Recently got an I5 RWD limited and I agree with many of your points and appreciate the comparative notion of how it stacks up with an ICE vehicle. Also getting some education about the build and internals was very informative. I thought you injected a bit too many subjective preferences into your assessment about what the consumer wants. As a consumer, I appreciate not having this car look like any old ICE car on the road. I dig this design quite a bit, and I think buyers of new electric vehicles more often than not appreciate these funky designs. I don’t thing the car is “blocky” either. Eye of the beholder I guess. There were quite a few subjective comments that seemed to come off as representing the consumer wants but as we know, most of that is going to be personal preference.

Taking my Audi Etron in for 40,000 mile service, asked what they will do. They will check underneath, suspension, brakes etc… only thing to be done is drain the motors coolant overflow cups. That’s it! Still have the same range after 2.5 years of ownership, no problems. It is the most comfortable, fastest, most enjoyable car I have ever owned. Take a few trips every year, I use EA chargers along the way. Sometimes the chargers won’t work properly, have to try another one next to it. Usually they are in Target or Walmart parking lots. I plug in swipe my EAApp go in store use restroom look around a bit. Takes about 20 minutes average to charge. You don’t have to charge to 100 every time, just to get you to the next chargers. I stop about every 2 to 3 hours to charge and stretch my legs. If I needed longer range a would have bought a hybrid. I charge overnight at home, you can’t do that with a gas car! I will never go back to ICE.
The 4 dots on the steering wheel is an h according to the international morse code :) Great comprehensive review!
Just found this channel and subscribed immediately! So refreshing to get a review that is "real world", taking into account how the average person uses their car. I get kind of tired of the review channels by "car enthusiasts' who constantly complain that the reviewed car needs more power, or is a hslf second slower to 60 than another, or doesn't handle like a Ferrari. Thank you, AMD!
I own this car in AWD Limited trim. I love this car and consider the best in the catogery. I do agree with the exterior design in personal taste, and not everyone will like it, but that is true for all other cars also. The car was designed for smaller Digital rear view mirrors, but they are not allowed in US. As such, they had to design the giant rear view mirrors. the 4 dots on steering Wheel stands for 'H' in morse code. the car is super quiet on the highway and much quieter than some of the higher luxury cars, not to mention the ride quality. One snag is the rear view wiper, but that is not the end of the world. I have traveled long distances and the range anxiety is thing of the past. that is true for all electric vehicles though. There are some quirks like positioning of Qi wireless charger, no wireless Andrid Auto, but those are not deal breaker in grand scheme of the car. The cr has plenty of power and lets you adjust as per your needs, more then other electric cars. The regenerative braking also has more levels to suite your driving habits and needs more than the competition. Overall, I feel it is a better car than the competition. Things will change and should change with the influx of new electric vehicles.

I've had mine about a year now, and it's a great car. There's some things I still miss about my old Volvo, especially the build quality (my Ioniq-5 seats get a bit squeaky in the summer, and there's no massager :P) but other than that it's hard to fault it. It's super quiet, spacious, practical and goes like the wind when you need it to.

You are embracing the future, kind of! Hats off to you for checking it out. I hope you learn how to work on these, we need good mechanics like you to tackle the complicated systems.
If you plan on doing more EV reviews, you might want to install a level 2 charger at the shop
Fantastic review on the Ioniq 5! I actually bought a 2023 SEL AWD a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love mine! What you call quirky looks and all the reasons you don't like the looks are all the reasons I love it! I think it is soooo cool looking! I am still getting used to "planning" around the car charging experience but I'm getting better at it. Turns out that planning might be a good thing! I now have a level two EVSE at my house that I schedule to charge from 1 AM to 6 AM when our electricity is discounted to 5.6 cents per KW hour (Duke Energy in North Carolina) which equates to a dollar or two. The fast charging systems are too few right now but hopefully in the next two years this will get much better. Thanks!!!!
Good to have such this kind of channel to analyse things like this especially in technical and mechanical sides. Thanks
I have a EV6 and I love it thanks for the in depth dig and examination- it works great for my lifestyle cuz I keep it topped off day by day and 5k miles in and it's great ! I had to do a lot of research before buying an electric car. I charge on my 110v at home and I get 10% overnight

I don't necessarily agree with you on the general design and usability points of the overall car but you make a great general point about whether or not EVs are a good fit for everyone. I learned this the hard way by purchasing one. 80% of the time it's a great vehicle when driving around town and staying within the county, especially with a level 2 charger at home that we can charge overnight. But for road trips it becomes a huge hassle and like you said I've contemplated renting a car several times just to go from Seattle to Portland and back because 250 miles of range under optimal conditions around town turns into 170 miles of range driving 75mph in cold temps. And then when you go to charge the stations are often full and half of the terminals are broken. Then charging takes over an hour because you don't always get the fastest speeds. And imagine doing this with two crying babies in the backseat. So I think an EV would be a great addition to a multi-car household. If you have an EV for most of your driving and then a 2nd car for roadtrips then life could be good.

On my busiest days where I'm driving all over, I might use 30% (summer) or 50% (winter). I took a road trip last winter and also did not have to plan my life around the car. The chargers were all along the route and sure they took about 20 minutes every 3 hours but I needed to stretch my legs and eat usually by then anyway. Hope this helps.

Thank you for this VERY informative video! We live near St. Louis, MO and bought our Hyundai Ioniq Blue, Hybrid new, with 12 miles on it in 2019. She's beautiful! She's a sparkly cross between Green and Grey; and her color changes with the light. We've named her Sparkles. If I'm good and keep my foot "out of it", we can get over 60 miles per gallon of gas. I've gotten 64 without being careful. He's right, we get the best mileage when we go below 70, but I look down periodically and I'm going faster on the highway. She's got fantastic pickup! We drive mostly suburban and highway; although we also go into the city occasionally. It has a lot of room inside, which we fill frequently driving things for my small company around and getting supplies. It looks really good on the outside, too. Our major complaints about it are that it can, at times, be a bit sluggish off the line, and sometimes the change from the electric motor to the gas engine is discernible. Also, my spouse doesn't like that it doesn't have a CD player, which I don't like either. It sits low to the ground and has a sporty sort of distinguished look; which I like since we are in our middle 60's. It's comfortable for our gently growing older bodies. The dealership we bought this car from very recently called and wanted to buy it back and work out something for us to buy any other car on the lot. We refused. I would not want another all gas car. My spouse says the next vehicle he wants to buy is the all electric ford pickup that's supposed to be out in the next 5 years. We understand that it will start at about $40,000. He wanted to put our names on the waiting list about 6 months ago, but it was full before he could. I wouldn't part with this car and it now has a few miles on it.
I test drove this vehicle when it dropped. I absolutely loved it .
Great job keep up the good work i enjoy ur videos alot
Hyundai/Kia's adjustable brake regeneration on the paddle-shifters is VERY underrated. If you switch between coasting and heavy regen rapidly while on your trip, you'll extend your mileage to 5.5 mi / 1kW, or slightly more. Only the upcoming Cadillac EV has a similar feature. Not sure what was the problem with charging this car at home. You should get 4-5 miles of range added every hour it's plugged in. I charge my own EV while asleep at home. I never ever wait inside the car while it's charging, not even on road trips (I time my food and bathroom breaks to the car charging times).

Absolutely LOVE the way this thing looks. I saw one up close yesterday, coolest new car I've seen in so long. I don't trust Hyundai's reliability, seems hit or miss, but oh man, they knocked it outta the park with styling this one. I agree, brave and not for everyone. Edit to ad: by hit or miss I mean to shed light on my family's personal experience with Hyundai. Brother got a used Hyundai Elantra (I think) for cheap, fairly beat on. He drove that car for years, nearly a decade, never had ANY big problem, eventually gifted the car to a friend of his kid. That car STILL RUNS TODAY. Amazing, quite like a good Toyota. So, after such a positive experience with the beater Hyundai, my brother's wife bought a brand new Kia soul with a stick shift. That car has had so many problems and burned oil from day one, burned a lot of oil the car so bad that my brother has sworn off Hyundai and will never ever buy one again. Oh yeah, and the meta data. The meta data shows that my brother's Experience is not rare the brand is very hit and miss, some of their cars last surprisingly long time and some of the cars need many many many engines yes on warranty but that's still a hassle yes on warranty but that still makes them unreliable yes on warranty but no, no thank you.

Excellent presentation. Thanks
Great video applying your expertise, thank you. The only aspect I would recommend highlighting in the future videos for hybrids and electric cars is the interior outlets (110V, 12V, etc). Ideally, for the 110V, what wattage it could handle.
You need to select 12 amps on the Level 1 charger that comes with the car. It defaults to ~7 amps to not overwhelm an old house circuit breaker. Takes a few seconds and stays that way if you don't unplug it.

I have a 2021 Ioniq5, European model premium level(mid range). There are some disadvantages of the car( headlight is poor, no wiper at rear window etc.), but my major issue came out just recently traveling 2x650 km in winter (Budapest-Munich). You mention in your excellent (as always) video the complicated cooling system, but the real issue is the lack of battery heating! I was not able to use the very fast charging due to low battery temperature, which was between 5 to 10 deg, Celsius during whole travel. Therefor avarege charging speed was 53 kWh/hour (nominal is 170 kWh/h, 58 kWh battery). Now my questions: do you think Hyundai does "forgot" to build in battery heating, or they just did not activated software-wise. In 2021 battery heating was optional item, costing 300USD, and in my car this option was not selected by the Hyundai dealer. Br. Nandor

Not sure about Europe, but in the US there is a software update (need to get from the dealer) that enables battery preconditioning. It does not work as seamlessly as Tesla though. There are videos on KZread that shows you how to get it working.
Good review as usual. Range anxiety is no different now than it was in the 70's. It requires better planning. Back in those days you had a big car with a huge tank but poor mpg. On top of the car issues there were very few gas stations and long distance travel required planning and filling up at gas stations when available because stations were not located on every exit like today. I agree that a car is a tool and your life shouldn't be planned around its charging. However, people could take a lesson about planning many other aspects about the vehicle they purchase.

The review in general isn't bad but his take on electric car buying is complete FUD. "Usually people buy it because it's cool then find out about the issues" errrr nope, nobody is doing that. Nor is anyone expecting to be able to plug it in to a 110v socket for an hour then drive cross country. No EV owner is ever charging their car at home from a 110v wall socket anyway. It's fairly obvious he really doesn't like electric cars, but he should try to keep it objective and not make these kind of baseless claims. He's absolutely correct that they're not for everyone, but they're fine for the majority. 95% of journeys in the US are under 30 miles. Overnight charging on a level 2 charger is enough 99% of the time, with rapid chargers filling in on those rare occasions you're driving beyond the battery range.

@@lonzie errr, yup. Tesla totally exists on cool factor. That’s why they’re at their apogee right now.

I make an MX-30 EV work, almost anyone can make an Ionic 5 work for them.
I really enjoy your channel … you are fun and informative for sure… I think you need to get an EV and learn about all the conveniences they provide. Sure, range anxiety is real and there are trade offs . If you need road trip capability then a hybrid or Tesla with their superior charge network is a good choice. I have a huge amount of respect for Hyundai for their bold styling and execution… nothing else on the market currently comes close. The future is exciting

Absolutely agree! Very well said Dawg.
Your reviews are the best.
Real honest review. So many youtubers never say anything negative for fear of not getting future press cars.
I am anxiously awaiting your next EV review. Thank you
Thank you! How does the heating and cooling system compare to Tesla’s?
You don't have to like it, I think it's a great looking car. A work of art. I would never describe a car like that as blocky.
EV charging time is a problem for when you take long road trips, but I'm already waiting behind 5 cars at Costco to get cheap gas for my Prius. I wish there was a service that would come by every night while I sleep and fill up my tank, and only charge me $1.80 per gallon. I only have 90K miles on my 2011 Prius, so (following your excellent care recommendations) I hope to keep it a long time.
Nice video. EV is all about usage pattern and planning. Best served as a second car for daily routine use. Seeing a back country road but will you be in that mood while driving an EV? you'd probably leave it. In an ICE car, you'd probably go for it.
I always enjoy your videos. The only thing is when you get to the part. Where are you talk about the exterior and what you think a car looks like. This is totally subjective, so maybe tame that down a little? Otherwise lots of fun to watch!
The ICE legacy clearly shows in the drive train and body design. In contrast the interior yells ELECTRIC. Just like the Tesla's, plenty of space where the "shifter" is. Great review!
I trust this man’s automotive opinions. Waiting for his tech review of 2023 Prius.
great video, but.... Have you seen the complexity of the cooling system on tesla Y? 😃
4 dots stand for H in Morse code FYI, very cool design detail
Great and informational video, thanks! I would be interested to know how the Toyota bZ4X compares to this car in terms of complexity and reliability. I hope you get the chance to cover that vehicle. Additionally, I would be interested to hear your opinion about the reliability of electric cars compared to the reliability of plug-in hybrids.

BZ4x is not all Toyota. It's more BYD than Toyota This was joined venture with Chinese automaker BYD Mostly BYD engneering and BYD battries. Only 1220 BZ4x was sold in US in the entire year of 2022 Toyota doesn't belived that EVs are the future. Akio Toyota and Koji Sato think EVs are just a trend.
I like the channel from a mechanic view I've watched you in the past on a pruis but you changed your channel for better
A masterpiece vintage beauty peace of good engineering. They should keep with this design and just update some systems and hardware.
I love this car it will be my next buy. Like any car on offer it’s not for everyone.
Really I liked this car it looks like a car from future!
The 4 dots on the steering wheel stand for “H” in Morse code. I have the 2023 ioniq 5 SEL and i Love it. Not sure if I missed it being mentioned in the video (as it’s definitely not in the title or description) but I’ve found a lot of people are not noting which trim they are reviewing. This is the Limited in the video
Delorean doors would have been the icing on the cake. 😃
I think it looks very cool. Great review as always .
@The Car Care Nut Remix. I noticed you did not include a Tesla Model Y to review and your opinion since they are in the same crossbody type car?
Thanks AMD, very interesting. I wouldn't want drive this over a rock or debris to damage or open up the battery. This would be a lease then get rid of job. Some deep water downstream. I'll get mine after your get yours.
Everyone in America should watch this! Especially the Greenies!
AMD thank you for the honest review. At this point in my life, I will stick with an ICE car mine is a 2019 and with 7K miles and gets reasonable gas milage 30+ in everyday driving. Thank you as always.
Thanks!
This reminds me of myself being dragged by life to keep up with technology, begrudgingly, some good points but definitely get the sense he does not like any of it lol entertaining for sure.
I test drove a couple of different EVs available in the market and I have to say Ioniq 5's door handle was the best. I still can't get used to Tesla's handle. Worst door handle out of the bunch was VW's ID.4's.
This is a retro look and I like it.
I know it's subjective, but I think it looks great.
Mind blown with the double condenser talk! I need a translator!
We have a charger at work and at home. I drive a Hybrid (Mazda CX-60) but we're looking to get an electric car as number two. Plus we have over 4200 public chargers in the country (16.584 mi²) half of which are 30-60minute chargers and 4% less than 30 minute so charging whereever you go isn't a problem. I'm sure the US will follow up soon enough as the EV technology changes. BTW - please make a review of the CX-60 - it's the first car I just can't get enough of driving - it's so nice.
Tremendously competent review! Please test more EVs! Preferably German EVs.
I am a long time subscriber and when it comes to Toyota I consider you to be one of the best authorities. When it comes to EVs not so much. First to charging, if you are going to own an EV (regardless of brand) you are going to want a higher power outlet in your home that can fully utilize the vehicle's on-board charger. For most normal use cases, you can plug in at the end of the day and have the vehicles fully (or 80%) charged overnight. This means no trips to a DC Fast Charger except for road trips. And there is no getting into your vehicle in the morning and realizing you need to buy gasoline. Your home charging experience was with the so called "granny" charger. When you visit a location without suitable charging capabilities (Granny's house) you can still charge using a standard 120V outlet, albeit slowly. With a 20 amp 120 volt outlet, the maximum charging rate will be approximately 120 X 20 X 80% = 1920 watts. So it could take up to 40 hours to charge on this outlet with this Ionic 5 as it has a 77.4 KwH useable battery capacity. . The controls and screens situation is in flux right now with EVs as no standards have emerged just yet. IMO, the VW ID4 seems most familiar to folks used to conventional control setups. I think we will soon enter an age where the controls setup on any vehicle you drive with be associated with your "profile" and the need to fiddle with most controls will disappear almost completely.
You are a legend!
I love the Ioniq 5 desing is the only electric that I really like. But I'm waiting to buy one, because here in PR are too expensive some times 10k to15k over the msrp
Love this car! Perfect for your second vehicle.
My first visit to your new channel. Ev's are just a bridge until we get to fuel cells. Chevy bolt makes more sense and less complicated.
