Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Is this the perfect upgrade to the Tesla Model 3? That's what I want to figure out. We need a bigger car and want it to be an EV and the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 could be the one.
Paul Maric gets behind the wheel of Hyundai's all-new Ioniq 5 to see whether it's worth the switch from the Tesla Model 3.

I have an Ioniq 5 (Project 45) Gravity Gold (with Solar Roof). I traded in my BMW X1 and I never thought I'd end up buying a Hyundai, ever! But I've had my P45 since Sept 2021 and I love it. It's a real head-turner around town, no other car looks like it on the road. I don't have any problems at higher speeds on twisty UK country lanes or motorway cruising. This is by far the best car I've ever owned. It's just so dam hard to get hold of them, even in the UK.

Good to hear. Replacing my wife's M135i and two weeks to go until our Gravity Grey arrives, one of small first batch to arrive down under this year. She's loved the BMW as have I but there's something about this car that grabs me it has the best packaged combination of everything you need in a car and the coolest looks!

I'm from Adelaide and now I live in Berlin and have an I.5 Project 45 H Drive Ultimate spec. I've got 2500 kms on the clock. It has a couple of features missing with your test sample, being the Solar roof, the Head Up Display, and BlueLink (the Hyundai OTA app that allows you to monitor and control certain features of the vehicle) The solar roof is excellent. On a sunny day you can leave the outside air fan ventilation on with a window or two slightly open to allow the heat load in the vehicle not to climb too high, without jeopardizing the security system. It helps that the solar roof has additional insulation underneath it plus we have acoustic glass all around which I also feel has an insulating effect .....although admittedly Berlin summers are a world away from an full force Adelaide heat wave. You can program the rear window to run the heating elements which will melt snow on contact, and the battery's Heat Pump can precondition your battery on a cold day as well as pre heat the vehicle ready for your journey. The vast majority of car owners in large cities in Germany do not have garages so a warm car in the middle of winter is a blessing. The cars HVAC system works with GPS and knows instantly when you are about to enter a tunnel, a dusty road, stop start or idling traffic, roadworks etc. or use the windscreen washers and will automatically set the HVAC to filtered internal air recycling and off again when the parameters change. The head up display is fabulous, bright and fully adjustable so no matter the driver and their individual driving position it's always positioned perfectly. In stop star traffic it will prompt you of other vehicles whereabouts even if the navigation is not in use or you haven't activated the Driver Assistance suite. Because most of us park on the street, the Auto Park function is very welcome. This is a large long wheelbase car, way bigger than the surrounding VW Golfs and BMW 3's and the ability to seek a car parking spot at 20kmh and have the car sweep into either a parallel park or a tail in 90' park swiftly is awesome. You do need a quiet street before you do this if you intend to get out of the car while it does its parking ballet lest you incur the incredulous shouts and horns of drivers waiting behind. NOTE: I would never try the auto park function in the snow as the sensors may be rendered inoperable because of snow build up. BlueLink allows you to plan your journey at home including charging stops and send it to the car's navigation. The Hyundai app and navigation will also pro actively steer you around roadworks particularly on Autobahns well ahead of time and can very quickly identify alternate routes on the fly. Even without the navigation system on it will warn of stationary traffic ahead on the Autobahn. We've yet to test the car in the depths of winter, but I suspect with heating on, heated steering wheel, window defrost front and rear and Highway Driving Assistance running on a trip between Berlin and Copenhagen will see the real world driving range plummeting. Thank goodness for a decent fast charging network......although (and this is not talked about much) it is not recommended that you fast charge your car to 100% regularly or even consecutively or risk permanently damaging the battery. So an 80% top up is realistically all you should be running during a long trip. The last comment I'll make is about the paint. We have the matt paint Galaxy Gold. This paint requires you to hand wash the car or risk the buffing of the spinning barrel washers of automatic car washes and the residual wax on the washing straps creating irreparable shiny blotches on the paintwork. Again perhaps not an issue in Australia where you can easily wash the car by hand in a private driveway or a car wash bay within an apartment block.....I have to wash the car with a bucket and hand pump spray on the street which is far from ideal. Bird droppings and tree-sap has to be removed promptly or risk a permanent blemish. Otherwise I cannot really fault the car. We've had it for just over 4 months and it turns heads wherever we go. Current allocations are all taken and there is supposed to be a long waiting list ......yet in Berlin I've only seen one other on the road ( clearly a press car with all the cameras and GoPros hanging off it) and a white Ioniq5 at a charge station......so where are they all??

I've had mine for a few weeks now and its been all good so far. It certainly turns heads in the UK as there is nothing like it on our roads. Range is pretty decent as well and is very easy to drive and a lot better than you might think. Strangely pictures don't really don't give you any indication of its actual size. My only to gripes are the lack of the rear wiper which is nuts, plus the voice recognition is a joke, but then again its no worse then Volkswagen, Audio & BMW from my experience. You just get used to Alexa and compare everything to that. Overall very pleased so far.

Brilliant review - both constructively critical and unbiased. I had to smile at your repeated comparisons with your Model 3 which I completely understand as I also have one. I've just ordered an Ioniq 5 here in the UK where there are more variants offered. Unlike you, I'm less enamoured of a sporty ride and actually find the Model 3 quite uncomfortable under some road conditions (especially rubbish UK road surfaces!) so a softer and more compliant ride is very welcome. I found the Kia EV6 rather claustrophobic inside but, then, it did have a black interior. Hope you find a successful replacement for your Tesla. Thanks again!

Thanks for the great review Paul. I had registered for reserving a Ioniq5 on the appointed day however at the last minute I was informed no cars were allocated for my area code. Very disappointing to say the least to wait for such a long time to be left out at the last minute. However my interest in the car is still strong and I've been looking forward to a local road test review. The performance of the suspension on the atypical roads we have in Australia was an eye-opener as most overseas tests have only had good things to say about the ride. One thing I picked up on an overseas test was driving in rain the lack of a rear screen wiper was an issue, regardless of Hyundai's claim that aerodynamics cause air coming down through the rear spoiler to clear the screen. During the review I saw this didn't work even at high speed although the excellent rear view camera was able to be used as an alternative to the rear view mirror.

If you use the Tesla Wall Connector or an appropriate public AC charger you can charge at 11kW.

You are always my go-to guy for an objective review Paul! I pre-registered to go on the purchase list and then found out that they are not selling cars to anyone more than 10 km or so from one of their 'curated' dealers. I am really annoyed at Hyundai for not telling me this in March when I put my name down. I would not have bothered. If you look at their FaceBook page you will see many unhappy would-be customers. The whole launch day was an unmitigated disaster. So here in Newcastle (population nudging half a million people) it's just not going to happen for us regional people until they increase their dealer network for electric cars. You cannot order this from Hyundai either, you can just register your interest. Given there were 270 cars in the initial allocation, with > 12,000 registrations, and the next shipment not due to mid-next year, good luck getting one! We went the next day and ordered an iX 50 BMW which has a build slot of week one 2022. Yes, it is a lot more expensive I know, and not comparable. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course but at least you are not going to mistake it for anything else! Thanks again for your great reviews - keep up the good work!

Great review again Paul. Comparison to your Tesla would be interesting. Really like this EV but for a 4 person family it sounds like the boot isn’t big enough which is a real shame as I thought this could be the family EV I would buy one day. We currently have a Kia Sorento that we love and works well for our family. Would be interested to see if our 4 suitcases would fit and how much room that left.

Just to give you an idea. The boot space in a Sorrento with the 3rd row folded down is at around 616 litres, its 527 in the Ioniq 5. But I think you get another 50 litres in the frunk. So the size difference is smaller than you might think.

Not good for those of us who won’t give Elon our money.

Great review, Paul. It appears none of the car designers go to car parks, where you have to put the thing between two other vehicles. Instead they think the summon feature (slow) will appease drivers... Did you have a chance to test out the app you would use as the owner of the car? I noticed the EV6 has storage for the cargo blind, but not the I5. Bit odd, particularly given the need to eek out every cm of vertical cargo space.

I ordered mine in July, due to be delivered somewhere around Xmas. Went all-in as well.. AWD, big battery, full trim (except the 1k$ for the massage seats), and a trailer hitch. Had to take it in white and have it foliated metallic blue, since Hyundai doesn't offer any bright colors anymore. I had cross-tested it against the BMW iX3, Ford Mustang MachE and Skoda Enyaq, and the Ioniq5 won by a league.. there's just no way to get that power and those features at that price anywhere else, and as an 80s kid, I love that retro pixelated design.

Managed to bag one out of the first batch. Same as the one in this road test. It'll replace the Wife's GLC250. Otherwise, looking forward to the EV experience.

All I got were clumsy marketing emails and a "calendar reminder" to login to Hyundai Australia's website on the 12th of October. I couldn't even display the website on that day. Thank you for testing the suspension, looks like they need local tuning. Hopefully the next shipment in 2022 has cars more suited to our roads.

Are you positive there's no HUD for Australia? It can't be a climate issue, as Spain can easily get as hot as Australia, and HUD is available there. Is the full suite of Highway Driver Assist available in Australia. The HUD is very much married to HDA package and that could potentially be the reason. Is Project 45, the first edition release on the I.5 available in Australia? They released it in the U.K. which is also RHD. I also don't understand why they are not releasing the solar roof in an country that enjoys so much sun. I'm an owner, and yes the roof isn't going to provide that much extra range, but it will allow you to keep the car cooler on a hot day, and will make sure that your car will operate after an extended period of in-operation......say you've left the car in a long term car park at the airport while you're on vacation. In a small market like Australia, with little direct competition, I can only surmise that if they are not releasing the Project 45 first edition with all the bells and whistles, then Hyundai are withholding these features for later release to maintain interest when there will be significant competition in the mid-price EV space.
