    I've driven the SEL version of the Ioniq 5 at Round Rock Hyundai, along with many other EV's and this car is by far the smoothest, quietest, most luxurious, comfortable, and most fun to drive than any other!

    Ours was delivered 2 months ago and we totally love it. It's the ultimate with tech pack and is the nicest car to drive. We've owned various BMW, Range Rovers etc and this is as good to drive as any and better than most. Love the performance (0-60 is

    When you are inside of Ioniq 5, you can feel some unique airiness, which is difficult to feel in other cars. If you're considering electric car, you should definitely test drive this.

    We test drove it and my wife and I both disliked it for different reasons. I’m coming from a Tesla Model 3 and my wife is coming from a Honda Prelude. Compared to those two cars the IONIQ 5 felt like the big floaty vehicle that it is. I really don’t like how SUVs feel/handle. Wife also disliked the interior (lack of good centre console storage, etc.) and the UI-could never see what we wanted, like the speed, on the instrument cluster at a glance.

    @@kenyaswallow5782- my wife really preferred the size and handling of her Prelude to the Ioniq 5, as well as some aspects of the interior, yes. (And her Prelude is in amazing shape; the interior is like new. The car only has 146,000 km.) But really, the point is that she didn’t love the Ioniq 5 enough to buy it, not that she preferred a 21-year old Prelude. Those were not the only two options. Obviously she wanted something new, which is why we were car shopping. She wanted something a little higher off the ground that’s easier for her aged mother to get into, with a little more cargo space and more modern safety features, and something a little better suited to winter. But when we drove things like the RAV4, Lexus NX, and Ioniq 5, they all felt too big. She eventually chose a Lexus UXh (a hybrid AWD hatch), which is smaller than the Ioniq 5 and has much better handling and ergonomics. (And we’ll be able to take delivery of a 2023 UXh before this fall, unlike the 1+ year wait we were quoted for an Ioniq 5.) I would have preferred a pure EV, but what can I say? Neither of us really loved the Ioniq 5.

    We got ours last month... It surpassed all our expectations. Best car we've ever owned. By the way, i was shocked to here about the lack of fast chargers in the UK. Here in The Netherlands they're everywere... But we charge at home at 22kw

    I was surprised too, we have fast chargers in pretty much every single town in New Zealand, and we have a far lower uptake rate of EVs than The Netherlands. It’s just a case of governments investing in the network I guess, as a lot of the chargers installed in the smaller towns are part funded by govt green investment grants.

    Unfortunately, most homes in the UK don't have a 3 phase supply so a **max** (full house) draw of 100A only just matches that. Most of the time the chargers are 7.6kw or 32A

    @@Firecul In the US 100A would be the baseline for a flat, if that flat did not have in-unit heating but rather drew hot water and heat from a central unit in the building. For a detached house or terraced house/townhouse or a flat with self-contained heat, 200A, or in some cases 100A for the house and another 100A for the garage if it's a detached house with a physically separate garage and the house is running fossil fuel for the heat. And for larger houses, especially with electric heat, 400A is quite common, or again 200A for the house and 100A or 200A for a separate garage.

    @@danielbliss8014 Wow really that is huge. In the Netherlands the default is 40A single phase or 3x 25A for 3phase. The biggest we can go here is 3x80A but that would be quite expensive already. A little while ago some bitcoin minder wanted to go bigger in his garage.. That even got to the news... Most people i know have 1x40Amp. We do have 230volts here however.

We had 60A a while back but perhaps 30 years ago they became no longer legal and with a house I bought in 1996 with a 60A panel with plug-in fuses the bank gave the mortgage on condition that I as soon as possible replace the 60A with a 100A service with breakers......which I had completed just a month after closing on the property.

    I test drove this at my local dealer, it's a great ev. The only reason why I didn't buy one is because the dealer wanted $53k usd for a se trim.

    I've got one as well (about 20000km driven) and I would like to add to your great review (thanks for that!!): if you've got the chance to charge the car at home, it is MUCH more convenient than all the combustion engine cars, because I just plug it in coming home and have never have to stop at a gas-/loading-station, except I drive really long ways. And then you normally do it along motorways, where the hyperchargers (350kW) are located. So: nearly no waiting at all!

    Great review Steve. I also just passed 1000 miles on my i5 and love it. Mine is an RWD, SEL, white (& light grey interior--very sharp!) As happy as I am with the car, it's key that new owners stay realistic about range & charging. Before buying, I figured that its "303 mile" range turned into a 200 mile range after considering highway speeds and recharging before hitting 10% so you don't end up stranded; and that's proven pretty accurate in actual practice. I live in Minnesota, USA and it's handled snow, ice, rain and gravel roads quite well and its 225 HP is plenty peppy-enough for getting on the highway. We've got enough DC charge stations that I could make the 300 mile trip home from my Chicago-area dealer, but took more planning than it would have with a Tesla. But at $15-20K less and a solid & comfortable build quality, definitely worth it. I chose RWD for the much better range. SEL offered the optimal set of "extras" and I remain happy with that choice, too. Enjoy!!! 😃

    I heard that the Ioniq 5 in US market have red turn signal lights. Sounded kind of odd to me since those sold everywhere else (except for NA) have the original amber turn signal light setup. I'm genuinely curious about it... Is there some kind of law or consumer demand for vehicles sold in US to have red turn signal setup? I don't think the manufacture would bother to do extra stuff (which would be extra production cost) unless it is required by law or demanded by consumers.

    @@ghostray3252 the turn signals are amber (orange) here in US..I own a SEL model and they are very bright as well as they are integrated into headlights on the SEL & limited models on SE models they are not integrated but still amber.

    16k in mine since September 21. Fantastic car, charge at home and work, no issues whatsoever. Did over 100k in previous Ioniq, this is a different class again though. I wouldn't swap it for that Lambo that's for sure! Well only to sell the Lambo buy the Ioniq back and pocket the spare cash!

    Great review and I'm looking forward to test driving the Ioniq5 myself soon. I'm also really looking forward to seeing what the final production design on the Ioniq 6 is going to be, as I'd prefer a saloon rather than a hatchback. I've had a Kona 64kWh Ultimate model, (my first EV), for almost a year now and have been very impressed by the experience so far. I honestly can't see me going back to an ICE car now.

    I've had mine for two weeks and am driving at no cost - I have a solar PV system and a Zappi charger which ensures I don't use grid power. It's the only way to go.

    Great review of the Ioniq 5, Steve. Good to see the fantastic roads around Beachy Head/Eastbourne (where we met, if you remember me!). I've had my Ioniq 5 RWD, 73K/W for 6 months and 7,000 miles and love it. So refined/quiet and some great well thought out features. Only issue to date is the DAB radio -sometimes cuts out.

    I bought my first Hyundai (an i30N) 18 months ago, after years of German stuff, and apart from loving the way the car drives, the big difference between this, and the German stuff I've owned previously is that the Hyundai has just been painlessly, unfailingly reliable. None of the silly, niggling faults that BMWs and Audis seem to consistently suffer with. Everything works, every day. It goes in for a service, you pay the agreed price (between 40 and 50% cheaper than BMW's), it comes out again, and runs reliably to the next one. Nice long warranty to fall back on if needed as well. This, or the upcoming 6 will undoubtedly be my first EV.

    I live in Canada. I have pre-orders in on 2 cars, this and a Genesis GV 60. Can't wait for one or the other to become available. Probably not until Q3 of 2022 though. In the meantime I am jealous of all of you that have your own I5. Cheers.

    I’m in BC. On wait list at 5 dealerships. 2-3 yr wait. Uggghh! A local Genesis dealer had a slightly used top Ultimate trim. Wanted almost $19,000 over MSRP. I got it for an hour to test drive. I was already in love, but after testing….I’m obsessed. I almost went for it. But reality set in and I will wait. When you’re truly in love you can wait 😂😂😂

    We got ours before Christmas, replacing my wife's M135i. Absolutely love the car! It's airiness in the cabin combined with the compact size gives the best of both worlds. And that flat floor...I have a classic Citroen DS and it reminds me of this cabin...not sportscar but a comfortable lounge!

    Thanks for the review! A few thoughts from an EV owner of, now, 15 months. Charging issues are mostly about a basic reshuffling of our time - but only if you can charge at home. If you have to rely on outside sources regularly, it's a major pain. But in many places, the networks are already building out, and planning trips is not an issue. When assessing running costs, 1000 miles is simply not a relevant milestone because they consist of more than "fuel" (not to mention the ownership experience that includes updates and support). For ICE cars, particularly as the miles pile on, even if nothing goes wrong, there are several fluid changes - lubricants and coolants - along the way, and, far more than EVs with good re-gen, brakes will need attention much more often. Even further down the road when an ICE rig needs, say, a motor or transmission, the parity with batteries will flip the other way - and that is inevitable. From the data coming back, too, motors may never become any kind of even minor issue, as they are execeptionally reliable. Lastly, battery and charging tech is rapidly changing. Ten-minute, 80% charges are already nearing production, as are batteries with much higher energy densities, safer materials, and much lower costs. All is to say, the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, the Model 3/Y are already pretty incredible, but this is just the beginning, and massive improvement will be the way over the next few years. And, though only a part of the equation, don't think petrol prices will every drop to levels again where they will ever make sense.

    Have had my Ioniq 5 (SE with long range battery). I have been unable to put into words how it feels to drive it. So, I really was so pleased to hear you say it's deeply impressive and refined. I agree totally. It sounds corny, but after every drive I feel like I've meditated. And today a young lady waved me down in a parking lot to tell me what a "cool" car it was. Planning my first road trip in a couple of months. Nervous about charging on the road, but must start sometime. And, here in U.S. new, fast chargers are popping up all over.

    I owned the top of the line one for 4 months. And I can say this is truly a luxury car. It's quiet, rides very smooth, and 4.6s fast. I can charge the thing less than 20 minutes on the road trip. Only thing I could maybe ask for is a bit of bigger trunk space for road tripping.

    So far I am 7k miles in with the ultimate spec RWD and over all I still love it! Some of the plastics annoy me a little, the breaks can be a little odd in an quick stop and the cup holders aren't the best but over all yes, I love it. Great range, great charging abilities, smooth drive and handling with an over all nice up market interior.

    I have been test driving this and the KIA EV6 and for me the EV6 is the winner. They are both based on the same platform and are, no doubt, fantastic cars. The suspension of the EV6 is even better and its 4WD version is just jaw-dropping, when you hit the pedal (not the 600HP, version which must be utterly nuts). The EV6 draws less power and hence has a much better range with the same battery (someone who likes SUVs made it taller😣). I feel a little lost in the Ionic cockpit while totally at home in the EV6 and I believe it is even more quiet inside (could have been the tires - not sure). I did not see you talk about the 360 degree artificially created top view it generates on the secondary screen when driving slowly, that you can get for just a few bucks extra, so far Rolls Royce has that in their top line?! The semi-autonomous driving implementation is also very well done. They are just not afraid to use smart technology - love it. For borderline crazy speed junkies living in Germany, with no speed limit, there is the nearly 600 HP version of the EV6 out now, which is just not from this world. Hyundai and KIA are both also an amazing bang for the buck, and caught up in technology ultra fast and are now absolutely taking the lead in that segment for owners not focused on prestige, but on smart and advances technology and safety, as well as comfort and a really good price for what you get. I am not so sure anymore about the manufacturers future here in my home country - Germany. I hope they will learn from that. For those who want to spend less money KIA is launching a new version of the Nero EV, which is nearly as genius as these two, but no 800V technology and no rear looking cameras in the cockpit while blinking, but by design with a great range and bigger battery to start with. Another company that is not a prestige car, but you get great quality for your money is Skoda - so far they have only one electric car, I tried it too, but to my taste it is not bad, nowhere near the mentioned Korean cars, but they are now working on new electric designs and I am very curious what they will come up with.

    The EV6 is great but at least where I live you have to cough up substantially more money. The small advantage of the EV6 isn't worth the higher price.

    I'm on the waiting list for one, and can hardly wait. Charging infrastructure in the US seems to be in a better place, though I'll almost always be plugging in over night at home so it should be just fine. Sadly, it's a crazy long wait right now.

    I had to check when this video was made. I bought Inonic 5 last week and drove it 700 km from Central Finland to Lapland without spending a minute of waiting charging. I did charging only on 150 to 300 kWh chargers when I had to stop for food or toilet and that was enough. No need to wait for charging. At least here in Finland it looks that these super fast chargers are reality at least on major roads.

    Same experience. It's a wonderful car except for 2 things. Charging, as you say, is just too slow. 2ndly, it needs a rear wiper. Apart from that it is the nicest car I've driven and I've had Lexus G and L series, and BMW 7s. This thing feels like its from the future and the AWD perfomance is impressive.

    I prefer the styling of the EV6, but the I5 is a close second. But when you get down to it, they are basically the same car with slight differences, and both are extremely worthy of being your first EV.

    If you can charge at home, you will charge there 95% of the time, if you are a typical driver, I think. I've had this car since February and it's just terrific (a part from the missing wiper in the back).

    The Hyundai Ioniq 5 seems like a very promising vehicle. It’s exterior has a futuristic clean look. The parametric pixel headlights are amazing! It offers unique features on the inside which is good against the competition. The center console slides all the way back and can be used as a desk for the back passengers. The front relaxation seats recline all the way back. It has a top speed of 150 and charges in under 30 minutes. I think this suv will sell like hotcakes.

    Why do UK auto journalists review electric cars as if the only way to charge one is public infrastructure? Simple rule: do not buy an electric car if you're going to be reliant on public charging. You should only buy an electric car if you can charge it overnight at home. This appears to be a far bigger issue in the UK than it does here in the US.

    Interesting how Steve Sutcliffe approaches charging as an ICE driver. When you have an electric car, you don't very often fill it up from almost empty, when you're in the middle of a journey. Instead, you fill it up when you're not using it - so speed of charging is not such a big issue.

    It's now here, going from BMW to Hyundai, honestly the Hyundai quality is as good as the BMW, perhaps the badge snobbery is outdated, just my opinion obviously, just really happy with car and it woeks brilliantly for the family, plus free fuel yesterday at the shops😀

    >30k miles into my AWD Ioniq 5, in the UK and some europe trips and I love it. Agree that the ride is great on rough roads (which is most of the UK now) Two things though, Steve seemed to imply that Sport setting changed the suspension - it doesn't I don't think, just the throttle and steering map. Adaptive dampers only coming with the N version I believe. I'd like to be able to buy with just those rather than all the track gimmicks on the N. Secondly no reviewer has mentioned the overactive traction control. I expected Steve to, as he likes to press on (he once arrived to a track day I was on in a Bentley with the brakes literally smoking hot). In the Ioniq, on less than smooth roads, the TC quite often has a wobbly round bends when feeding the power in. Turn it off and the handling is great for such a heavy softly sprung car and there's loads of grip and poise though so maybe this is his default way to appraise a cars chasis? They need to dial the TC down a bit IMHO.

    Great review. Got mine on order. Unfortunately a 9 month wait. Luckily I've got a 3.0 tdi A6 to keep me happy until then although the price of fuel massively takes the enjoyment out of it..

    Impressive that you did the research to find out that Luc Donckerwolke designed this. He has also helped design Hyundai/Kia's 'Genesis' lineup. He has also designed a number of Bentleys, so if the Genesis GV80 looks like a Bentley, you now know why..

    I really like the way these look. If they truly are as good as reviews suggest, the western manufacturers need to watch out. The retro futuristic styling reminds of a Polo or a Golf sized vehicle despite the fact that this is basically MPV sized... clever design. Just a shame the charging infrastructure in the UK is years out yet from being adequate.

    Really interested but with electricity prices now 28p per kWh and likely to rise by 40% is the cost differential now reducing again, would be interested in peoples views? Really interesting in this car.

    Infrastructure starts at home - charge overnight from a home charger and hey presto, a week's worth of range for most :)

    Hyundai Ioniq 5 is now at the top of my list if I ever purchase another car. If my telco data support center job had not been sent to India might be purchasing the 2023 when it comes out.

    I'm sure it is lovely in the handful of US states where you can buy it. Just don't leave ... there's no dealers who can work on it. Maybe the support is better in other regions (Europe, for example). Might be a great car in theory, but the broad support for it just isn't there yet.

    Yeah it is pretty clear that he isn't used to living with an EV, doesn't quite get it yet. Yes, it takes hours to charge on a lampost, but you don't have to sit in the car, you can do it at night while sleeping in your bed!

    Recommended range is 80% of 240 miles at a 100% charge. Add battery degradation of 3% a year and that range after 5 years is 170. Slow charging rates make this EV just a toy.

    In my 2020 version of the Ioniq, which is quite a different car, I have averaged 5 miles per kwh over 15 months / 10,000 miles of driving, usually in eco mode, because why not. It would be helpful if journalists started to quote miles per kwh as a standard measure of performance. In this case the journo could have used hyundai"s app to easily calculate average mpkwh for his two weeks of driving, so he could have balanced his range anxiety against real world data. And any EV driver with a bit of experience will tell you that the ioniq 5's battery is huge and day to day you just won't worry about range, because you'll be topping up as you go, unless you're doing a long journey in which case you'll plan a meal stop near a rapid charger, and have a backup plan because it's not that the charging infrastructure isn't there, it's that it's unreliable.

    I imagine if the Ioniq 5 wear a European badge, it will cost as least 25K extra with fewer options and be less sophisticated Mechanically and Materialistically due to Cost Cutting, i think 🇬🇧
