Why the lack of success in Toronto? OverDrive - Hour 2 - 5/7/2024

Ойын-сауық

Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by former NHL defenceman Chris Pronger to discuss the process of locker clean out day after being eliminated from the playoffs, the major decisions facing the Maple Leafs organization, why the lack of success in Toronto, the long break in the series between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers, a Stanley Cup worthy matchup between the Stars and Avalanche and more. The boys also chat about the future of John Tavares in Toronto, can the Maple Leafs can just let Mitch Marner walk as a unrestricted free agent, how would the public react if the team announced their plan to extend Marner at the management’s media availability on Friday and Hockey Canada’s decision to bring Pierre-Luc Dubois, Brandon Hagel and Nick Paul to the World Championship and send projected number 1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini and Adam Fantilli home.

Let's be fair here, he isn't saying anything the average fan hasn't said for a long time now. Paying 4 guys on a team of 21? players half your budget is unwise use of resources, however you want to put it. If they were producing like they did mid season, nobody would care but they aren't and even got more MIA when it counted most, in the playoffs.

Been watching the Leafs since 1962 and since the 70s (with the exception of the early 90s ) they seem more interested in signing a "Superstar" that they can hype and sell merch (they always sold tickets) than building a solid team. I had hope when Shanny appeared, but then he went out and signed JT, which imo was a superstar and a rushed rebuild. The addition of JT encouraged their younger stars to ask that question "if JT can get 11mil why can't I, I score just as much" and here we are with too much money tied up in 4 or 5 guys.

Jeff O´Neill is absolutely right regarding Marner! Why in hell would you like to sign a guy, that already showed you eight times, that he is absolutely useless in he post season? It's insanity to even think about something like that!

PROBLEM over the past 8 seasons: During the regular season, the Core-4 scored at will but the goals dried up in the postseason. Craig Berube a defense first head coach will teach each player the 200-ft game, but when it comes playoff time, how will he get them to score more? That seems to be the job of psychologists.

You spelt Toronto incorrectly. Toronto is where players go when they want to get paid and don't need to really dig deep and sacrifice to have playoff success. I mean, the media and the fans whine for a bit at the end of the season, but at the beginning and middle of the seasons, the media and fans chant how you're the best in the league and how you should be in it for all the regular season awards, but again, you get paid in the end.

There is one problem with Mitch Marner. I don't really think he will get as much money anywhere else, because the GMs are not blind and they all see his inability to elevate his game in the play off. So I seriously doubt, that they will offer him what he is expecting.

It's really simple. They gave JT way too much money, gave Marner too much money too soon, gave Willie too much too soon & rewarded him sitting out, couldn't keep Freddy or properly replace him, couldnt bolster the blue line and couldn't bolster the depth. Then when the guys getting overpaid didnt show they had the BALLS to fight for their life, and play in the right areas in the playoffs, from puck drop in gm1 of a series to the very end; they kept those guys. And they have a weak culture. JT is an ineffective captain. He's a perennial minus, never had 50goals, never had 100points, never won a trophy in the NHL, barely has won in the playoffs, and has the personality of a wet paper bag. The guy got Panarin, Mackinon, Matthews, Draisitl (soon to be), and McDavid money. He is a very good 2nd line, alternate captain, $6.5-8million player. Marner got 10.9 off his entry level, that's what he should have got on a 2nd or 3rd. Willie just got 11, he's not worth more than 9. Makar gets 9 man. They could have kept players of O'Rielly and Acari's type/calibre. Had a good goalie tandem. Gotten another good dman or 2. Or a really good dman and another decent one. There's so much you can do when 4fwds aren't like 55-60% of your cap. With Rielly it's gotta be almost 2/3rds. I took so much heat sharing my opinion over the years. I called it the day they signed JT that they will not win.

It all hinged on Tavares - when they signed him - he was the 3rd best center on the team. Paying him all that - while the other three were all on entry level contracts - ensured that they were all going to get overpaid - none of this is hard - what is hard to believe is that they kept doing it for 7 yrs

O dog is always too hard on leafs goalies, every starting goalie except campbell when they leave they go on to have a soild career. i.e freddy and reimer, and if you argue reimer hes been a soild NHL goalie on bad teams he has a career .910 average, if the leafs play better team defense you mask your goalies flaws, they do not do that you exacerbate them.

Leafs are very successful! 2023 Revenue was $281M. Its a business, it does not matter if the team is winning, it matters that the business is making MONEY! So when you say it has been a failure for 8 years it only reflects games. As for making money, MLSE is amazingly successful.
