People from the Clippers organisation were literally shocked, Milos used to smoke, drink and didn't work hard. He took some money, had flashy moves here and there and came back to Europe. Offensively he's a genious, but in defense he never bothered.

Ah Nando De Colo. He's one of my favorite stories of players who were more successful after they left the NBA. So, he requested to be traded from the Spurs that season. It was simple, he wanted to do more and the Spurs wouldn't let him. Before we traded him, he had some good games but that was to probably increase his trade value. I love the fact he became successful in Europe, even becoming an MVP.

I think Luka is already a Hall of Famer considering it's the BASKETBALL HOF and not just the NBA HOF. FIBA & NBA are different. Recent successes on the world stage for U.S. teams has been because they've started practicing together, sometimes 3-4 years ahead of the games, in order to prepare for the difference. The Euro players that have succeeded in the NBA have hit 4 things all at once: - Not waiting until their 30s to enter - Having natural talent - putting in the same time to learn NBA, as they would to hone their skills - getting drafted to a team / coach that was a good fit. Spanoulis, for example, got a terrible deal in Jeff Van Gundy. Gregg Popovich, traded for him & would have given him a great opportunity, but the guy didn't want to work for it & I get it. It is the old concept of whether someone wants to be a "Big fish in a small pond Vs a Small fish in a big pond"? It would be hard to turn down being a sports God, just to go work your ass off to be an everyday person.

I remember Arvydas Macijauskas, Antoine Rigaudeau and Jiri Welsch. They were absolute monsters in Europe. Completely unstoppable. They did nothing in the NBA. Sometimes you just have to find your place. Most of the european stars failing at the NBA (and the other way round) has to do with the fact that NBA and FIBA are quite different ways to play. Some numbers of many european stars on their prime while playing FIBA sound ridiculous (we're talking about 14-18 ppg) but defense in Europe is struggling, the scoring is more distributed (there's no such thing as "franchise player" taking all the shoots in european clubs) and specific rules and smaller quarter lenghts don't help either. We could say that a 18 ppg stat in Europe could equal to 30 ppg in NBA. The Mirotic case reminds me to Dino Radja. Already a star on the NBA, but rejected valuable contracts for returning to Europe and eventually playing for the croatian league in his country. Spanoulis was amazing. I'd choose him for my team over more succesful guys like Tony Parker all day. Other guys never reaching NBA like Bodiroga, Gallis, Chikalkin or Djordjevic deserve some love too.

Mirotic really was on pace to have a long solid career. He’s honestly a great player. But he wanted to go home and play where he liked to play, he got his huge contact and instead of not being the solidified one option or at least starter in a winning team. @@gaseousclay9529that's the whole point you're missing. They're the guy. They have been for big part of their careers and when they move across the pond they're treated as if they can't play and best they can hope for is role players. Can you imagine how long would Harden or James stay in Europe if they were treated this way? It's not that those players don't know how to play. It's the fact that they're expected to change everything about their game, often giving up their strengths to play a lesser role. Not everyone is as Lucky as Manu or Tony and gets to play for Pops that is keen to use their skills and strengths.

I'm a European basketball fan who enjoys both the NBA and the Euroleague, and to be fair basketball in Europe is just significantly slower paced. It is not poor basketball by any means and I enjoy watching it, but it's easy to understand why the jump to the big pond is rough for many. Also many of these guys just were not given a real chance.

Europe has different rules. Smaller court and no defensive 3 seconds makes it easier to hide bad defensive players on defense like Teodosic for example. Also it's hard for some players to adjust from having the ball in their hands at all times to just being a role player. There's also NBA coaches who play these guys out of position and not to their strengths, often times they would just stick Europeans in the corner as spot up shooters and that's it.

Don’t embarrass yourself. 3 out of top 5 NBA players come from Euroleague and they all claim it’s more difficult in Europe. Obviously some cannot make the switch to a very different style but they aren’t role players and there is a clear bias from US coaches, owners, media and the public - that works against European players. Also - to tone down your ignorance - they do not play in euroleague. They play in the respective national leagues and on top of that compete in the euroleague tournament … a sort of in season tournament if you wish but at higher level.

NBA is just physical, because gives priority to athletism. Brutality has nothing to do with sports, it's related to player's background. 'Very demanding' with stars recovering from fatigue staying on court and not participating to defense phase...? There are benches in Europe, try it too 😉 Even NBA players got troubles to adapt in Europe, because of work ethic, teamplay, less and shorter pauses, smaller courts (means you must accelerate more frequently and you get doubled-up easier, plus you must be a more accurate passer), less tolerance for traveling and other NBA non-called infractions... You have to learn and do everything, when you play in European teams: be a scorer is not enough (maybe dunkers only? We don't even start to talk about it 😆).
