Nice! This is all really well presented. I am 46, attorney, Chicago. I finally had to come to the hard conclusion that we can live well, my husband and I work hard for what we have, but we also have to live in reality. Very few people have "big" lives, just like very few attorneys are arguing before the supreme court. Most of us are just average people, working hard, and trying to survive with fun things like a treat purchase or a vacation sprinkled in when the cosmos align...

I have to have my Luxury bags but when it comes to jewelry, clothing and other accessories, I go to thrift stores, Target, TJ Maxx etc. My only guilty pleasure is a nice bag once a year. ❤️ thank you for this video. You did a really good job with this video. Not everyone is as they appear to be. I learned that back in the early 1980s way before the days of influencers, even before the internet. I was working at a bank in a branch in one of Melbourne’s well known new money suburbs. We would have people coming in driving luxury cars, living in huge McMansions, dripping in diamonds and furs and I was bouncing their cheques most days because they were broke. It was all show to drum up business but there was nothing behind it. I have no idea how they slept at night with bankruptcy hanging over their heads all the time. I know I wouldn’t.

Such a good point Suzanne! I remember when we moved to a "fancier' town when I was 29 I felt so insecure that everyone had so much more than me. Then the girls teacher told me a lot of kids checks for their lunches bounced and then I went in the fancy houses to drop the girls off and they had rooms just totally empty. I realized I was doing just fine staying in my budget and all rooms furnished.

Nicely done Melinda, I enjoyed this. My Dad died when I was 29 but for the years that I had him he was always sharing tidbits of “ life “. Things I guess that he felt I needed to know and one thing he would always tell me was Don’t believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. It didn’t mean much to me as a little girl but as I’ve grown, aged and matured it means a lot. This was a little trip down memory lane. 🙂

Thanks Mel for being so candid! I discovered KZread content 3 years ago and I only subscribe after I have watched the creator for a period of time. I don’t like exaggerated speech, demeaning comments and inconsistent content. To me watching videos like yours is a luxury😊 I get to enjoy bags from a distance and get genuine information for items I am interested in. I watch Christian preachers too and am very careful with that. I am contented with my situation. I have not travelled for a while as I want to recover from a series of sickness, I live alone at last and learning to love myself and being able to have a job that is meaningful…all this is luxury to me. I do buy my luxury items but to me, a LV bag is just a bag I like, a Hermes Bastia works for me and a pair of gucci shoes just look good. I enjoy these items just like I enjoy my Longchamp, Marc Jacob’s and Sam Edelman.😂 no need to pretend…it’s much easier to live. This is an excellent video and something I’ve been thinking about for awhile now. It started when my KZread feed began “suggesting” a certain KZreadr who presents “luxury handbags” and presents herself with loving all things “luxury” and the “luxury lifestyle.” I love handbags and always have and it’s fun to see new bags that I may not necessarily see in the stores, so started watching. I seriously became more and more disturbed as this person had new bags in EVERY video. However, like you said, the room it was all filmed was anything but luxury. She showed her bedroom and there are shoes stored next to the bed and no bed made and carpet that looks like it has seen better days. I personally find it odd when you are touting literally hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of handbags and this is how you are living. It is NOT luxury. Listen, to each his own, but it’s definitely a study in the sociology of people and behavior. Super interesting, but, yup, it puts things in perspective for me. I really enjoy your channel, by the way, and find it very authentic.

Thank you so much! I totally agree. I found this person when another KZreadr made a hate video about me 2 days after my mom passed away. I had never heard of her before but she had some really ugly things to say about me on that persons video. I blocked everyone who was cruel to me on that video and that is how I found her channel. To each their own for sure but what she wrote about me showed me how insecure she was in her own skin. What she was upset about was something I had said about my own self, I had no idea she existed so it wasn't aimed at her.

Whether it is online or "back in my day" through glossy magazines, "influencers" were always around. I remember buying my monthly glamour magazines and drooling over the luxury bags and jewelry. Devouring what "everyone" was wearing that season and also all the traveling mags. Amazing that as much as things change, they stay the same. Even in those days, I never for once thought that I could "compete" with any of that, it was just a fantasy and it was like a great escape to see all those things. I think you are right though that the push of influencers to outdo each other and post constantly about their travels, their purchases etc., has to be taken down a notch. Especially when it is all contrived! Aside from all that, there is the aspect of security. We have all heard about these influencers posting their jewelry and travels and then read about them being stalked, followed and even robbed! I always have to question the mentality of someone that let's all their activities be known to the public. I fly under the radar, as they say. I don't want bad actors to come for me and what I have. Thanks for the video!

Melinda, I think this is one of your most thoughtful, introspective, and interesting videos. Don't get me wrong, I love all your luxury-centric videos as well, but this was a fascinating perspective and it really highlights why I enjoy your channel. You are grounded, down to earth, acutely aware of your privilege, yet completely transparent about it to the degree you are comfortable sharing (i.e you don't share your husband's profession or his face, you also honor your daughters' privacy as well). I really respect that. So many out there are presenting carefully curated narratives of what they want us to see, but I do feel like you are wholeheartedly genuine and honest. Thank you as always for keeping it real!

Super great video Melinda! I saw that Oprah episode that you mentioned. I can’t remember who the guest was that she had on for that particular segment but when Oprah said that she likes “crispy” sheets and changes them every two days, her guest called her out on it and said that the majority of hard working people do not have hired help to wash and change out their bedding every two days LOL! Btw, you are so incredibly down to earth and as a side note, your curly hair looks fabulous in this vlog! 💛

Great topic and I think you covered it in a very tactful manner. I don't really use social media that much. I think that although it can be entertaining and informative, unfortunately it can also become very toxic for some people. It does concern me to see how it affects many young people's self-esteem and emotional health. I personally only watch videos from You Tubers who project genuine, and positive energy. I feel that the older I get the easier it becomes to recognize people that are not authentic, and I no longer have the energy nor the desire to have those people in my life whether it's through social media or in real person.

A workmate of mine went to the Maldives and said she saw a good looking couple who spent the whole day taking videos/photos of one another. But during dinnertime, they sat at the restaurant on their phones the whole time and didn't speak a single word to one another. She observed this the entire 5 days that she was at this resort, so it wasn't just a one off day.

Ooh I like the curly hair, Melinda, suits you. Love Hannah’s channel, it was her MLM videos that came to my attention first, then the influencer ones. On the internet we interact with people who probably wouldn’t be in our social circle ordinarily and because we ‘click’ online for 20 minutes, we tend to think we have the same level of wealth when we maybe don’t. I’m old enough not to compare my life to anyone else but it must be difficult for some, especially if younger. 99% of us will save money from at least one area in our life to pay for something else we love. Nobody has it all, all at the same time.

Some of the luxury videos and KZreadrs that buy and show a lot of expensive handbags in their videos are quite misleading and send out a very unhealthy message. I've noticed some showing expensive bags and you get to see bits of their not so luxurious home in the background. A rack of running shoes beside your bed LOL! Hilarious but true. Another KZreadr recently bought an Hermes Birkin after spending over $10,000 in pre-spend in order to be offered the bag but her engagement ring is a cubic zircon. Surely it would be a better investment to fix your home or have a real diamond engagement ring instead of spending $10,000 on a handbag.

What a great question: What is a luxurious lifestyle? I think the answer is as different as there are viewers. Personally, a luxurious lifestyle is one that is free of family, health, or money worries. Owning your home, having a garden, good friends, and loving someone that is luxurious. My family members in south Texas don't have lots of money but them are content and raise contented children. Anyway that is my 2 cents.

A Lux-Life for me is a paid in full tiny home, a garden, some chickens, a few little doggies, and being able to foster older ones. Having people whom you care about that care about you, being able to pay your bills and have a good emergency fund, have good healthy food, nice cup of coffee in the morning, and a nice fizzy drink in the afternoon. Also being able to walk in the morning, spend time with God and nature in a sunny/warm climate and be able to help people when they are in a pickle or a bind. I have beautiful bags that I have collected over 35 years and an awesome sunglass collection but other than that I am pretty frugal. The older I am getting the more I am selling off because I would rather help those elder dogs have a good final chapter.

This was a very good video and you did it well. Yes we all have to or had to take a step back from consuming some over the top content. I agree with you what is a “Luxury Lifestyle”… just because I like a few designer bags and fly business class on international flights does not equate to a “luxury Lifetyle”. I think many of these folk are and got caught up with trying to keep up with the KZread Jones’. Yes beware all the influencers I say. I prefer Tubers who are authentic….and not part of the latest it bag tribe…when I see that I know they are just chasing views. I just hope people in general understand that the influencer lifestyle is really contrived and not real 95% of the time. To me a real luxury lifestyle doesn’t need sponsorships or to plug product so if they are getting sponsors and plugging products that “influencing” in a job just like any job. Do not be fooled. If you really have it so great why would you plug products…lab grown diamonds and roses? Paaleese! Its obvious to me it’s all a hustle to get free stuff and its a job. You are right everyone has a different definition but I do not think that buying material things equates to luxury. That just equates with liking to spend money and that is ok just do not get it twisted with these influencer folk. If you have your health, family and can pay your bills and not worry about the mortgage, food, gas and the basics you are good. All that spending does not equate to happiness. We all need to appreciate the simple things even though we do like the nice things too…so I remind myself of that everyday. Sorry this was so long and thanks again for the video…it is needed.❤

  • @LuxPurselove

    @LuxPurselove

Thank you! I agree with all your points except sponsored content. I am very choosy who I will work with and I do very few sponsored videos. YT takes a lot of time and work and the pay doesn't reflect that so it is nice to get something extra once in awhile. But with that said I cannot stand channels that every video it is just to sell me their outfit, shoes, you name it. Some take the sponsorships to where that is all they do now. I totally agree just buying luxury things does not equate a luxury lifestyle. Health and family, food and a roof over your head and love do. Thanks for sharing!

The more money we are making, the less I’m buying into these lies! It’s funny how people buy it but also, they really have totally unrealistic expectations of what wealthy means. We are considered wealthy by definition and I can guarantee you, that we flu first class only a handful of times and it’s because we had points. We don’t own a mansion since we live in California and no we don’t have 10-15 millions to put on a house. We don’t own a yacht or rent the penthouse of the most luxurious hotel. It happens that I love luxury handbags and some jewelry but I don’t walk head to toe in luxury rtw. I’m laughing when I hear some say if you own a Birkin you should always fly first class and have that lavish lifestyle. So very few in the world can do and have it all! Most of these influencers are just fumes, but still, people believe it. Even with a big income, we still have to prioritize and make choices.

I think the trick for watching any influences is to go back to their first videos and see how they have progressed. The people I watch now I've been watching for over 5 years and you can see how their hard work has paid off and what they can afford now. There are also certain people I don't watch anymore because the endless, ridiculously expensive high-end hauls are just annoying. I don't think anybody should publicise having 100s of thousands of dollars worth of diamonds in their house. It's not a secure way to live.

I also remember Oprah once had a sneer at fake flowers and how crass they are. She said her home is filled only with fresh flowers and would not entertain anything that wasn't real. Obviously real flowers are nicer. But they are also expensive. To have a constant delivery of fresh flowers is out of many people's budget, so to brighten their homes, some make do with silk or plastic that can last for years. I thought at the time how out of touch she is. (And no, I don't have any fake flowers in my home but it still annoyed me.)

And then there ARE those influencers you see in first class, flying to Dubai, dripping with jewels, who aren't faking it, but what they are forced to do to attain that lifestyle "would make Caligula blush," and yes, that was a Morrissey quote.

I have seen those videos and what those girls go through is beyond horrifying. Not worth the price they pay for the rich lifestyle.

Wow, so mentally draining to portray a fake life, actually sad to do that and debilitating. Waking up to see a wall of sneakers does seem creepy!

Honestly it’s the lies for me. I don’t care if you have real or fake bags/jewelry, just be honest. Don’t lie to subscribers. That’s a huge ick for me.
