Not a big fan of this video, you just talked about his key career moments, not exactly why Spanoulis is idol to many players. Havent even talked about his game beside clutchness. Yes, he is one of the most clutch players all the time, but he had one of the best handles in Europe, he was the best at splitting double team and therefor he was almost impossible to trap or be shut down in the pick and roll. A lot of Lithuanians idolized Jasikevicius therefor we got generation of guards who never learned how to dribble the ball, cause lets be real, Saras had no handle. People needed to watch Spanoulis tape, a guy who had ability to got to his places, any place on the court, at any time, with zero athleticism. Thats Luka, and its no surprise he learned it from Spanoulis. Spanoulis never had godly stats like some would think, I mean his stats were all Euroleague material, but the man wasn't there to just fill the stat sheet, he was there to lead his team when moments got tough. He was the only player in Euroleague, where you could build a contender just by having him. Those Olympiakos teams were never favorites, but they got Spanoulis, surrounded him with defensive players and it was enough, cause Spanoulis probably never had a bad moment in the clutch, he was guarantee. Man won Euroleague with Acie Law as second ball handler for god sake. When you look at his tape, its easy to dismiss him, his jump shooting mechanics were ugly, he was purely below the rim guy and didnt have ideal physical tools. But his game just worked. Would he have worked in the NBA, of course, if you think Spanoulis couldn't figure out NBA, you are lying to yourself. He probably never was star material, but his game just work despite not looking great. I remember Olympiakos - CSKA final, where Teodosic was so bad on defense, he got benched, he was unplayble, just a total liability at the end of the game, where Spanoulis just came there and made all the buckets in the cluch as usual. And on that day you could tell the difference between superstar Teodosic and Superstar Spanoulis. Teodosic had better stats, flashier game, better looking shot, nice looking assists, but when it gets tough, Spanoulis was always better, he was born for those moments.

@@jkstylz Saras was great, but it was his mind that made him great, not necessarily a skill that you can imitate. You cant imitate Saras well, but we got generations of kids learning flashy passing thinking that will make them next Saras, and therefor we got players like CIzauskas who literally cant dribble the ball pass anyone. Spanoulis had more imitatable skill cap, i think hes a better idol for that reason. Of course just like you cant learn Saras' IQ, you will not grow Spanoulis' balls and precision in the clutch, but you can learn that handle, that split etc.

@@jkstylz saras was obviously good , but not spanoulis level of good. Can you ever think Saras leading a bunch of bangers/nobodies to a euroleague title? No. But he could be a key piece (like he was) to superteams (maccabi, panathinaikos, barcelona). Also a totally different character than spanoulis, Saras was super vocal and aggressive in his manerisms, spanoulis was dead eyed always, calm and collected rarely whining or talking a lot during a game.

Olympiacos suffered with economical problems and all major stars left (except Spanoulis), only being replaced by rookies... BUT under Vassilis Spanoulis' leadership the team won back-to-back Euroleague titles... So... I'm genuinely asking because I'm not that informed with his game. Why do you think Pop would have been perfect? I know the Spurs brought in lot of international players who had success, and I really think he would have been given the chance, but from the video it seemed like he was a shoot first player. While that Spurs team was all about fundamentals and making the right passes. He wouldn't exactly have been able to get many shots up with that team. Was he known as a really good passer, a good spot up shooter, or do you think his talent was so great Pop would have let him take away shots From Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan? Basically I'm just curious, because that's a great Spurs team, what would you envision his role being on the team?

Spanoulis is very dangerous in pick and roll situations which fits well with the spurs slow-pace offense. Yes, his game would need to adapt a bit but the key here is that he would be given a chance by Pop. As for his ceiling...it's hard to tell because we cant know with things like injuries, team chemistry and many others being factors but I do believe he would be at least a very reliable option of the bench

Piraeus was on Krete for a game and stayed in the hotel I stayed in for work (we were organizing a seminar closeby) and as I was heading back home via Greece, I noticed the team was on my flight as well. Because of prices being good for flights I had gotten a first class seat (nothing major, just a seat at the front of the plane basically) and told the coaches that if Vassilis wanted it, he could have my seat. He came over to me while boarding and said he really appreciated the offer but he wanted to stay with the rest of the team. I'll always remember that.

He was not all that great in europe either, most of the hype around him came from the win vs Team USA in 2006 and him choosing to play in europe over USA and the greek fans being overjoyed to have him back. His average points were around 11 in league play, around 13 in euroleague and he also only had low assists and his assist to turnover ratio was also not great. He had three seasons at Panathinaikos right after the Houston year where he shot the three very well at over 40% but after that he fell back into a hole and shot roughly around 30% threes except for one season where he had 37%. If you are a massive Spanoulis stan, you are because of pride and thats okay, but you probably already know he wasn't all that when you think about it realistically.

But like many great players he had a huge ego, he was treated like a 18 year old high school draftee while he was an established star in Europe, his ego couldnt take being a bench warmer and work his way up to his minutes and role again. I mean you see nba stars getting sad and having their performance decrease just by switching from a 1st option to 2nd or 3rd. Not only for his basketball "trophies" but mostly because of the way he did it: Dedication and hard work. Also, outside of the courts hes been very humble and a worthy role model for any youngster, since he has always been a family man throughout his career ,having 6 kids so far ,all of them born while he was still a player!! :)

When people like you say family man, or family values you mean the irrational and objectively wrong morality that people shouldt have a lot of sexual partners before marriage. If everyone has a lot of sexual partners before marriage, as long as contraceptives are used there are no unwanted pregnancies, there is no spreading of diseases, there is no negative effect on society.

NBA is too small for players like Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Navaro, Sarunas, Bodiroga, Papaloukas. At their time NBA was also smaller than it is today. But still at this time it is the league that relies on athletic capacity, power and speed while the final product favours the spectacle. On the other hand european basketball gives the opportunity to basketball geniuses to thrive, lead and produce real basketball moments, thrilling highlights, rivalries, cold and hot sensations and moments that will inprint in our minds for the generations to came, because it really respects a true talent giving him the way to evolve and mature without taking as a standard the muscular size, speed and poor tactics.

First things first, if you gotta no clue in European Basketball there is nothing to figure it out to begin with once you can't compare it to NBA and its players. For us in Europe who watch EUROPEAN Basketball and NBA we can compare them, and can tell the one is a tactical sport with energetic funs that provide certain help for the home team. Players and coaches have to be strong personalities who respect the hierarchy and rely on team work. On the other hand watching NBA can tell that fans are only decorative in a cinema like stadium atmosphere. Coaches are simply there only for giving us the idea that someone has the control but in reality the prima donna of the team takes over. We can also tell that there is no team work like that we can watch in Euroleague and we feel that NBA is not basically basketball but just a show that relies on physical strength, size and three pointers. I believe we both can agree that NBA is starting more and more to rely on European mentality and approach with players like Luca, Giannis, Jovic and on the other hand we watch lots American players perform great in Euroleague while no one appreciates them neither gave them a chance in NBA

If Spanoulis had as much of a chance as Giannis, or Luka, then that would be a whole different story. I'm an American so I'm genuinely asking... Why do you believe he would have fit better with Pop? I know the Spurs were/are famous for finding these international gems, but that was a really talented Spurs roster. From the video it looked like he was a shoot first kind of player..and that Spurs team was all about fundamentals and making the right pass. Was he a talented distributor as well? Was he really talented enough to take away shots from Duncan, Parker and Ginobili? He seems like he was a bucket but they Spurs already had Manu coming off the bench for instant offense. Was he a good spot up shooter too, or mainly just a scorer? The fact the Spurs wanted to give him a roster spot on that team says a lot about his skills but from the video I would have thought his best case scenario would have been on a rebuilding team where he could be THE guy. At least for a couple seasons so that the rest of the league could see that he could consistently score in NBA, then once he's made a name for himself go out and find a better team. Ironically, even though they were a good team, I think he would have been a great fit in Dallas.

Spanoulis was something like a shorter Manu Ginobili... unpredictable, very inteligent, very talented and skilled, born for the big moments, ice in his veins while the clock was running out... Manu was absolutely a better player but not by such a big margin that would make Spanoulis a bad NBA player... Spanoulis would have been a phenomenal NBA 2nd unit scorer with 20-25mins per game... let me put it this way... he was a better basketball player than Jamaal Crawford because Jamaal was shooting and scoring a lot but was never a true winner and his game was very one dimensional (scoring), Spanoulis was a complete guard, like Manu... And of course a guy that you can give him the ball at the end of the game and let him shoot the final shot and be happy about it is hard to find... and Spanoulis was 100% that guy... he could shoot from literally anywhere (infinite range) and his killer instinct while taking the final shot is I believe the best at least in the last 20 years of European basketball... Anyway... Spanoulis left the NBA because his ego got hurt by having an idiot for a coach (Van Gundy)... but leaving and not trying to play for the Spurs and show his talent to the whole world was a cowardly move that really destroyed his image in my mind... amazing basketball player, but he chose the easy love of the fans back home and the easier success of the Euroleague where he was the best over sticking it out in the NBA and giving every ounce of his soul to show the world that he was one of the best guards of his generation worldwide... for someone who calls himself a competitor that was the most cowardly move he could make...

Not every leader-type player can perform in much reduced role. Not every star is really versatile and not every coach can find the true potential in his players. Kukoc is a freaking legend and still people say he was pushed out of his playstyle to fit the Bulls team. Nobody can count how many underrated benchwarmers there are from Europe and even from US, that would have shiny career somewhere in Greece or Spain.

I mean I get the hype Spanoulis gets, he had a near mythical run with olympiakos and is one of the Goats in euroleague ( among Navarro, Diamantidis, bodiroga, Saras and some others ) but he is not even the best Greek guard of the last 20 years. Actually, Giannis, although being an Olympiakos fan, in his first ever interview right after the draft he said “I want to be like Dimitris Diamantidis, a Greek basketball player”.

Do your own due diligence and you are gonna find out that what he did in his career, has never been done by any individual. Not MJ, not Kobe, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE has made that many clucth shots.
