Wish it was a simple process. The 23rd. Of march i will need my throat stretched so the food will go down to the stomach . digest better. Thats a simple process. 30 to 45. Min. I hate to loose the bladder tho. But dont need to keep taking pain pills and having discomfort. So its best i get the bladder out. I have medicare and another ins. The dr. Bills will pile up. Cant afford to pay out of pocket. Im not worried. I will tell them the ins. Will help to pay something and i just cant do it. Oh. Here where i live. All dallas and metroplex texas has emergency funding that pays to help us. Pray thats true. If so its a real wonderful blessing. Sure would be nice to have a home base paid for. Mobil home parks rents lots. Dont pay the rent people has to move out. Regardless if the home is paid for or not. No matter how we look at it. Renting is renting no matter what. Sometimes people has to walk away from a paid for home. And go where. Where is family at. Ive outlived my family. Friends. None. Just church. We all are in the same boat. Ive adk for help before. I dont qualify. My soc. Sec. Check is over the limit. 400.00 to 600.00 is the limit. How does someone live on that. What. Just be homeless i guess. Prayers is with you all. And carolyn to. Oh to buy a 1 acre lot 40 miles outside of this town im at. Cost 40.000.00. Zoned for mobil homes. When buying land besure to check the zoneing areas for any type of home. Reg. Sticks and bricks mobil homes. Or metal houses. Like buy a medal house from home depot. Etc. That way you will have a choice of homes. The county or whomever cant make you move. Including wanting. A goat to eat the grass for mowing the acres of land. Etc.also if they will allow you to have 10 or more vehicles on the land. You might have friends that would stay over. Bad weather etc. Then you could make a little money to pay for the land. Having other people around is comforting. What do you think. Be so glad to here from you. May god bless.

Great story. As someone mentioned, not all have the financial means to buy a property even if it’s a piece of land. Also, there’s the consideration of where this piece of land would be, close or away from a medical facility. The veteran Paula helped couldn’t get to the VA facility in his trailer (by the way, the VA should have accepted him in his vehicle or get him in the hospital and take care of his needs). I would say a van is the easiest vehicle to travel if you can afford one because you can go everywhere in it or still receive care inside it. For those who have no family able to care for then (even in their vehicle) it’s more difficult. Here is where those of us who are still capable should exercise our compassion and sense of community, as Paula did. Truly commendable 👏🏼

@IvyAndBoAndMe

@@dianethoroughman9541 Though it sounds that way....Bo was just the first obstacle. As a full-time RVer, Larry's only option would have been to go into a facility full time and give up his home(RV) & dog. Giving those things up when that's been your entire life, isn't an easy decision. If you watch the live that Carole did a few days ago you'll hear the only solution that Larry thought he had for his dog had I not been there to help. The VA wasn't offering solutions. Based on the care (or lack thereof) that Larry had been receiving leading up to his terminal diagnosis he had little faith that moving into a facility would be of any benefit. Especially a VA-specific facility. Talk to military veterans and you will hear many stories about the failure of the system to properly take care of them after they've sacrificed serving for our country.

My husband and I have been planning to be snowbirds for decades. Although we own property in Maryland this state is not friendly to RV living on your own land. We still have two yrs till he retires but we bought our land in an RV friendly state a few years ago. It's paid off now. We knew going on the road with no place to stop and rest would not be prudent for us. We are putting a steel barn on our land to house our fifth wheel. We are east coast runners and will be spending our winters in Florida. Summers in Maryland. Resting during shoulder seasons on our property in Tennessee.
A nomadic life is a wonderful start, but the end game requires much more. When all is said and done we all need to understand how to put a seed in the ground.

You can buy an acre of land in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico as low as $1000. Many nomads buy this land and turn it into a home base to rest when they need a break from the road. Of course you have to keep in mind that the land is desert rural, but usually within an hour or less of a town or city. Erect a car port where you can park your van or bus. Travel during the summer months, and live on your land during the winter months. But keep in mind to stock up on supplies just as you would boondocking on BLM land.
I love the nomad community… Don’t like the regular community but here I am

Paula sure is a kind soul, she's smart to think about getting a home base but still wanting to travel. My wife and I love our home base that we can come back to when we need a break from traveling in our own campervan. Funny she mentioned helping someone change a car tire I've done that several times but my favorite was when my wife and I were traveling through the SD Badlands in our campervan, we came across a lady on a supported bike tour with a flat tire. She was waiting for the event van to pick her up. I offered to put a new tube in her flat tire while she waited for the van, I was in the bike business all my life so I always carry spare tubes of all sizes, bike tools and a floor pump. I got her tire fixed in a few minutes and she wanted to pay me but I refused. On my own bike rides I always offer to help others that have mechanical issues, I can pretty much fix anything. Now having said that, I worry about people like Paula that seems to out of the work force in their prime earning years. Ok to take a break once in awhile but find a career you really love. That is so an important to think about the what if’s. As an aspiring nomad, I have watched a lot of videos and given some thought to this as well as the financial aspect of it. I realize that a substantial number of nomads have some income. I’m much more concerned about those who just work enough to have money to travel but are not as concerned about the long term when they might not be physically able to work. For those who already have some health challenge(s), (myself included) should definitely have a plan for those days when we’re not feeling good. I wish everyone great wisdom for their personal situations and above all that you maybe in good health.❤️

Great interview. I too have a home base and i love being there as much as i do travel. I am looking forward to travels north and east very soon.

Thanks for sharing paula prayers for things work out for you
I can definitely relate to her story. I’m looking at a property in northern Az. There are quite a few plots of land available in the Golden Valley, Dolan Springs area. It’s not too far from Kingman Az
As a veteran please accept my thank you
I'm thinking of buying property in Arizona, somewhere by Ajo or by Flagstaff maybe. I'm following Kevin's journey as well as Nomadic Fanatic who bought land close to Kevin.

My SUV is no longer built out so no tour unfortunately. I needed the space to move my things from storage to my new place. So there are a few things up still, like privacy curtains and window covers but the back is mostly empty. Sorry!
Thank you so much for this whole video 🥰👏I’ve seen a couple of your videos & really enjoyed them but didn’t realize till now .. I hadn’t subscribed to your channel yet Soooo …………. NOW …. IM ONE OF YOUR SUBSCRIBER 👍🏼👍🏼🥰 YAY !! 🥰👍🏼💖
This young woman is wise to have a home base. I moved into a small country town a decade ago in order to find affordable housing to recover from brain surgeries. It was the best decision as the townspeople were incredibly kind and supportive. Never would have coped in the city area.
Paula has a beautiful spirit ❤️
Really loved your heart in this. Wise move having a little more security.
We live in an appartment and use our campervan for long holidays or day trips to the beach. We are looking to buy land where we can build a large garage, then we will be able to travel for longer, but have somewhere to come back to to do repairs on the van, start a hobby farm and relax. Also we can't get inside our parking space with the van, it has low clearance. Plus the strata keeps going up. In 10 years it doubled. We have been wanting to live off grid for years now. It will be the next step. While we sell our appartment we can live in the van. I think it's easier to have a base to go back to, especially when the temperature is too hot at night.
I think wherever Paula goes she is going to be a blessing to many people.
Carol - you are such a talented interviewer by the way!!

🙋🏼♀️ I've been looking for a piece of land for over 3 years now. My biggest challenge is that it have moderate temperatures in the summer because that's when I'd like to go hide (I like to avoid the summer crowds - and all that comes with them 😄) My other consideration is that it be a piece of property that will serve me for approximately 30 years because I initially I plan to just be on my property in the summers, but at some point when I'm older (and probably shouldn't be driving an RV anymore😜) I may choose to live on my property a 100% of the time - so things like year round temperatures also need to be tolerable. Another part of the plan is that the property have a small dwelling (or I'll put a tiny house on it) so that I can have a full time renter 😉 That way, someone is on the property all the time AND it becomes a form of income for me!! So far I have looked around northeast New Mexico, but I'm finding that it doesn't quite meet my "year round" criteria - the summers are great, but the winters would be rough!!! 😲 This year I'm gonna check out the higher elevation towns in northern Nevada 🤷🏼♀️ Being a native California, I have no idea what the states east of Texas have to offer, but I'm open and would love any suggestions from any folks that do know 😁 Thanks 😘

Just an FYI....I grew up a landlord's daughter....don't expect renters to watch or protect your property...quite the opposite...many go out of their way to destroy the property...and you will end up paying for it....I flat refuse to allow renters or roommates around..... I don't care about the " I know who's or the I know someone.......the vast majority of renters are not worth a damn....also...if you are way off grid....good luck finding a renter.... even more so....a decent one....

@@beautifuldreamer3991 I hear 'ya, but I think there is also a risk of vandalisim when a property is left vacant for months on end too... It's a tuogh call. Also, I won't buy anything that is more than 45 minutes from "civilization" (ie Walmart, gas, grocery) because I would feel too remote and unsafe, as well as, I imagine my renter will be a working local 😉

Definitely looking for a small piece of land !! for either parking a van on (which I don't have yet) but plan on it, ...currently in a condo, living expenses are getting to be too much. Anyway I was thinking about Arizona, maybe a little bit higher in elevation so that the Summers aren't so stifling, but the only bad thing about Arizona is that it's hard to grow any sort of vegetation... vegetables, I would like to have a very small garden as well, but that's the plan I keep looking and looking, most land regulates what you can do.... incredible tiny homes is advertising that they are looking at purchasing land for tiny homes in Nevada, I know Arizona does not tax Social Security, I have not checked Nevada yet. But I definitely do not want anymore snow, too hard to navigate, and to hard on the old body LOL

Having a landing spot is fantastic as long you have the funds. If one wants to trave they can rent their land to other nomads for extra income.

Such a beautiful kind lady ❤
If you're looking for a tiny home, call Randy Jones at Incredible Tiny Homes in TN. He's purchasing land in Crystal, NV. He'll deliver for a fee. You can get one completely off grid or not. They come with kitchen and bathroom. He's the best. He just left there and is home now. I sure wish I could afford one. 😢
Loved this video thank you ladies! ❤ Some folks who can not afford to purchase a tiny home to put on their property purchase a large shed which is way cheaper and doable and create a home in it which works just fine. I as a senior have been contemplating that and would love to have a home base mainly for winter in southern NM w other nomadic women to keep an eye out for eachother, and everyone would have their own space. Dreams manifest goals 😊
I have a home in FL that I'm leaving it soon to be a nomad and will be looking for land out west. I would love for my place here to be a stopover for nomads needing a break, though I hope I never have to come back. For now, it's a security blanket, a just in case hold, but I think once I get on the road, I will meet other like-minded folks who might share this space whether I'm here or not.
Thank you for sharing her story❤ God Bless the both of you😊🙏🏼💜 If I’m able to find a tiny home base & Rv, I would live to try this lifestyle at retirement. (I also have some health issues) I’m not sure my daughters want me to, but housing is so expensive. The perfect picture would be affordable tiny home community in VA close to family.

such a sweetheart, and wonderful person!
Sometimes people are reliable, I was a Good Sam member. Broke down in El Paso in 100 degree weather. Called them and they located a company to help me. They decided not to help and 5 hours later I found that out. The police stopped by and sent someone to help.
Please check on the laws and codes in the place you want to buy land. Not all places will let you live in a van or rv on that land. Be careful be safe 🙏 peace and love ❤️
Smart to take a break when necessary
God bless you.
❤️ TFS!
I’m sure it would be lovely to have a home base, whether land or an apartment. Of course, a small house would be heaven! But reality is that years of applications have not yielded affordable housing in this area, and my social security is too low to rent anywhere that has a climate I can tolerate (extreme temps make me sicker). I’m 69, and intend to explore the U.S. for as long as I can drive! After that, who knows what will have happened to housing 15 years from now?
I would want to stop to help someone on the side of the road, BUT for me, it is too dangerous

@@Hard_Car_Life I'm not sure how it's dangerous to stop and help someone in broad daylight in front of a business on a busy street. However we each have our own sense of comfort and safety & I respect that. I am thankful that I have been able to help many people and am still alive and unharmed.
Definitely looking for future situations...My wife and I live in a home in CA but she is 8 years older and probably will pass before me. We purchased 1999 RV and will start a 3 month journey to Florida where my daughter and grandchildren live. I just retired last year and we are feeling the same way about the chaos these days and where can we go if sh-t hits the fan . All your video covers the same concerns.

Good interview. Just wish she would of shared more information on her home base. Was it a house ,just bare property ECT.
The pandemic was mind bending. Just never would have guessed we would see such insane things happen.
I’m glad you finally just admitted you needed a break cause those examples were not very strong.
I've been telling people like this for years she's thinking the way I'm being thinking to have a Homebase rather than this live out to your band full-time I don't mind my full-time either and never will I rather have a home base to be honest and I'm looking to buy a piece of land also so I can build a tiny house and when I want to go away I can but if anything happens to me I have a place to stay.. this lady is singing the right way..
Michelle Hightower, 45 years old, quit van life and is living in a Section 8 apartment. She is happy going to college in South Carolina. 2023
I’m about to get into van life and looking to purchase property as well. I’m looking at Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. I’d love to purchase a larger amount as a group!!!
interesting thoughts. Owning land is a good idea, not paying someone rent. Vanlife is a great life. 👍
That is a GREAT IDEA!

I encourage anyone who knows a vet, please ask them if they have been in touch with a rep at the VA to find out if they are getting the medical and cash benefits they are entitled to. I have two friends who had never applied for any and now receive cash benefits and burial considerations. 🇺🇸
