Tavares's post season comments serve as a reminder why he isn't a leader and captain material. The moment asked for honesty and critical reflection. Instead he went with the same old same old, "were right there, the margins are slim." Nobody wants to hear that crap.

If Tavares was a true Captain he would recognize the situation that major change needs to happen and know that he is at the end of his career and ceremoniously offer up the C to Matthews without anyone asking him.

Im all for trading Marner..its clear hes a scared little boy..he wont even take the puck to the net. He just cant perform when it matters most. Hes had 8 plus years now to prove himself..but if your going to trade Marner, you have to be very careful and take some time with it. As much as Leafs fans want him to move on, hes still a world class hockey player and theres a chance he goes somewhere else and thrives..your probably not going to win that trade, but you need to make sure you dont lose it to the point where you look foolish if your Tre.

It’s extremely unlikely. Looking at everything as a package, at best , he’s a 3 liner 3 million. To old to slow not exciting and a non leader. Nylander looked like he just received a total double hip replacement, feet as flat as pancakes. Marner was unaware as to who was on the ice. Question is who’s paying these guys? For such lazy hockey . That coach is non motivational in exciting these people to enter ot.

Think back to Auston Matthews' introspective, gloomy attitude and words after he failed to hit the '70 goal mark' in Game 82. With the Leafs' first round playoff series then imminent and nothing really on the line, wouldn't a real 'Team first' guy (which is surely what you want a captain to be?) have simply sat out the game in the first place: 69 goals, rest up for the Bruins series, and send a very positive messge by doing so? Didn't happen, though, did it, and we all know how things went from there? Sorry, but I don't really see Auston Matthews as the kind of captain this team needs, at this exact point in time.
