Why These EuroLeague Stars Regret Joining The NBA

Vasilije Micic and Sasha Vezenkov were MVPs of the EuroLeague, but they have struggled so far in the NBA. Sasha Vezenkov isn’t getting many minutes with the Sacramento Kings, and he isn't playing as well as he did with Olympiakos. Sasha Vezenkov was a perfect fit for the Kings offense alongside Sabonis and DeAaron Fox so it makes no sense why he isn't playing more.
Vasilije Micic is playing even less, he was a 2 time MVP at Anadolu Efes and he finally decided to join the NBA at 30 years old. The OKC Thunder were one of the NBAs best teams, but Vasilije Micic wasn't getting any playing time. And he was just traded to the Charlotte Hornets in a deal centered around Gordon Hayward, who now plays for the OKC Thunder. With the Hornets, Vasilije Micic will probably get more playing time, as the backup point guard for LaMelo Ball. But the lack of respect and playing time that these two European stars have recieved, is exactly why so many EuroLeague stars don't come to the NBA.

I'd take the Judgement of the previous NBA coach of the Year and the Coach of the 2nd seed in the West over the Judgement of Juliusraw and DKM. As for the Dirk Comparison yes both Dirk and Sasha can shoot and rebound so can Grant Williams, Dragan Bender, Keegan Murray,Trey Lyles and like 100 other Power forwards since the 2000s. His NBA contract is: 3 years 23 million. He was unlikely to get a contract equally large in Euroleague if he performs well he can be looking at 20M+ a year. Granted Euroleague salaries are in Europe and pre-taxes so the NBA equivalent would be quite higher. But still this was an unusually large contract for Euroleague standards. Meanwhile NBA teams are giving Mid to high level contracts like Candy

Which DKM even mentioned himself then completely disregarded 10 seconds later, even if you bring a 28yo EuroMVP on board into your team realistically it take all time greats 4-8 years to win their first chip, makes it a lot harder to invest in that 28-30yo Euro player when you take that into consideration as well

  • @SerbLawyer92
    @SerbLawyer924 ай бұрын

First problem is that Euroleague stars often land in teams which already have their best player (or franchise player NBA speaking) who is dominating the ball and score usage. Vezenkov had that bad luck to land in the team which has one of the best guards in NBA along with very good PF/C and yet there is no room for him. Add to this the fact that other players are fighting for their minutes and ball touches and scoring because their future contracts are depending because of their production. Few years ago, Nemanja Bjelica signed with Timberwolves which were very awful team back then and in that moment they had KAT, Wiggins and LaVine as their future stars and they were fighting for ball between them. Second, coming to NBA as a experienced player (Micic came when he was 29, Bjelica 27, Teodosic 30, Vezenkov 28) is not good. If Euroleague star doesn't come in NBA by age 24,25, he is pretty much doomed. Bogdanovic came at age 24 I think and he is right now very good 6th man. Just look Doncic who was 19, Jokic 20 and they had room to grow and make mistakes while experienced players coming to NBA don't have that kind of privilege because it is expected from them to adjust to NBA quick.

Great analysis, I’ll be following this channel. It’s really hard to argue that either one of these players deserves more playing time, given the big leaps and greater success of the Kings and Thunder this year with younger lineups. (Forgive me for referring to them as Players 1 & 2, checking the right name is hard when commenting on my phone) I also think it’s a bit of a stretch to compare Player 1’s equal/superior FIBA tournament performance with Jokic, Giannis, etc and kind of place him on their level. It’s a very small sample size to go off of and you then actually prove that this sample doesn’t really show Player 1 is in their category. I also wish you would have discussed this question more: what would have happened if Player 1 or 2 would have come to the NBA as a Rookie? Especially Player 2 who was drafted and didn’t come. Luka is a rare breed, but maybe they could have had a similar path to D. Sabonis or Jokic, where they show early promise and evolve into a top NBA player over 4-5 years. I’m thinking about Coulibaly. Yes, he was drafted high and so there’s more incentive to come and play immediately since you’ll make a ton of money and the team is committed to playing you a lot of minutes early. But Bilal is earning minutes and turning heads as a rookie while getting the NBA “training” you need for your game to flower BEFORE you reach your athletic prime. Coming in at 30 yrs old like Player 2, I think it’s fair for teams to expect immediate results. You’re experienced, a champion, an MVP, so you don’t have the same runway to get your game going as a younger, less experienced player. Anyway, I enjoyed this serious take on this topic and the depth of knowledge shown on both the NBA and Euroleague.

The NBA is higher scoring sure, but that doesn't mean anything since ANY player will score more points in the NBA per minute than they do in Europe. It's down to the rules and the style of play. The NBA is still BY FAR the best basketball league on Earth.

@@sandman1347 yes, but European players from the Euro league play for their respective countires in the Olympics. We didn't even medal in 2020. We have a lot of talent and still lose to a handful of teams in the Olympics. Many (not all) of the best current NBA players played Euro league first. Giannis, Luca, Jokic, Wemby. The Euroleage is much better at building up and teaching fundamental skills that the modern NBA does not really teach anymore. That's why all of the "unathletic" Euro leage players drop crazy points all the time. Luca. Giannis, and Jokic says the NBA is so much easier. I think the NBA is only slightly better than the Euroleage as of now. In the next decade or so the Euroleage will have the best talent once more players are incentivized to play in the Euroleage. Basketball is becoming more and more popular in Europe, and that just means more talent for them to grow. I do agree the NBA is better now, but not really by that much. Sooner or later (unless the NBA expands it's popularity into Europe) the Euroleage will become the best.

@@TheBuffaloFlats The only thing that needs to change is the way that the US develops talent. The system of going from high school to college to the pros cannot possibly compete with a system of having professional teams involved in the development of young talent from the time the players are 15/16 like you have in Europe. Once that changes the gap may open back up again. Ultimately, Europe is benefiting right now from having the best development system, not the best talent. I don't think the Euroleague is particularly close to the NBA. I think any NBA player could play in that league but only about 10-12% of Euroleague players could make it in the NBA.

Style of play in Euroleague is arguably superior to the NBA, because the rules don't massively favour offense over defense. So the game is more balanced. Also, there's more tactics utilized and less hero ball/ iso, which has led to the NBA looking like a glorified pickup game at the local gym. When Popovich decided to use European tactics in the NBA, they literally called it 'The beautiful game', that happened for a reason.

Shooting drills aren’t the same as shooting during a game. Also being 1st Team All Euroleague isn’t automatically transferable to NBA success. Mike James is mentioned in the video as having one of the better “bags” in the Euro League. He lasted two seasons in the NBA. Jokic, Luka, Sabonis and Giannis are not the norm. They are the exception. If we are to believe all of the hype from some Euro League fans that claim it is better than the NBA, then their most recent mvp, Vezenkov, at age 28, should be experienced enough to assimilate into the NBA and thrive, as he represents the best of that league. He has earned 12 minutes a game at age 28 and can’t seem to beat out a second year player who is 5 years his junior.

The NBA has a hierarchy: 1) Franchise player/players aka your stars 2) Long stay borderline all-stars 3) Promising rookies 4) Free Agents 5) G League talent The thing is that Luka and Victor have age on their sides, but also space to grow where you draft needs for your team. The problem is that a 30 yr old "rookie" is more like a 30 yr old "free agent". This is talent brought in to fill out the bench squad (the 5 guys outside of the starters), but are promised a starting role if they "play good enough". They're not starting. They have to do something otherworldly to impress management, coaches, and influence a change of chemistry on the team, and that's if coaching and management doesn't change hands while they're there. I don't know the best way for european talent to break through without being a draft prospect yet. The best case scenario is finding a team teetering on competing and in desperate need of a starter still. Maybe being traded to an awful team can also get them the playing time they need to get noticed or turn that team around. The best "blueprint" right now is probably the Lauri example. Look at someone who was drafted really high, but was thought of as this shooting specialist on a deep team. It wasn't until he was traded to a team in need a star after losing their own that he exploded and became an all-star. Now, the Jazz aren't competing for a championship yet, but at least Lauri lengthened his career. The only other blueprint I can think of is Jokic, but he was still young when he broke through. He did have to outplay a potential star is Nurkic to get to where he is now, but that journey took a new coach, a number of high level players around, so much so that some of them needed to be traded away, and 8 years of playing to get a championship. These guys don't have 8 years. So, my best bet is finding a team, in need of scoring and a forward, on a team in need of star power that doesn't have that much money available to spend. Also finding a euro friendly system would also help. Teams like the Spurs, Nuggets, Mavericks with good systems or teams like the Kings (sorry Barnes) or Warriors (sorry Wiggins) in need of more forward talent. Then you have the best options with teams like the Cavs, Hawks, Wolves, and Rockets who are trying to win now, but need another piece to push them over other more favored teams. A lot of it is just luck of fit and I hope Euroleague finds a better pipeline than free agency to demonstrate their talent to the league.

Vezenkov has 2 or 3 good games in a row and suddenly next five he is DNP. Imo there are inside things , politics and favoritism which play a big part in Vezenkov's minutes. He is not a starter level for high-level teams in NBA for now but for sure is a back-up . I dont think the fit is there too. Its surprising why SAC put so much effort to recruit and convince him to come over and then suddently he is out of the rotation in consequitive games. There is something behind the scenes happening. He can shoot higher 3pt % if he is not shooting it sometimes in the last seconds with a hand in his face.

Not everyone who plays well in the Euroleague can play equally well in the NBA. You cannot compare Vasilij Mičić and Sasha Vezenkov with Luka Dončić. It took Sasha Vezenkov eight seasons that he produced equal, or similar statistics, which Luka did in his three seasons, but if we compare them at the same age, Sasha cannot be compared to Luka, so this comparison is out of place, because if Luka had stayed in Europe and continued his career in the Real Madrid, he would probably become a multiple MVP and champion. The same situation is if we talk about Luka Dončić and Vasilij Mičić. Luka played in the Euroleague for only three seasons and already in his second season he achieved an enviable result, and in the third he became the best player in the league, so you cannot compare the results and achievements of 19-year-old Luka Dončić with 28-year-old Aleksandar Vezenkov, or even less with 29-year-old Vasilij Mičić. At the age of 19, Luka became a member of the top five of the decades for a reason. This is exactly what makes the difference between them and this is exactly the reason why some succeed in the NBA and others don't.

Defense is a big enough issue as of itself (by the way what happened to the NBA has no defence argument? How come Euroleague players regularly go to NBA and get exposed defensively?) But the biggest issue is that Sasha doesn't seem to be strong or fast enough to get into his spots consistently. When your whole game relies on Catch and shoot it can be the difference between being a Star,a role player or a bench warmer. I agree the Playoffs will make or break his NBA career at this point. The pacing slows down significantly and he'll either struggle and thus get cut from the rotation entirely or he will benefit from the slower pacing and have his chance to make an impact

No one's gonna hand keys to a 27yr old+ foreigner whose mettle hasn't been proven yet in the NBA. They had a lot of trial and error in building with Luka and Jokic and the former still doesn't have a solid footing. Age is just a much more concerning factor in NBA when they are ran to the ground weekly if they're useful.

Sasha needs more minutes, for real. His off the ball movement is very good, but he shouldn't play starter, Keegan and Barnes are just better. The Micic situation is Micic not being good enough/having to adjust to a different playstyle. He can't have the ball in his hands like that when Shai and Giddey are his teammates. But I don't think he NEEDS the ball in his ends, he has a good enough skillset to be a good off-ball player in the league.

@@clan_o be a good role player, I guess. Sasha is talented but was only MVP because he was in the ideal situation. Was he in any other team in the Euroleague he wouldn't be an MVP. Of course, he would still be a starter on any team in the Euroleague.

I remember Sasha from when he played for the team I support (Aris Thessaloniki), when he was 20 years old. The guy is a really hard worker. American players have a hard time in Europe during their first season, until they get acclimated, and my guess is that the same goes for European players moving to the NBA. Sasha needs time.

Here’s what I think needs to happen, the NBA NEEDS to expand. I feel like every team is so deep and teams are deeper than they have been in a long time. They need to get some more teams to give more players some chances. I think this could also help decrease the scoring output that is currently really high.

Vezenkov would be a perfect fit for the Lakers. They need 3pt shooters and forwards spacing the floor. He is not a worse defender than their other PFs (Rui, Prince,) and is MUCH better in terms of scoring and spacing. He is super cheap as well. Other good options for him are the Bulls - they now have zero healthy PFs, and even when P.Will is back Vezenkov would be a more than capable backup, in a team which is in the bottom 3rd in 3p%. The third best option for him is the Nuggets as a backup for AG. He would fit perfectly in their system and am sure will have an amazing understanding with Jokic.

The issue is the euroleague stars come over in their late 20’s early 30’s at their max potential theres nothing else that can be developed. Sure you can say they dont get playing time but they’re are younger better players who they can develop for the long term

I believe it's all about marketability. Creating a brand out of the player is what the league and teams care for. And you cannot create a brand out of 30 years old foreigner who does not seemlessly fit into the culture. That's why Luka was given the chance. Luka is young, brash, charismatic and a tad bit arrogant. He is no less American star than most American stars. Micic and Vezenkov are not cut out for that. That's why Jokic was so clearly rejected for numerous years until he and his team made his case undeniable. All of the players we watch in the Euroleague and the NBA are unbelievable athletes and minds and the gap between the best and the middle of the road is not that far at all. Under the right circumstances most if not all of them could shine. And under the wrong circumstances all of them could look mediocre. Imagine if Wesbrook went into Europe and got assigned a 3&D role because that's what his team needed and because he's shown good prospects on defence. He might've adapted at some point but it would have taken years. Would have he had the patience? I don't know? Would have he gotten to his full potential? Like hell he would. But after all, it's not necessarily the job of a NBA team to win games, its job is to win money. And marketable superstars is what brings in the money.

1st Hornets game for Micic - 26 minutes, 18pts 8/12, 2/3 from 3pt, 9 assists and +14. Give him the keys whilst Lamelo is out, then you've got a fun team to watch and a useful trade asset if you're not going to use him long term.

Micic game ONE with Charlotte dropped 18 points on 8/13 shooting. Given how injury prone the Ball brothers seem to be, I think he will have plenty of opportunities if he stays in Charlotte Vezenkov needs to go somewhere where he is really needed. The Kings don't need him, they have people who fill that role. But put him somewhere that needs that floor spacing, somewhere like the Lakers or even my Spurs, and give him some 20 minute games to prove himself over 5-10 games, and I think he proves himself.

Honestly here’s a thought did euro league stars ruin the NBA game? Before Dirk PFs were rarely shooting 3’s or long distance shooters. Now every PF has to do that and there are hardly anymore dominant PF’s because of it. Mostly SF’s playing PF. Now Jokic is making it to where all C’s need to be able to shoot, RB, and most importantly have a great passing game. Don’t get me wrong I love international players and the US is now way behind in developmental stages of the game. Giannis, Luka, and Jokic are all top 5 players. I also really like Sengun who’s a young Pau Gasol and a future star too. But it can’t be ignored.
