Why social-emotional intelligence matters in school | Kate Karafotas | TEDxYouth@ISPrague

Growing up in a traditional education system, like many of her peers Kate believed that one's intelligence quotient (IQ) was the sole indicator of success. However, by observing her older brother’s challenges and growth, she has come to realize the importance of social and emotional skill development. In this talk, Kate encourages us to reflect on the concept of intelligence more broadly.
Kate Karafotas has American and German heritage, and has lived in many different countries, including the UK, Italy and the Czech Republic. Kate’s TEDx talk was inspired by her brother and her study of psychology.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

“The actual answer is…” you cannot accurately identify emotions through facial expressions. You could only pick up on normalized patterns. For example, a smile might indicate “happy“ but it could also be “uncomfortable“ or “mischievous” - all of this is specific to the individual and to the context. AWARENESS is essential concept, along with so many great ideas in this talk. But directing people toward a “correct“ answer when it comes to emotion recognition is a faulty concept that can lead to a lot of frustration and dead ends.

When people homeschool their children, they lose out on emotional intelligence learning. Children need to go to school. Not just because they’re learning what they need to for the world, but to learn social intelligence. When people become lone wolves, that’s dangerous
